American, English, French, Spanish, German, Swedish, Italian... all of our nationalities are guilty of shit... but we must never forget it... and learn from it.
Trumbo's point is that very few of the boys come home. This absurd song makes it sound as if they've just gone to Cub Scout camp or some shit. Meanwhile they've just gone to be maimed, killed, or dismembered (like the kid in his novel) and we all sit here singing songs so out of touch with reality that it's criminal.
and also good job bro i think you achieved what you set out to do those dudes below just looking to show off thier vast knowledge this song can apply to alot of things for lots of different people thanks man
Your country is no less guilty of genocide and murder then ours is. We're just bigger and have done more because of our size. Being european doesn't make you innocent.
Being European doesn't mean I am innocent. But I don't worship mass murderers and slaves of the oil-pharmaceutical companies. Neither my country slaughters other people for money and call it patriotism. I, like you, am not my country. I, unlike you, am just an individual who can think.
Your country's never done that, huh? Do you live in More's "Utopia"? (I thought that was just a book.) Please, I beg you, tell me where you're from so I can tear your nationalistic pretenses apart. Wonder if your country was the one brought down Hitler or welcomed him--like France did!
Greece made wars more than 2 milleniums ago. The moral of the age demanded it. Nowadays, we all condemn these acts of violence. Of course, it is totally insane to compare the glory of Ancient Greece to the warmongering savages of the Modern USA.

I think the song meaning resonates with just about any war.

And I think you miswrote the last line of the song. It should be "Till the boys come home" :P
And I guess you ripped that version right out of the movie called "Johnny Got His Gun", right?

Or (to be more precise) it was written wrongly by whoever made those grey-scaled slides.

Um, I don't get this vid. Why illustrate a British song from WW1 with American posters from later conflicts?
