I can't believe at 3:05 in the vid, this guy put his hands in the dirt near the tip of the bar. Not for me boss, I still have all ten. Should put a disclaimer, "don't try this at your house"
I have done this and dulled but not ruined several chains. (okay, probably ruined a couple.) Thanks for the video, reminded me of why I am buying a stump grinder.
The stump isn't removed, it's just shorter. I can't believe you were sitting there digging around in the grass with your hands, inches from a running chain saw.
Tree stump removal night for me, can tell I'm bored, my weed wacker would have taken the stump down quicker then that........ "chain saw". now you just have a short stump, a blue saw bar and a junk chain, good work if that was your intentions, must go, more stumps to see, so far, stumps 4, people 0
I agree the stump is not removed.. But I am sure it is low enough to cover dirt and grow grass over it. i pulled a stump last fall, I used an axe and shovel though. Which brings me to my 2 suggestions, take them or leave them. Dig around the stump with a shovel removing at least 12'' of the soil, it will be easier, I assure you. 2, cut the stump vertically with an X, once you have your first quarter out, you can use the tip, to go straight in. And who cares about a chain, it can be sharpened.
Glad you saved stump for last. Chain was toast by the time you were half thru. I've found cutting with top of the bar gives better control: Since you are almost cutting blind on the far side of the stump if you are near ground level, & dragging even a LITTLE dirt into the cut, by accident, from far side dulls your chain, if you cut w/ top of bar & keep watching your side of stump to stay above dirt level, even if tip of bar enters dirt on FAR side, dirt's blown FROM cut, & not dragged into cut.
you understand how a chainsaw works right? no need to make sawing motions with it, the engine does that for you believe it or not. Hold that baby still let the engine do the work for you and for the love of god sharpen your chain!
For anyone watching, please don't do this. When you get the saw that close to the ground, it does not pull proper cooling air across the engine and overheats the motor. In addition, close proximity to the dirt dulls the chain in a heartbeat, making the saw work even harder and run even hotter (which was plainly obvious here). This is good way to ruin a saw motor. You can always resharpen a chain, but it's a bigger deal to ruin the whole saw.
Is this a joke.?...I just spent all this time watching what my A H husband did this a.m. THIS IS NOT A STUMP REMOVAL IDIOTS!!!!!! it's cutting a tree down. Where was this taken?????? Morons
You aint removed the stump, you just shortened it, along with the life of your chainsaw, get a spade, dig round it and cut the roots with a bowsaw or axe.
Should have dug out the area around the stump so you could cut below ground level. Like someone else said, do a little at a time instead of all in one shot. I have 6 Oak stumps in my yard. Not one of them under 15" in diameter. I'm going with a grinder.
by the time he ruined the chain in the dirt he prob could have done it faster with a butter knife :) anddddd extremely dumb risking pinching the bar with the weight of the stump anddddd why didn't he cut down the middle and remove one half at a time???? ok i'm done lol
I think it will be a little easier if he slice the stump from the top down then cut the rest of the stump. It probably will be a less strain to the chain IMO.
Without all the obscene words, really should have chaps on while sawing. That bar can catch and the saw come back over the knee cap very fast. That takes some considerable surgery to patch the ligaments that get cut (good friend had just that happen while sawing a stump low). And as said, not a great way to treat a chain.
Well whoop di damn doo, he ruined the chain, who cares. I can buy a new chain for my chainsaw for $50 and it costs me $100 to have someone grind a stump.
@thebigdawg61 Cutting it at an inch, drilling holes and filling it full of jam (jelly) and letting ants eat it would have cost $2 for the jelly and $3 for the ant killer when they'd eaten it down. Even cheaper.
im just throwing this out there but ok you made the stump shorter, harder to wrap a chain on to actually get it out. cuz when they want a tree planted there next year i feel sorry for the landscaper cuz i am one and how peoples stupidity makes life so hard.....
@bone2thebone HA, that's not me, you stupid fucking hilljack, that is a neighbor of mine. Go back yoour shanty in the woods and go get your already inbread sister and your filthy whore mother pregnant
First step: cut tree , second step : let the stump dry, step 3: drill a hole ( 1'' to 2 '') as deep as you can, step 4: gather some friends and finally step 5: fill the hole with gas and you have a nice fire pit ( one time use only ) ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
@z4rt4n~ ye bud.... take these peoples advice. This is how u wreck your chainsaw. Like that guy said.... u might aswell throw that chain in the bin after doing something like this.
I thumbed this video up. I am the last person in the world to do any physical outdoor work, but I finally forced myself to start clearing the small (about 200 square feet) of dirt around my house left to me by my deceased parents. 3 days ago I started digging up the small trees, bushes, and roots to make room for growing my own food in a post-fossil-fuel self-sufficient world.
My body is aching. There is simply no clever "elegant" way to do this hard work.
@mphello "Mistakes" will ALWAYS be made. So, ignore the assholes who disparage your video.
Great job, and thank you for posting! I have no power tools. I'm just hacking away with an axe, saw, and shovel.
One thing that is always, always, ALWAYS true - whenever people get together to do some labor-intensive physical work, everybody is suddenly instantly an "expert" on how "best" to move said piece of furniture or uproot a stump. I have experienced this EVERY time I have been involved...
@mphello ... in helping move some big piece of furniture, whether I'm helping a friend or within our family or where-ever. And EVERY single time, at least one person (in my family's case, that would be my brother) becomes an absolute asshole-jerk about it, suddenly designating themselves "the expert" on said hard manual labor.
You're quite smooth with that chainsaw. I'm sure I'd lose control of it and it would end up in the neighbor's swimming pool.
I have to agree it is out and in a total emergency [ not sure that can be applied to stump removal] - the idea works. However - I notice you STILL have to remove the stump to use a rider on it cause it would kill your blades if you ever even touched it.
HOWEVER -- the dang thing worked - hahahaa. the price of a new chain is way cheaper than stump removal. I give you a 7 out of 10.
It takes seconds, literally, to ruin a chain by running it in the dirt. Seconds. This chain probably could not even be sharpened after this abuse. Sidenote: what exactly is the purpose of shaking the saw?
Dig a hole to put your engine in below ground level. Dont let chain bar extend past the stump to the other side where it gets into dirt so it doesnt dull. Then fill in hole with shovel.
why so much rage people? Its not your chainsaw or stump. Never seen so much hate over such a stupid thing. The chain is probably dull because he's working and the rest of you are sitting at home eating shit
One dead chain! This can be done but you need to dig further down around the stump and hose away any dirt and crap first. It's much easier hiring a stump grinder.
you cut it flush but its not removed! Good effort though! You can rent a smaller stump grinder for fairly cheap if you ever want to plant grass there!
Hell a rubber spoon would have taken less time... I was wanting to know what a JTN is but I figured it out.. It is his name Justin Turd Nocker Smart as a Fart
I did not read all the comments but when you cut a stump or tree you have to keep the chainsaw blade out of the grass and dirt. Dirt will dull a new saw blade in seconds.
Oh well, it was just an Echo..................yikes.....I just watched it again and it scared me worse. Next time try moving the saw back and forth a little faster like a hand saw only this time put the chain brake on while doing it.
Not to tweak a man choice how to remove a stump. When you start pulling dirt into the sprocket housing it dulls the chain but it also clogs up the bar oil drip holes. This will cause the chain to heat up, then the normal stress will cause the chain to warp and become very dull. If the chain were to kick off just right it can make for a godly nasty wound. Try doing plunge cuts (like a waffle shape) then hit with a sledge hammer. Much easier and safer
That was hilarious. Should be how to fuck up a saw, dull a chain, look like a retard, jerk off a powertool and not remove a stump. Love the guy filming it making the enthusiastic comments as if he were shooting a porn. "This is great footage..right?" "She's gonna cum now..."
the problem is, you should never cut with the chainsaw under the ground lvl :( if it's found some stones one time it will gone wrong:( trust me dude its better way to dig out ;) yes slower a bit, but more trusty
I can't believe at 3:05 in the vid, this guy put his hands in the dirt near the tip of the bar. Not for me boss, I still have all ten. Should put a disclaimer, "don't try this at your house"

I did not read all the comments but when you cut a stump or tree you have to keep the chainsaw blade out of the grass and dirt. Dirt will dull a new saw blade in seconds.
Good luck with the next one.

regorkralcekrub 1 year ago
that's not removing it though, you just make it flush with the grass, it's still there.

This is a horrible way to do this. This does not help anyone!
jmenpk16 1 year ago
Mate it hurts to watch you do that.
When I cut that low I use a worn chainsaw and chain.
And I dig the surrounding soil away first, clean the trunk up and cut slightly below the ground,so the grass can grow over.
Are you willing to swap that saw for mine because I feel sorry for it(like rallying a new car throught the scrub)
Nice effort though, to show us all the mistakes.
Are your arms tired from the sawing action lol
farmerjimz 1 year ago
the problem is, you should never cut with the chainsaw under the ground lvl :( if it's found some stones one time it will gone wrong:( trust me dude its better way to dig out ;) yes slower a bit, but more trusty

I dont know how to break this to you, but you didn't remove any stump. At least your technique made me laugh.
