I am a Canadian and we do NOT humanly kill horses. There was a spy camera at the slaughter house in Montreal Canada and one horse got shot 11 times before it finally was killed. The poor thing kept falling and getting up and the guy kept bashing with his "humane gun". I want to stop this, I live in Alberta and that's where they get most of the horse meat. Dear God, what have we become in this country, worse than animals.

i got a free horse from a rancher whose well was drying up. an older bonebag white arabian gelding name magical something, something. nobody wanted him even for free! he's healthy and beautiful now, the best behaved horse you could ever want. funny too, flaps his lips when you talk to him like he's pretending to talk. a perfect babysitter that tip-toes with a little kid on him,but can dump an adult an' make it look like an accident! ha! ha!. he just turns real tight and you can fall.
I used to ride horses, I went to a camp a few years ago. They had a new horse, a grey gelding named J.D. During one of our breaks I decided to spend a few minutes with him. Well, after a few minutes I start walking away, and he starts neighing at me! I could resist, so I went back to him for another twenty minutes. He would stretch his muzzle through the stall so I could scratch him. He really was a sweet guy.

I literally cried when seeing this. I didn't know such things existed. People racing horses just to get some money off them. There can only be one winner in a horse race. Everyone that loses, is at jeopardy of losing big time. From growing up to being killed at a young age. My sister and I rescue thees horses from a track up north somewhere. Thy call us and say ,we have some horses if you don't come get them there going to slaughter. Some times we half to drop stuff and and go right up and get them. It brakes my heart when thy come, thy don't know how to be a real horse. All thy know is track and stall. We have been working with horses for 20 years. And getting the TB race horses for two now. Thy are part of our lives, our family. Damn the people who kill them!

At least the ones shipped to Canada are humanely dispatched by strictly enforced pain-free slaughter laws. Sadly, the ones that ARE shipped to Canada are not all humanely killed, they are actually barbarically slaughtered in conditions that are downright deplorable. 100,000 horses are slaughtered annually from the United States. This equals about 1% of the entire horse population of the United States, a number that rescues and other adoptions agencies could easily handle. Today, I saved a mare who was due to be sent off in the next few days. I have never felt so happy in my life knowing that I saved her life. It is hard to see how many people continue to breed horses thinking it's completely fine.

Why should we give a shit about animals being slaughtered to be eaten when we have 80,000 homeless people in Los Angeles alone. Help take care of your fellow man first before an animal that is killed not for fun, but to be eaten.

The moral, right, decent thing to do when the horse is ready to retire would be to: A) Find them a loving home or simply give them away to one of those amazing horse rescue refuges
B) Keep them yourself & look after them until they are old (as they looked after you financially)
C) If all that fails, then have them humanely euthanized!

Great video! It makes me sick that these horses are practically 'dumped' when they are not champions, become injured, or become too old to race. The lucky ones are adopted, re-homed, and live wonderful lives but far too many are being killed. Personally, I think it's the responsibility of the people who race these horses to care for the horses' entire lives.

Only human beings (certain ones anyway) could have the audacity to destroy something so beautiful. Ghandi stated it best. That a nation and its culture would be judged by how it treated its animals. Horse slaughter is an indictment of the individuals that permit it to happen and then defend what is an indefensible position. I work in a horse slaughter factory its good work and good pay there's nothing like working the bolt gun on a horses head until it's fully dead...I usually shoot its spine first to keep it from moving then i plug a few shots in it's head usually dies within 10 min...lots of suffering

The slaughter process is horrific. In the news today (NYTimes) some deadhead discovered his horse were dying at his farm, and several went to slaughter, and he said, "Duh" I was not aware tis was happening. Good person to hang up by his left heel.

i am so glad this is going on what people don't know is that horses are very dum animals. Horse slaughter is great for making money and putting food on the table. If a horse can die by euthanasia which puts chemicals in the corpse which renders it toxic waste... or it can die by humane slaughter whereby the corpse can be a part of the circle of life and feed zoo animals and dogs and some people that like it... But they are slaughtered for more than just human consumption in Europe and Japan. The meat is used in zoos in the US to feed the carnivores and no doubt it goes for dog food as well. The kill method does need to made more humane though. You would think the person handling the bolt gun would try to be more efficient at his job. The Amish do care about thier animals--very much, but they are practical. The idea is that if an animal must die, then let it serve a function in death rather than simply end its life. They don't take pleasure in butchering, but neither do they let meat go to waste.

If you must, put them down humanely or find homes for them. See the second chance video about race horses etc. It costs approx.60.00 to put the horse down humanely- but the "killer buyer" can sell them for a lot more to the slaughter house. The demand for some horses (see video) is high and they are usually able to find GOOD homes, with follow-up for them, not another cycle into a slaughter house.

Thankfully there are new programs being developed at race tracks so that SOME horses are saved. Mountaineer stubbornly remains one of the tracks not willing to have a program or allow volunteers on site to assist.

I am a Canadian and we do NOT humanly kill horses. There was a spy camera at the slaughter house in Montreal Canada and one horse got shot 11 times before it finally was killed. The poor thing kept falling and getting up and the guy kept bashing with his "humane gun". I want to stop this, I live in Alberta and that's where they get most of the horse meat. I used to ride horses, I went to a camp a few years ago. They had a new horse, a grey gelding named J.D. During one of our breaks I decided to spend a few minutes with him. Well, after a few minutes I start walking away, and he starts neighing at me! I could resist, so I went back to him for another twenty minutes. He would stretch his muzzle through the stall so I could scratch him. He really was a sweet guy.
How could anyone do this to subtle creatures like these?

My sister and I rescue thees horses from a track up north somewhere. Thy call us and say ,we have some horses if you don't come get them there going to slaughter. Some times we half to drop stuff and and go right up and get them. It brakes my heart when thy come, thy don't know how to be a real horse. All thy know is track and stall. We have been working with horses for 20 years. And getting the TB race horses for two now. Thy are part of our lives, our family. Damn the people who kill them!

As long as Americans persist in producing far more horses than can be housed, there will be horses shipped for slaughter. At least the ones shipped to Canada are humanely dispatched by strictly enforced pain-free slaughter laws. Canadians don't eat horse meat, so the majority end up on European dinner plates, and used in the pet food industry.

100,000 horses are slaughtered annually from the United States. This equals about 1% of the entire horse population of the United States, a number that rescues and other adoptions agencies could easily handle. There are 10,000,000 PET horses living in the U.S right now. 100,000 horses are murdered for their meat as an expensive "delicacy" to wealthy European & Japanese diners. 100,000 horses = 1% of our entire horse population. Today, I saved a mare who was due to be sent off in the next few days. I have never felt so happy in my life knowing that I saved her life. 1) No more horses should be allowed to be shipped out of the country for slaughter!
2) No horses should be allowed to be sold for the purposes of slaughter, PERIOD. Force the horse owner to pay for humane euthanasia or force them to find a loving home or horse refuge.
If you don't want to have to take humane responsibility for the horse that has given you part of your livelihood, then you need to get out of the business and get a real job!

Great video! It makes me sick that these horses are practically 'dumped' when they are not champions, become injured, or become too old to race. The lucky ones are adopted, re-homed, and live wonderful lives but far too many are being killed. Personally, I think it's the responsibility of the people who race these horses to care for the horses' entire lives.

Only human beings (certain ones anyway) could have the audacity to destroy something so beautiful. Ghandi stated it best. That a nation and its culture would be judged by how it treated its animals. Horse slaughter is an indictment of the individuals that permit it to happen and then defend what is an indefensible position. The problem could be curtailed by more responsible breeding and ownership. However, that solution seems too sophisticated for those who defend this horrible practice.

The slaughter process is horrific. In the news today (NYTimes) some deadhead discovered his horse were dying at his farm, and several went to slaughter, and he said, "Duh" I was not aware tis was happening. Good person to hang up by his left heel.

Well slaughter needs to come back, which people need to support the Illinois repeal. Instead of inhumane ways across the borders, create a humane way. Horses are livestock, just the same as cattle. Just because its not a delicacy to us in the United States, lets fix this economy since people now can't afford to take care of these horses and they are suffering to lack of funds because of the economy. @greatbigbubby the workers at a foreign plant in poland , i beleive, is the one where i saw the workers look so dejected when the horses first arrived after the long trip. like he was trapped in the job. he moved so slow like the way a person does when they lose someone, you know the trance-like state when you learn someone has passed. i felt bad for the guy AND the horses. Not to fear-God sees it all and will make right every evil , we just don't know when . do what we can and have faith.

i am so glad this is going on what people don't know is that horses are very dum animals. Horse slaughter is great for making money and putting food on the table. I would like to see more horses slaughtered. we need to stop the terrorist groups called peta and alf from stopping us i live in american and we still slaughter horse to this day at my farm it is great and i love to eat the meat. animals don't have rights and never will the are ours to see fit thank god for the american dream

I am a former racehorse trainer I would love to be a part of saving these horses. The abuse of these horses is one reason that I left racing. I bet they are starving, look up how many people have been arrested for not feeding their horses, b/c they can't afford to but don't want to send them to slaughter, now which is worse

If a horse can die by euthanasia which puts chemicals in the corpse which renders it toxic waste... or it can die by humane slaughter whereby the corpse can be a part of the circle of life and feed zoo animals and dogs and some people that like it... It's a death either way, I suggest make the most of it, and YES all captive animals deserve a humane, respectful death.

But they are slaughtered for more than just human consumption in Europe and Japan. The meat is used in zoos in the US to feed the carnivores and no doubt it goes for dog food as well. The kill method does need to made more humane though. You would think the person handling the bolt gun would try to be more efficient at his job. Think that method is mean, have you how Asians consume cats? Or the bull fighter that stabs a bull with 3 swords? There are people who torture and consume other people.

Or shall they starve with someone that can't take care of them. If someone's children are starving and they can't be take care of, they should be sold to elite groups of people like some Italians (who just happen to have sold their female family members into prostitution after WWII) as meat a delicacy? The Amish do care about thier animals--very much, but they are practical. The idea is that if an animal must die, then let it serve a function in death rather than simply end its life. They don't take pleasure in butchering, but neither do they let meat go to waste.

If you must, put them down humanely or find homes for them. See the second chance video about race horses etc. It costs approx.60.00 to put the horse down humanely- but the "killer buyer" can sell them for a lot more to the slaughter house. The demand for some horses (see video) is high and they are usually able to find GOOD homes, with follow-up for them, not another cycle into a slaughter house.

Thankfully there are new programs being developed at race tracks so that SOME horses are saved. Mountaineer stubbornly remains one of the tracks not willing to have a program or allow volunteers on site to assist.
