It's amazing exactly how much of a delicate balance exists and how it is all tied together. I've thought more about the possible damage we are doing to the quality of food through genetic manipulation than organic matter depletion, but this definitely brings it into the light for me.
My father has been a farmer since the 30's. He always rotated the crops around to get the most out the land with out over using fertilizers. The Indians basically used this concept. Along with numerous other early civilizations.
So I'm confused and want to know more. Here's my broad concept of what I know. To sum it up.
We remove fertilizers from an area high in organic compound. We then use fertilizers on another area that is depleted from over farming. By doing this we have depleted both areas. We harvest everything and return nothing to the soil.
