Well, I think the real problem is the following:

In the original story as far as I can remember, Tolkien briefly mentions blacks from the south, but they are all with Sauron! Besides, in a letter written by him to someone, he describes orks resembling to mongolians of the least lovely type. I don't think Tolkien was racist, just not considerate enough.

On the other hand, it is fantasy, which does not need to have anything in common with reality. (So not even diversity of the real world.)

In defense of LOTR, I'd assume that everyone in the film had a very close genetic background, considering how geographically close they all were.
