hey thanks man, this fix did the trick on my eeepc 900. i just installed Lubuntu 11.04 and i got audio popping after installing skype. the last line wasnt on the document, but i added it with the # and it worked! but then it came back after i started skype again, but went away when i shut it down. so whatever its all good
I do like Ubuntu a lot. 10.10 was just right for me. Then with 11 they bring out this rubbish Unity interface and plenty of bugs. Apart from the popping sound, it also logs out randomly.
@shmalignant i just did...just says try to save nevertheless, and tells me it cant because it maybe read only or not enough disk space...which i know i have enough diskspace. i dont even have audio, help?
@xxch0c0b3anxx After you tried this you lost your sound, or you didn't have audio to begin with? If you had audio and this tutorial messed it up, then just go back and change everything the way it was (see 1:30 of vid). Otherwise, if you never had audio you may want to check out Ubuntu forums to troubleshoot your problem. :0)
@shmalignant i didnt have sound to begin with...and i will try checking the forums..im new to linux...so you can imagine how long it took me to figure how to download adobe flashplayer for this. i barely figured out im using karmic koala lol i will check troubleshoot though. thank you
If you only have "choppy sound" with movie player and not other applications than probably not. The problem may be with your audio codecs or something else.
Nice one, thanks! Would you be kind enough to let me know how you created such a cool compiz setup as well please? i have the u magnet thing but yours looks really cool!
Very nice fix. I installed UKK a while back when it was in beta and noticed that my sound was giving me serious problems and I decided to downgrade back to 9.04. This has fixed that issue for me and I am back to using it. Thank you very much.
Really nice job, great for novice users like me to get the job done fast. Fix worked perfectly btw on a dv9000 laptop, and all the quick buttons still function normally.
Question - I've used a redhat cluster for a couple years, but I'm new to ubuntu. I kinda understand the purpose of using sudo, but why won't it simply let me edit the file directly - such as 'vi /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf ' ? I have rw perm...what gives?
@Torgoable As with all operating systems, there's many different ways to achieve a single task. A few people have posted comments here describing their methods. I'm a novice too, so my knowledge is limited. However, I have found that with the linux community nowadays most information you need is just a few searches away. Open source FTW!
Thanks! It seems that sudo is indeed required to make any system-administrative changes from the terminal, which is a bit weird to me as I'm the only user of the system, but all the years of using a windows on my personal PCs have made me ignorant of ubuntu's ability to ADAPT TO DO WHAT YOU WANT IT TO. It's freaking amazing...
Pardon my shock and awe :) I'll follow your suggestion and look for myself, long live the open source movement! *fanfare*
In the United States, the symbol is usually called the pound sign (also called the number sign). Often times different regions that speak the same language will use different terms for different symbols. In the UK, they would never call it the pound sign as £, the symbol for currency is the pound sign.
@Failedattempts1 no clue... that line of code is supposed to just deal with a power save feature, not your master volume. Right click your volume control on your panel and open up sound preferences. Make sure nothing's muted.
i've got a question, I've had the problem somewhat fixed for awhile using the same basic method (instead of commenting out the line I changed the power_save value to 0) but I still get pops whenever I turn the system on. Would commenting out the line fix this?
you the man! thanks for such a fast response. I just started using Linux again yesterday, I was a big fan of 8.10 but had to move back to windows while I was at college but now i have 2 computers, one for linux one for windows.
THNX! Really simple and easy to fix (it's all about knowing WHERE to look!)
FYI: I am running Xubuntu...the ONLY difference in this process is that users need to type "gksudo thunar" (XFCE filemanager) instead of Nautilus, from either the Terminal or the Run dialog (Alt+F2).
@zhlim89 to the best of my knowledge, this only works with Intel HDA sound cards. To see what sound card you have, open up a terminal and type lspci (the first leter is an "L").

Thanks for the video. Unfortunately, that line is not in 11.04's version of the file.
10.10 was working great then I upgraded and it started doing that. Don't suppose you know the solution in 11.04 do you? :)

@capricious71
I'm in the same situation. (Meaning how the line isn't in 11.04 :[ )

@capricious71 Same here...
I hate this update. I'd switch to Arch but I'm too lazy.

This has been flagged as spam show
To fix it on Fedora, you run
echo "options snd_hda_intel power_save=0" > /etc/modprobe.d/snd_hda_intel.conf
with root access. :)

# is not a 'pound' sign. £ is a 'pound' sign !!
Much simpler to type 'sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf' in terminal.
