Wonderful new Dick Hyman master class now on youtube. Dick discusses his career and musical concepts, plays two beautiful tunes, and plays duo pianos with NYC jazz piano monster Dave Frank. You will enjoy this! Type in "Dave Frank" Dick Hyman into youtube search.
The first time I heard this song was abt 2000. It just blew me away... there were literally tears in my eyes by the time it ended. I'm a big Jobim fan and while there are innumerable covers of his songs -- some of the greatest songs and covers you may ever find -- Peterson's "Wave" & Ella Fitzgerald's "Desafinado" are at the top of the heap!
Absolutely one of Oscar's best. I've been along time fan & I've put everything I have on Oscar Peterson into mp3's, From most of his Verve Catalog, To Cassette this song is from. From the cassette; "We Do Requests" - the Oscar Peterson Trio To Ultimate Oscar The CD., Featuring Some of his Best work as selected by Ray Brown. It's nice to know that some out here has a great appreciation of a Master, like Oscar. Thank -You!!
One of OP's all time greatest solos, at least in my view. The way he effortlessly combines melody and flawless technique truly dazzles the listener! Mankind was fortunate to have been graced by this genius and wonderful human being. RIP Oscar, you're deeply missed, both as a musician and person.
It's from 1969 off of Motions and Emotions, arranged by Claus Ogerman. Supposedly Oscar didn't like the piano he had so he went back into the studio and played his piano part against the recording of the orchestra. Perhaps it was having a chance to listen to the orchestra first freed him up to come up with the amazing solo that just builds and builds.
oh my god...I don't think I've ever heard a performance of anything this talented before. Can anyone recommend any songs that come close to this level of absolute musical genius?
I still get goosebumps and shudder at the memory of this mighty musician - in physical size as well as in his uncanny ability to elevate the collective nobleness of mankind through his utterly civilized presence. This cut bests Jobim's own versions: The crescendo builds smoothly, almost imperceptibly, but isn't out of the ordinary for O.P. until around 4:20, when one recognizes that this improvisation has likely transcended anything that ever floated out of a Copacabana club. Truly stellar!!!
OP was one of those special beings granted permission to enter the Garden of Eden, pick the hallowed fruit from the tree of knowledge and offer it to we mortals to enjoy. And how sweet it is.
Has there been a better work from this pianoforte maestro? The orchestral accompaniment just enhances the polish that Peterson lavishes on those ivory keys. Masterful entertainment!
I've been listening to this for over 15 years and it still blows my mind.
Oscar is an "Open Channel"... Effortless... He really feels the song... lets the song take control of him... and just expresses it beautifully. It's damn near orgasmic by the end... Just fantastic.
i heard this track for the first time about 10years ago, and i am still amazed. my favorite musical instrument is the piano, i love Jobim and for Oscar Peterson to perform with this arrangement is timeless. this should be put in a time capsule, hopefully it will be around 1000 years from now! Breathtaking!
thank you, im glad you like it. I love this track. I really like the photo too. Oscar was indeed a genius. But Jobim wrote this and said he could never have played it as well as Oscar. They were both true great Jazz men.
It''s wonderful to hear this again. The 'Motions and Emotions' album shows such a sensitive side to OP's playing - and this song is just gorgeous, as is most of Jobim's music! Many thanks.
IMO, this is the greatest recording by the greatest jazz pianist of all time -- Oscar Peterson. The ingredients are all there: perhaps the best composition by one of 20th century;s greatest composers (Jobim), the best orchestrator of Jobim (Ogerman), and the most sophisticated piano interpreter of the bossa nova (Peterson).
thanks for the comment. I agree, I suspect many ppl just hit this and listen to a part, but to listen to whole piece and hear it 400 times later and it still has that freshness. Wonderful piece played by a master and written by one too.
Yes I have put it on in the car while driving somebody and they are just blown away by it. They can barely fathom how a man can play with such beauty and technique.
I don't know if I listened to it 400 times, but I had the CD and that was one of my favorites on it. I suppose I listened to it maybe a hundred times, the whole thing :D I like the way it picks up dynamics at around 3:50 :) Another tune I have listened to that often is Last Summer in Rio by Azymuth, despite its almost 11 minutes.
Yes indeed. His ebullient version of Jobim's Triste is a real treat. Spectacular, yet stays very musical throughout the fireworks and never lets up to the end.
This is without doubt the best version of "wave". If you hear this first thing in the morning, it will make you wanna get out of bed even on those laziest of days! Thanks for posting..
Absolutely one of OP's great interpretations of Wave, really the best and with a great arranger, Claus Ogerman, who wrote the charts. Oscar was really on fire at this session, although he laid the piano tracks at another time, another place and not live with the orchestra, because he didn't like the piano, so the session was postponed

Awesome song composed by THE Brazilian genius Antonio Carlos Jobim (there so many others!)and beautifully performed here by Oscar Peterson. Thanks for sharing...
thank you for the comment. This track can easily be overlooked. If you listen to it time and time again its obvious its a classic.
Jobim is a talent. He admits Oscars version is the best. Oscar was such a grat player. Ilove the photo too. Its a young man who gave us so much pleasure. A great for sure. Who can argue that.
Great Version by a great musician! Even the master himself Tom Jobin couldn´t have played it better! However, I would like to see aversion where Mr. Peterson plays Wave live! Does anyone have such a version?
When I think of Oscar Peterson, I think of this song. Canada's greatest musician, this is such a classic. Antonio Carlos Jobim is the only person who could duplicate this, and he wrote it. Even he couldn't top this!
This tune was written by the very talented Brazilian musician Jobim, who in another YouTube clip says that he "dares to play it" even after this earlier version by "the great, great Peterson".
i have to agree with you there. it is an amazing number. one of my favourites. one of those tracks you can listen to over and over again and never get bored, because each time you listen, you notice something new, if it isnt the build up at the end, then the ryhthm section, not mentioning oscars double hand techniques!
