@harmonize209 those are super swamper tsl narrows. those are prolly 33x9.5's or something. they are amazing offroad but are not used much cuzz onroad theyre terrible and most people would use iroks or boggers instead for trail only rigs.
@tuk2332 low has a lower gear ratio (numerically higher) then high range. so it gives you more rpms at lower speeds increasing the amount of torque to the wheels....
ok should have aired down and power brake some of the Subaru people run turning brake instead of locker so that they can lock a wheel that is spinning this it kinda cool cheap way to go about 100$ for all for independent brakes two handles for the back cables and a single turning brake hydrolic handle for the front
@hollins43 take a look at the black jeep when it trying to pass that small gully. You notice that only one front tire and one rear tire are pulling/turning that is a open differential. Not a true 4 wheel drive. Lockers fit inside the differential and lock/tie the axle shafts to make both tires turn as one unit. All four tires turn at the same time equals more traction. True 4wheel drive. All front ends are open no traction aid from the factory. Ford had a option for limted slip in front yearsago
Yeah - love to see a well put together rig! I'd go with lockers over a lift any day! I recently bought an FJ Cruiser and the stock ELocker in the rear and the ATRAC front is suprising amazing. Almost on part with my TJs ARB Air's. Guess car manufacturers are getting a clue...
Not saying this video is the case but I love how some people will spent thousands on lift and tires to only neglect lockers! nothing will help your traction and off-road performance more then all 4 wheels spinning!
The first two things any wheeler should get for their rig are:
1. lockers (even if u don't have alot to spent the lunchbox style locker is very affordable, $500 to lock both ends)
2. A winch or at the very least a hi-lift, nothing worse then gettin stuck for hours
I have since put electric lockers in the front with limited slip .Also my back have limited slip with no lockers.I find I hardly need the electric lockers with limited slip all the way around .I'm sure I will find a time to use the lockers soon Thanks for the comment.456 gears was the biggest improvement after the high clearance tires were installed.
@Mitchumthegreat I'm sorry but I have to disagree, #1 skid plates and rocker protection!!!
#2 putting a lunchbox locker in a d30/d35 is just silly, yes it may only cost $500. for the front and rear but someone with no mechanical experience will prolly shovel out another $500. the first time they break an axle and with a d35/d30 combo they WILL break axles!!!
Good tires and the knowing how much difference there is between airing down and not airing down. (it is like night and day)
@PirateJeep I would still have to agree with my statement and let me clarify, Jeff. At least in the area I wheel @ which is a lot of deep mud and steep hills, nothing more has helped me then the automatic lockers I have in my front and rear, which is a Dana 30 and a 44 not that garbage 35 :) have been a god sent as far as traction is concerned, I would rather crappy tires and all fours spinning then only 2 grabbing where there is the least amount of traction.
@Mitchumthegreat I respect what you are saying and will leave it at that before a ten year debate on lockers is started...lol
My wife has an '04 TJ and we locked her d35 and second run broke her axle...I decided right away that we would NOT put a locker back in the d35 (you are better off welding a d35 than locking it) and we picked her up a d44 from a Rubi w/ the air locker and it is sweet...for the front we went with a Detroit TrueTrac.
@PirateJeep Cheers Jeff, at the end of the day it all falls under personal experiences we have had. But we all know these are just big boy toys that eventually break no matter the care and money we put in to them. Happy wheelin :)
@PirateJeep I want to assure ANYONE that anything that is purely a bolt on mod i.e. an automatic locker can be done by ANYONE with no prior experience. Also I would value recovery gear higher as I wheel alone mostly and have lived through a 6+hour recovery b/c I didnt have the proper tools. To reiterate getting to where you need to go, and getting out if you get stuck are more valuable to me then protection, to this day still my stock bumpers have worked just fine for me personally
@PirateJeep I have had my automatic lockers in for almost 2 years(Aussie) and have had no axle failure. I also am not light on the gas at all times. Ofcourse the jeep takes on slightly different characteristics with an auto locker on either end but once you get used to it, and it is not difficult to, then driving is just as enjoyable as before. Again these are just my opinions inmy experience not trying to prove you wrong or anything Jeff as we all know youare very knowledgeable and experienced.
@SkiDooFan9 Google your jeep model along with the word lockers, there is a plethora to choose from, I had Aussies front and back until recently when I got ARB's (where I live I need a selectable locker, I wont get into why, thats another issue).
Aussie locker is a great first locker, its a great value. I installed the Aussies myself and it was VERY easy with no prior experience, the ARB's I had a authorized dealer install b/c those are a little trickier.Welcome to the money pit know as Jeep :P
@SkiDooFan9 That's very much situational, depending on your driving habits, drive train parts, and size of tires tires. I have 35" tires but have chromoly axles which are quite a bit stronger then stock. You will find out once you modify one part of your jeep you'll learn you need to upgrade something else. that's if you upgrade to larger tires. I would say your ok with locked differentials and stock tires, just don't go too crazy with the skinny pedal!
@boardingpass04 Agreed, 3rd imo would be a good tread tire, I have BFG KM2's (amazing traction), but I wanna try the good year mtr w/kevlar next (if its good enough for the military its good enough for me). I had Super swamper TSL SX's, which had even better traction then the KM's but my jeep is my daily driver so had to get rid of them
@Mitchumthegreat i disagree with your first thing to get. i think the first two things someone should get is good bumpers for protection and recovery and the winch i can agree with. honestly people need to learn how to wheel more with open diffs lockers just get you into trouble more times than they get you out of trouble.
Umm lockers will do a shit ton more for u then a bumper,.. i still have my stock bumper as matter of fact, albeit slightly sawzalled, and im glad i put the 200-400 bucks towards lockers and not a bumper.
