Lol it is scenes like these that make our job really difficult. It is really rare to successfully resus somebody (I have had 2).
The difficulty is that when I go to a patient that is in asystole (flat line) relatives and bystanders often say 'use that thing they use on tv to bring them back to life' when in reality that just isn't the case!! There are only two arrhythmias that can be shocked and we hardly ever get anyone back, ever!
Also if any of you ever have to do bystander CPR, please do
It's the Miraculous Bitchslap of Life! Seriously definitely one of the most emotional medical scenes in film history, but since I got into the TV Tropes website, I can't help but laugh.
In the novelization, it suggests the aliens were behind her resurrection.
Oops. On another video, I made the mistake of saying that there was no music. There is a little in the beginning and end. But, for the most part, it's brilliant direction, acting and writing carrying this scene. I mean, look at Ed. His performance was so powerful in The Abyss, I wish now he had been nominated in 1989.
And the award goes to.............she looked really dead! Must have been that smackin around. that brought her back. Wonder what she thought when she looked in the mirror and saw how swollen her cheeks were. Great job Ed, hope you're around when I need CPR. Don't give up k?
To labour the point, and be - redundantly -specific, the line I quoted which he delivers runs a great risk of seeming trite and melodramatic but Harris makes it sound natural. He makes it human. He even manages to make it poetic.
Great actors render the banal and mundane both real and beautiful.
"GODDAMNIT YOU BITCH, YOU NEVER BACKED AWAY FROM ANYTHING IN YOUR LIFE, NOW FIGHT!"
When he starts shouting at her to fight, I'm by turns moved by the character's emotion, awed at the intensity, awed at Harris's ability to portray that raw feeling, and moved at Harris's willingness to dig so deeply into himself for our benefit.
One of those useful scenes that remind you that the very best actors - you decide how many they number - deserve their praise and status in society. True artists.
This isnt someone trying to cyber challenge you, but Im 2 for 2 with CPR ( i didnt bring them back but they both lived )and both times the paramedics used the paddles when they came. Neither had a pulse. Why do you say no defib with no pulse ? Thats the point of them right, to shock the heart into beating ?
paramedic training i got told me that we were supposed to use defib right away if we witness the arrest. either way though, dgil is right--use the paddles to restart.
Take a better CPR class There are shockable rhythms and non shockable rhythms. If the person is dead, go ahead and shock. Its wrong, but it won't hurt them. they're dead.
i think you mean flatline means no shock. if they're in ventricular fibrillation or "v-fib" there won't be a pulse and that is one of the shockable rhythms. the other shockable rhythm without a pulse is ventricular tachycardia or "v-tach". but yeah, i love how on tv and in the movies they are constantly shocking asystole or "flatline". perhaps one day they will listen to their medical advisor and not shock asystole.
Good scene, however I didn't enjoy the movie as much as everyone else does. I think the Charlie/Jack revive is my favorite 'revive scene' ever. THAT was one of the only times I ever cheered for a movie or TV show.
like cleopatra in 1963, abyss was full of problems, everything went wrong in the movie, bad weather accidents delay, and great pression, in those times there was no CGI so everything had to be (traditionally), that's why i say cleopatra and abyss were 2 very bad experiences for the crew and for cameron and manquiewitz....
@drchepa He pushed a little too far in this one. He ran out of film and STILL wasn't satisfied. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio had to run for her life to quit them beating the crap out of her. So what you see, Cameron wasn't happy with.
Huh? Not true. Everything you see in this probably made Cameron very happy. But, yes, he was probably not happy that Mary Elizabeth totally gave up on this scene, because they had to find alternatives. But, the alternative looks GREAT to me and I'm sure Cameron felt the same way.
it took 5 hrs to shoot this sceen and just when all was going well J.C ran out of film and shouts cut.all this time she lying on a cold surface in wet top it did not go down well with her

You don't use a defibrillator when someone doesn't have a pulse. Kinda ruins the scene..
