It uses an X, Y, Z plane to construct a 2D image which is displayed on the monitor. The only reason why it remotely looks 3D is because there is no depth in this video (we have 2 eyes, camera only has 1) and so it LOOKS like the penguins throwing something at the glass, when it really is not. Just a variable to look like bent sludge. Its not 3D.
An trancparency cup is real object. And an ink spot on the transparency cup is virtual 3d image. I think that this system can detect the transparency cup position and generate an interaction effect between real transparency object and virtual 3d image in realtime. I like their concept!

no its really 3d, you just cant see it in the video. it actually pops off the table in real life.
check out stereoscopic viewing and look into it. this isnt really stereoscopic but youll get the jist on how it works

The single camera lens can't see the 3D effect. You need to use both eyes to see the effect.
