I love thses idiots who say Rice does not belong..from 1975 to 1986 12 years he was in the top 5 in the majors in HRS RBIs hits TBs tripiles slug% game winning rbis..yeah okay he does not belong..lol..name one other guy in his era that could hit for avg and power?? reggie jackson?? brett? yount?? moliter?? NO!!!!
I love at 3:08 that Dave is hinting that he had sex with Madonna. But if you were a celebrity or pro athlete from 1990 - 1995 you probably did have sex with Madonna.
Since when did Rice become so talkative. He was an anti-sox fan when he played. His glory days are past, so now he wants attention. Too late. maybe if were more likable as a player, (Yaz, Dom to name 2), more fans would be accepting. Rice reminds me of Kingman, Randy Johnson and the other surly players in all sports. Rice's time has come and gone. He is not missed, or even reminisced over. Don't try to make yourself memorable off the backs of others. Go home Jim, we never missed ya.
Jim Rice is so of himself. The fans disliked him, wanted him traded. He could not string 3 words together. Still cannot. For him to bad-mouth Jeter is despicable. Rice should NOT be in the hall of fame. A fool, dolt and nincompoop. A 1 trick pony.
Well, he is. What he did on the field, while not hitting 500 HR, still had the numbers to be HOF worthy. Other guys are in the HOF that people think shouldn't be in there (Addie Joss, Ralph Kiner, Bill Mazeroski) that are nevertheless in there.
Circa 1977. Against the Yankees. Fenway Park. Jim Rice crushed a ball to center. It rose.....and rose.....and rose until it easily cleared the wall and flagpole, out of Fenway completely. It's 420 out there in deep ctr where an occasional outfielder will chase a ball. Tom Yawkey (Sox owner) said it was the longest ball he ever saw hit in all his decades there. I've seen 500 foot home runs before and since. Rice's smash was mind boggling. Rising as it left Fenway. I swear.
Think your wrong 493 home runs. 1550 Rbi's 284 BA. I Ozzy Smith got in with 2490 hits then so should McGriff who powered the ball. Omar Vizqel has 100 less errors and more put outs and hits than Ozzy ever got. Omar just made it look easy. He will be overlooked but I hope not. Smartest player I think I ever saw.
Rickey underrated? Maybe it's just me but I thought everybody knew he was badass! What I liked about Rickey was he made baseball fun to watch. Long ball is great but seeing him do his thing on base was better.
@Icemangqx No, Rickey was definitely underrated when he was playing. The press used to ride his ass all the time. And he won just one MVP when he should have won three or four. Was robbed in 1981, absolutely robbed. Should have won in '85, and possibly '89 too. It's since he's retired and the dust has settled that a lot more people see the numbers and realize just how great he was. Plus all the legendary Rickey stories.
i liked numbers 2 and 3, jay leno said on a segment called what happened the next day, Ezra Sutton hits the first home run, the next day he sleeps with madonna
rickey is the best ever...#1 runs scored,# lead off home runs,#1 stolen base...i can go on,but he is #2 in walks when nobody wanted to walk him....bonds past rickey with charity walks...would anyone walk rickey on purpose so he could steal second...walk bonds and it's a double play waitin
let me see... the object of baseball is too score runs and rickey henderson has done that more then anyone in history...most walks, runs, stolen bases and don't forget the lead off home runs
@dkitty8124 Yup...he sure is an automatic double-play or not a stolen base threat...I mean he was only part of 500-500...well 700-500...club because he didn't steal any bases right?
@supu6 By the time Bonds was intentionally walked as much as he was, he no longer had the ability to steal basses like that any more. The last time Bonds stole more than 20 basses was like 98' he stole 13 the year he broke the HR record. The year he got 232 walks he stole 6 basses. Thanks for playing though.
@ogichida30 It really is hard to steal a lot of bases when someone is in front of you. He didnt IBB with the bases empty smarty pants. It is also hard to steal a lot of bases when you are busy hitting 73 home runs.
@supu6 Yes he did, in his youth he was a legitimate steal threat. No one here is denying that. However, when he was getting all those BB's they did it because he was NOT a steal threat. He was walked with the basses empty, with RISP, or about once a game. Not all of his walks were intentional, they pitched around him as a matter of practice. Even in his last season Rickey was on base 15 times and stole 3 basses. So yes at the end of his career Bonds was a DP and not a SB threat.
@supu6 No I didn't. I said he Bonds, did not, and COULD not steal basses at the end of his career. He was in fact a double play waiting to happen. Please learn to read.
@ogichida30 Please heed your own advice, and also learn to understand English words and also to spell them and to also maybe learn a thing or two about baseball.
@supu6 What the hell are you talking about you simple minded moron? Nowhere did I misspell, nor use incorrect grammar. I also did not use a run-on sentence. Furthermore my baseball knowledge is based on FACT, not emotional response to Barely Bonds being maligned for no longer being able to steal basses. The simple fact is he could not steal basses at the end of his career. You should go back to school and learn English. Even on on-line school might help you.
Congrats to both Rickey and Jim... Jim was my hero growing up and still is, because he continues to remind me of my love of the sport and keeping the faith!!! My kids now love this sport that my father, older brother, and Jim taught me to love!!!
Rickey is not only one of the greatest players of all time, but one of the most dominate players of all time. He controlled the game like no other. Walks, stolen bases, runs, leadoff hrs, gold glove, 3000 hits, hit for average, seasons played, even slugging percentage when he won the AL MVP and he was a World Champion. Rickey did it all. And he was clean, unlike Barry Bonds. Rickey is definitely up there with the greatest players of all time.
Who would have thought that Jim Rice would be better at comedic delivering off a cue card than Rickey Henderson? Well, I suppose because the cue cards would be cramping Rickey's style.
but where's Tommy John? 288 career wins, 3.34 ERA, 3 20+ win seasons, 46 shutouts, 4-time all star. He really should be in the Hall, and it's too bad he'll have to wait until the Veterans Committee puts him in.
yes yes yes, what the hell is wrong with those writers. jim rice is a hall of famer easily. and what the hell is wrong with people. How can you not make it in the hall and fame and the next year make it. Either you are a hall of famer or you are not. Why do you have to wait 5 years. There should be no first ballot. Hall of fame or you arent.
Unfortunately, it took the Steroids Era for these damn voters to get their heads out of their asses and start re-evaluating their own voting practices. All before you got comfortable in your seat.

Rickey was the ultimate leadoff hitter. He had some power, drew a ton of walks, he could hit for average, and was the ultimate base stealer.

@EeVvAaNn3 He had power and was robbed of a lot of home runs by his home parks; should have hit 30 homers three times in his career.
