This song has always been special but it reminds me of the last christmas that my little chihuahua was alive. He passed on March 1st before his 7th birthday. His name was wilbur and this song always reminds me of him
I still have the 45 of it, and I did not like the remake when I heard it. By then, the original was too embedded with memories and I didn't want it tampered with even by the star it belonged to. It wasn't 'broke'; it didn't need to be 'fixed.'
This 1970 version is the one that is played on the radio here in Detroit. I used to like the 1978 version better, but this one is just as good. My absolute favorite Christmas song!
For Christmas, a bunch of Carpenters fans around the world are gathering thank-you notes for Evelyn Wallace for all her years of service as Carpenters secretary and friend to Karen. Last day to write in is the 23rd! tinyurlDOTcom/thanksev
I used to not be much of a fan of her voice; of course as a child I thought she was an over dramatic fruitcake. But, now that I'm older (I also sang this song for a holiday concert), and I am in the situation where I can't see my best friend on the holiday, I was able to relate to this entirely. I love how heartfelt this song is and how it entirely captures every feeling. I really love her voice and tone, I hope someday I can live up to the wonderful legend she left behind. Favorite X-Mas song.
@drumlinedreamer Part of that is that Carpenter -one of the most distinctive female voices of the babyboomer generation- was given a high volume of syrupy songs to put over. She managed to do so, but they sounded best over the radio and in the company of beefier rock and roll, fore and aft. In that setting, Karen's voice was like a rich vanilla ice cream cone on a blistering summer day. Had she lived, an album of standards such as Rondstat did with Nelson Riddle, would have been very welcome.
They re-did this for their "Christmas Portrait," because I think Karen didn't like it, and Richard re-dubbed it in the 90s, but the original will always be my favorite. I came out when I was in the tenth grade. YIKES! My own daughter (I had her at 40) is in the tenth grade right now. Music is nothing like this now. Too nasty and angry.
I wish I was Christmasing With My ex- Magical Love Lovely GorGeous Lidia. This song is so Lovely Beautiful,Thanks for putting it on here.Wishing everyone lots Love and Wealth always,Cheerios.
Thanks so much for posting loved the pictures- and the carpenters what can I say fabulous- loved Karen the moment I heard her voice at the age of twelve. My very favorite music
@mb7668 One can spot the 1970 version (this one) by the way Karen sings "thelogson the fire" quickly instead of "the logs on the fire" more separated in 1978.
@audielee1953 I am a 43 year old black woman and remember crying like a baby for days when she died. I always loved The Carpenters and still play their music . This is one of my favourite christmas songs. Just goes to show that music transcends all barriers. BTW I am also from the caribbean.
What does the color of a person's skin have to do with the enjoyment of music -- or anything else? It's 2011 (almost 2012) and we (finally!) understand that there's only one race: the human race.
It's like they say, you are your harshest critic. I like both versions she did, but I can't hear any fault in this earlier version. Karen Carpenter was just...perfect.
I didn't realize KC re-recorded it seven years later, but I knew there must've been two versions. The last "Happy New Year too" is different in the two versions. I clearly remember this 1970 version better.
And I agree with posters that Richard was very, very talented.
What a voice! Today's pop divas know only melisma (how to fit an unending string of maudlin notes into each and every syllable of a song), but nothing about melody and phrasing.
It's Spring Now. And Karen and Richard Rule/ Christmas or Anyday. This Version is Fabulous. Thank You. My Karen Carpenter. Your Favorite Color Yellow is coming everywhere/ flowering now that it is Spring again. For You.
How can anyone not love the Carpenters...Karens voice was so majicial...such a joy to just listen too...those who voted dislike dont know what real music is...go listen to pditty or some of that crap.....
I got this single on a box set I bought from a flea market in China. I could tell it sounded different from the other video of this song on Youtube. This version is much more haunting. Karen really had a gift for portraying sadness or a longing. What better than to record a song about missing a loved one on X-mas??
Baby mommy will be remembering u this Christmas as u left to b with the angels last Christmas God took u from my arms & into his & u became an Angel on both Heaven & Earth. Baby u taught me so many things seeing it through ur eyes how the smallest thing counts & how u stayed strong ur courage & strength was more then any LiL' Cowgirl should ever have to endure u r always in my heart baby & i look for u in the stars every single night u r the brightest one!
@GaCountryGirl024 She obviously got a lot of her courage and grace from you GaCountryGirl024. Just as this song makes you miss your child, this song equally reminds me of my mom. God Bless you and yours...
Richard's unquestioned talents were in arranging, writing and performance. Karen had the incredibly rare gift of innately capturing the nuance of a vocal presentation, a la Sinatra or, in his generation, Diamond. Her ability to lay a track on the first take was beyond belief - many of their hit songs were first takes. I sometimes wonder what pleasures Karen and Richard could have given us if she hadn't been taken from us far too early.
@VASINGER I'm going to assume you're asking this because you might possibly not be familiar with the entire library of Carpenters material. Richard did indeed sing lead on many very appealing Carpenters songs: Your Wonderful Parade; Saturday; Get Together (originally by the Youngbloods); Piano Picker; Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing (originally by Neil Young) & others. Richard just knew that Karen was the STAR with the voice of an angel; I think he was glad to play 2nd banana.
@oliasdoug I have few of their LP's and I did notice he sang a few. Are you saying Richard didn't have a voice of an angel? I do like Karen's voice, though. I normally don't care for female vocals, as most are unpleaseant sounding. But she has a lower voice, much like Patsy Cline and it was very unique. I think she was very talented. But male singers are just as good. Roy Orbison had a great voice.
@VASINGER I have always believed Richard had a GREAT singing voice--clear, always on key & heartfelt; whether he would be dubbed as having the "voice of an angel" like Karen's is up for debate, but that doesn't mean I didn't love his style. (Have you heard his 44-second a cappella "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear"? Incredible!) The way he & Karen blended was a tour-de-force in the field of music & will never be duplicated; the world is richer because of their music. RIP, Karen...

Oh my God. This is Christmas! I got chills through my bones.... Karen Carpenter's deep, full-bodied, velvety smooth voice makes me feel like she feels. Oh yes she did. It puts me to sleep. I love her sooooo much. RIP KC.
This song is one of my favorites. The one thing I like about this song is that at the time of it's release, it was considered pop i guess. Anyway this song embraces the feel of a Christmas song; the harmonies/melody/chord structure generates the warmth and comfort of Christmas. This is something that is so lost in some of the so-called "contemporary / pop" Christmas songs of today. I wish some of the tunes of today put more thought in their work. Karen's voice endures, yet deeply missed.
from the very first time I heard this song in 1970 it has been my all time favorite Christmas song. No one can ever replace that voice, Karen Carpenter was truly one of the most incredible female vocalist's off all time.
i thought this sounded a little different than the version i'm used to hearing. warm and sweet and charming, as usual. karen carpenter...greatest vocalist ever
I can't believe it's been over 27 years since she passed away, and it still feels like it was yesterday. If I could have given my life to save hers, I would have. Just like my Mother, who passed away in 1992. I can't describe the joy Karen gave me, as a teenager, in the early 1970's. Karen Carpenter's songs, gave me joy and memories, that will live forever, and thus, so will she. This Christmas song is a classic, just like Karen.
No one then or today comes close to the crystal perfect phonetic quality of this lady's voice. And no one ever will. The Perfect Christmas Song. A modern Classic.
To my most precious knight, Merry Christmas. For mince pies n mulled wine, n christmas cuddles n truffles n you! Miss you always, but especially at this time of year. Thanks for the memories. Your Angel. Xx7
My absolute favorite Christmas song of all time! The song has so much meaning and is sung by Karen, who has the voice of an angel. Absolutely beautiful!
Each year about this this time, I get my annual reminder of just how beautiful Karen's voice was. While listening to Christmas songs on the radio, I will hear this one and just be overwhelmed with how pretty it is. I like her singing voice better than any other I've heard.
One of the sweetest voices of all time surely?

I wish you were with us too, Karen! As long as this beautiful song endures we'll always see the lights of your tree.
If there is a choir of angels in heaven I know you're in it.

We, her fans, all love and miss her.!!
Rest in Peace Karen.

Makes me cry in rage that seven people didn't like this song. How COULD they not like it? Would take a person with no heart to dislike it.

Each year about this this time, I get my annual reminder of just how beautiful Karen's voice was. While listening to Christmas songs on the radio, I will hear this one and just be overwhelmed with how pretty it is. I like her singing voice better than any other I've heard.
