  • His Left hand was not deep enough. It might choke a begginer but not someone thats been doin Jiu-Jitsu for a good amount of time. The deeper both hand the more effective the choke would be.

  • Only one arm is choking. Chokes can be effective with only cutting off one side. It would be different however if both sides weren't deep enough.

  • It works in stand up just fine but in this particular position against a good guy, you have to lock the guard, reach deep into the gi palm up, shrimp to the side to open up the other side, reach the other hand in palm up on the other side, lift yourself up to his level, then close guard as you come down with him pulling his gi apart.
