I've never seen an anime that is ruined this badly with the english dub.

Well anime is usually significantly worse when it's dubbed just because the original usually has proper Japanese actors who understand the material and can actually act, where as the majority of english dubbing seems to be done by people they've rounded up from the local amateur dramatics society

But that's only half the issue with Azumanga. Not only are the actors much worse but loads of the jokes are completely lost in translation because they are Japanese word play gags

For example when they fly to Okinawa theres a joke where Tomo finds a packet of cookies and then starts following Yomi down the street shouting the name of it which in the english dub makes Tomo look like some kind of bizarre simpleton who just shouts out the last thing shes read

What the actual joke is supposed to be is that she isnt shouting the name of the cookie at all.She is deliberately mispronouncing it so that it sounds like the Japanese word for penis just to embarrass Yomi in public

Loads of stuff like that throughout the whole series. For example there are a bunch of jokes made about Yukari's English that obviously don't work, her English is terrible but none of the others understand it enough to pick her up on it.

Also, none of the kanji (the japanese writing) is translated in the english dub which makes some of it hard to follow. For example there are dozens of scenes that are introduced by showing say the sign outside a door to tell you where they are.

There is much subtler stuff as well that's harder to quantify. Like in the Japanese version Sakaki has a very soft, quiet voice that makes so much more sense for the way the character is written than the broad confident american voice that she has in the english dub. And Chiyo actually sounds like a little girl as opposed to some shit unemployed 40 year old doing an impression of a 10 year old.

But yeah, watch it for yourself,its much beter.There's a good quality english sub on KickAssAnime

@ringosis I've started watching the english sub version. It does sound better. I also noticed it isn't as dummed down. Like, on the first one, she doesn't say "SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT" in the english dub.

Sounds like you've found some bad amateur subtitling there. I'd really recommend you get the one from Kickassanime.

I assume you mean the bit when shes kicking her bike?She is saying "kuso" which technically translates as shit but it's not a very suitable translation as kuso isn't as offensive as shit is in English. It wouldn't be bleeped on daytime TV for example.

In the version I'm talking about it's translated as "damn" which, while not a direct translation is much more in keeping in tone

Just google KickAssAnime...it's the first thing that comes up. They do really high quality subtitles for popular anime's. When I say high quality I mean they go so far as doing subtitles within the actual show.

For example when something is written on the board in chalk in Kanji, they've added an english translation that looks like it's written in chalk next to it. They also explain stuff in captions like what Chiyo is actually trying to say when she says basugasubasubasu

@ringosis No, the regular Japanese voice actors are said to perform just average quality voice acting in Japanese and whatnot. I've read this in sources and in other people's posts so it is credible. Plus, I myself think that the voice acting in Japanese does sound a little meh on its own too.
