great video, really helpful, but I just want to say there are a lot of songs that are much easier for a beginner to play than this one, so Jody's title "how to play the ukulele" is kind of misleading. Those B minor chord changes are not all that easy and I'd hate to see beginners give up too soon if they think this is a typical first song. Just sayin'.

@artoftranscription what would you recommend as an actual beginner song then? i've had my uke for over a year now and i'm no musician. as embarrassing as it is, i still haven't learned an actual song because you're right. a lot of people say this song or that song is a great beginner song to learn on uke, but they really aren't. so, i often find myself giving up or something.

@doubleA1326 Use your index finger to cover the first fret then use either your ring finger or middle finger for the 3rd fret 4th string :) Remember that the bottom string is 1 then goes up to the 4th string G.

either use only the fleshy part of one finger for strumming or use your fingernails like a pick down and your thumbnail like a pick upwards - its a good sound and its easy to play. It's a bit like flamenco guitar technique if you're familiar with that

Make sure your ukulele is in tune. There are webpages that will help you learn how to tune, and some that will even play the correct notes to tune to. Also make sure your strings are stretched properly, otherwise it will keep going out of tune every time you play. Search for videos on how to stretch the strings on youtube.

i have a beautiful mahogany soprano ukulele with shitty plastic strings, yea and it sounds like boo-boo.

its just the strings not the size, you probably have a soprano like me which is the smallest size, but he has a tenor so dont worry, just get new strings.

This really helped me out in beginning to learn how to play the uke, but going from guitar to uke is a huge style difference. So I was wondering if you could do Isreal's version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow with a little more intricate stumming pattern (possibly with arpeggios) so I can learn a more tradition and more interesting style of ukulele.

I must say this is definitely not for absolute beginners. Going from Bb to Bbm proves a difficult task... In fact, playing just Bbm itself is hard. I think I'll practice from other songs and come back to this later. Can't pass down learning the chords to a great song.

playing ain instrument and singing it at the same time is a lot harder than it seems. don't let it get you down if you can't do both at once, just keep practicing and you'll get it eventaully.

I dont the play Ukulele, yet, but I dont know about that "My Dog Has Fleas" tuning.

(I dont know if notes are differant in like "original" Hawian tuning or what ever but there are no notes M or H in music, that I know of.)

Try to use a little more of the side of your fingers and press down harder to get a clearer tone. It is hard to bar notes on lower frets... just keep practicing!

The up at the end is just a "sratch". I think most players just throw it in for style, but if you hear alot of Ska music It's used to keep beat and other things.
