  • if im not mistaken this guy worked with crkt to design a few knives

  • Damn I can't help but think of what that would do to a human being. Those mats look tougher than my arms.

  • @CoolLikePenguinNuts You're right, that's why one needs to be smart about fighting. How to avoid a confrontation is just as important as what to do when it starts.

  • great weird and wonderful vid man

  • 1:02 cutting through the cross-section of the matt rolls= EPIC!

  • Less than 2 seconds to draw and cut... Nice!

Wouldn't want to be on the receiving side of that.

  • Wonderful technique. Very nice video

  • i respect the man an his arts, but comparing a japanese blade to a euro one is stupid. both are completely different in purpose. those were some just WOW cuts .you whole heartedly took alot of time to learn that, like anyone of any blade would have to do.

  • too bad it's a Japanese blade...

  • ever tried a target defending itself or moving targets?

  • 1:00 holy shit

  • 日本でも道場を開設してくれないだろうか・・・。

  • 0:02の刀身がキラッと光るところが最高にかっこいいな

  • Japanese bushido is just incredible...

  • すげえなこの人

  • 凄い精度だな~、最後きっちり巻き藁の真っ芯を叩き切ってる。

  • 物凄くスタイリッシュ

  • 片手でここまでできるのが凄い

  • Using what sword?

  • Amazing.

  • 返す立ちの威力が弱まって無い所がすごいです。

    よほど訓練されたと思います。

After you cut the object and return it to cut it again,

    the power doesn't lose itself.

Very skilled and well trained TAMESHIGIRI.

  • HI BILLY MAYS HERE

  • What a useful skill.....

  • This is BS folks. He is really using a lightsaber, they just edited the video to make it look like a razor sharp samurai katana.

  • cutting straight from the saya. very nice.

  • @jubitoftw is the sword. rly sharp one u.u

  • perfect form,flow, completion

  • omigoto!

  • Bigger bones = bigger muscle... = heavier body = better stability...

    That is some power though...

  • IAIDO!!!!

  • 美しいと思います。日本刀と日本人の心をご理解いただけているようで、

    とても嬉しく思います。 質問がございます。 日本人に比べ長身にお見受け

    また、刃長をお教えください。

  • @Katsujinken4 bullshit

  • @OOFUJISAN 何を言ってるんだ?おまえは!意味を理解しているのか?

    私は、刃長=Blade length(HA-CHOU)を質問している。何か文句があるのか?

  • @Katsujinken4

    熱くなっても仕方がないですよ.

  • @crapengine1990

    私としたことが・・・クールダウンいたしました。ご忠告感謝いたします。

  • What type of steel is he using, and does he go for Hi or no-Hi?

  • @Drag0nzlay3r He prefers no-Hi for more cutting power, yet sometimes uses Hi for many multiple combination cuts.

  • @Drag0nzlay3r The steel is probably L6 bainite made by howard clarke. Youtube L6 bainite.

  • @standard1664

bugei dot com That will give you your answer as to what sort of steel.

  • なんかうれしいなwww

  • I do not want to piss this guy off and later meet him in some dark back alley.

  • why does he remind me of stephen hayes so much?

  • いやいや、日本の動画でもなかなか見れない技術力。

    やっぱ白人の方が片手でも刃筋をみださぬり力故か

    純粋な練習量によるものか

  • beautiful and excellent.

  • 綺麗な居合いですね

  • One of the very few guys on youtube that I've seen cut straight from a draw. That's gotta count for something.

  • no zanshin

  • Now i dont know a whole lot about katana or swordmanship, but damn this looks awesome >_>

So to the people saying hes crap? I doubt he is, try doing all the cuts as good and fast as he did with those thick mats, i know i probably cant >_>

And to the people saying hed be useless in real battle? Dude.. 1 of those cuts would fuck you up badly, and he can do several precise cuts in 1 or 2 seconds o_o

  • Damn this guy is awesome

  • From a glance he kinda looks like Billy Mays =]

  • @DualKendoSticks HI BILLY MAYS HERE WITH SOME FANTASTIC TAMESHIGIRI!

  • @Ronald3570 Haha, classic.

  • FATALITY

  • NO !

No, James, no tameshigiri for you !!!

  • Who the hell dislikes this, haters,I guess even James Williams has them

  • how incredibly beautiful

  • I'm sorry if this sounds really ignorant but I really don't know anything about Japanese swordsmanship but this guy is making this looks so easy. I feel like just by watching this vid I could pick a samurai sword and slice and dice these matted rolls just like him. haha Is it really that hard to do what he is doing?

  • @BeeboiZam it seems to be easy because he is a master...it's easier to twirl a sword than making a really precise cut...the fact is that a sword weight no less than 1 kg, not too much, but the first time you handle it you have a strange feeling, cause the weight its all in the final part of the blade...most times you make tameshigiri the cut mats don't stay up like this, so it's quite difficult

  • @BeeboiZam you should try it,it is definitely harder than it looks, expensive too,but fun

  • last one was cool :D

  • truely a great swordman and skilled martial artist. i am interested as to why there are 44 dislikes?

  • Very Nice You should go to expert village and ask them to replace the man they have with some lessons from Mr Williams. It is embarsing to the US to have the current man they show.

  • I was wondering if someone could comment on my tameshigiri to tell me what im doing wrong, like how i need to fix my form. It would be much appreciated. thanks

  • The Tameshigiri stands caught my eye at the official Bugie Trading Company website. Terrible..just god awful! One of them had a galvanized T brace from a local hardware store. I knew a Japanese guy who was a finish carpenter in San Francisco who did a lot of sailboat work. He had a lot of traditional tools, but for the most part he was a contemporary carpenter. His handmade business cards were yellow cedar, but felt like card paper. Mortise and tenon your stands! That crap is embarrassing right?

  • @FJoeForty are you complaining about a product they don't even sell? They've got mats and a roller, and katana kake. I didn't find tameshigiri stand even after poking around the website. Anyway, it's a post that you stick a wet rug on - what more do you need?

  • beatyful

  • That's a registered badass right there!

  • pause at 0:11. Twinkle!

  • @james79310 for what?????????

  • I'd beat his sorry swordsman ass with ease

  • @caiodbs oh, yeah of course, ...and then you'll beat chuck norris bahh!

  • @caiodbs and how long have you been using a Katana??

  • Great work James, lots of hours training resulting in the best display of great swordsmanship. 10/10

  • This guy is fucking insane! what katana is he using?

  • @k00lkane - almost positive that is the Bugei Samurai right there.

  • This guy is fucking insane!

  • That's the best I've ever seen! Bloody hell!

  • Very Nice!! Battoujutsu is only for pro swordmen!

  • Could someone tell me... Is this Bugei's Bamboo katana?

I swear at 0:41 I can see the gold bamboo themed tsuba... but I could be wrong.

  • The katana nerds are hilarious. If they watched Musashi himself practice, they'd tell him how he'd get himself killed in a real fight.

  • @wolpack1116 My God, Thank You! Armchair swordsmen...The very best and most skilled in their imagination.

  • @wolpack1116 oh, when was the last time YOU watched Musashi trolling nerd, hehe, and surprise, surprise you haven't even uploaded ONE video yourself, chicken shit. Whether this could be used in a 'real' sword fight (highly unlikely in the 21st century) it still takes skills you can't even dream about from your mommie's basement where you live.

  • @eteune hes right though whens the last time you watched musashi practice never youre being a huge hippocrite

  • seems like a lot better than those old jap guys, all form and no killing intent

this guy at least cuts on the draw

  • the one where he leaves the middle segment standing even after cutting the top off is outstanding. It has a lot to do with consistent velocity, not just angle

  • this as awesome. perfect cuts.

the one at 0:35 was amazing.

  • in real battle he would be dead, after his first combination...

  • @DonRubinjo

um, this is to practice effective cutting. obviously this is not exactly waht you would do in combat, but the cuts themselves are what you do in battle. everything ELSE changes.

and have you tried cutting a mat before? I'd love to see that. I'd also love to see you defend yourself against those cuts.

This guy is VERY good. If you disagree, please get a sword and try cutting a mat like that,

  • @dragonking700

he wouldn´t cut amour with this strikes. He disrespects japanese swordsmanship with this stupid cutting.

Every girl can do some cuts,... thats not the art to handle a sword.

I got an nice old sword, i would cut with it. With his fucksword i would try to cut stone to fuck it up... it has no meaning!!!

  • @DonRubinjo

um, okay, you obviously know nothing about medieval warfare in Japan.

There are many places on the body that are not armored.

and no, not every girl can "do some cuts". There's a woman at my dojo who's a blackbelt in sword, and she still cannot cut a mat. Please male a video of yourself cutting mats with your sword. I would love that.

and this IS japanese swordsmanship, bro, whether you like it or not. this is what samurai did. the mat is the same as a human body.

  • I´am talking about swordsmanship.

Read my comment again and than proof if there is any truth in in!

I now a lot, no worry. What the heck is a blackbelt in iai?If she cant cut a mat, than somthing is wrong, its all about bad technic. And swordmanship is not all about cutting.

  • @dragonking700 The cut is the very last result and is stil done, no need to think about... Also his mats are very soft. If you realy stick to this, that this is japanese swordsmanship than you now nothing about. THIS IS NOT FALLOWING THE RULES OF TRADITION!!! ... please accept it, I must teach you this!!!

  • @DonRubinjo Your poor spelling and grammar negates the seriousness of your comment. As for his mats being 'very soft', you're obviously an idiot. A full tatami mat, which are 3-4" thick, has the same density as human flesh; James Williams here is cutting what looks to be 5 mats rolled together, easy, probably equating something about the human torso and made it look like the easiest thing in the world. A cut like this would cleave through bone like a hot knife through butter.

  • @ChishioAme

You must not like my grammer its not my language,... sorry.

I dont want to waste my time, but :"A cut like this would cleave through bone like a hot knife through butter".

    Think about you sad.

By the way, I cutted the first time to day. I can cut the big tatami as well, shure i would cut them down.

  • I just wanted to help you to understand what is swordsmanship, and you calling me idiot? Sorry, I dont want to read an answer from you anymore, bye!

  • @DonRubinjo "he wouldn´t cut amour with this strikes. He disrespects japanese swordsmanship with this stupid cutting."

This is called tameshigiri. It is VERY traditional in Japanese swordsmanship, and rather essential for perfecting technique. So how on earth is that disrespectful to ANYthing? And "try to cut stone to fuck it up"? Are you high? You are saying nothing but meaningless babble.

  • Beautiful Technique, thanks for posting..

  • James Williams also known as uncle of Chuck Norris :)

  • @elsheedoqueso

James Williams also uses Paul Chen Katanas so they are pretty good.

Copy this --> CAS HANWEI / JAMES WILLIAMS TAMESHIGIRI Performance <--

into the search box and watch. Hope this helps.

    Rob.

  • is this supposed to be impressive or a joke or am i missing something ?

  • @Demonwicked Impressive :)

  • @Demonwicked

are you kidding me? you can do that? prick

  • straw poles dont hit back! impressive dry land swimming

  • Some really nice cuts. But you are useing too much strength. Still, REALLY good job! =)

ps: this guy is awsome /watch?v=RS2YcBbubs8&NR=1

  • Comment removed

  • 0:47 fucking beautiful.

You hardly ever see anyone do that kinda demo in person.

  • @elsheedoqueso Since you are a practicing martial artist, honestly the best advice would be to ask your instructor.

  • woah this dude is like tameshigiri jesus

  • MAD SKILLS!!!!

  • That one cut where he leaves the cut tatami still standing then cuts it again is awesome. Now imagine if that cut was on your neck. He could decapitate you and leave the head still sitting on the stump of your fucking neck and cut the top of your head off and you couldn't do shit!!!!!!!!

  • Crazy sharp katana, crazy sharp, crazy skill

  • God damn! He is a lot better than the FatGuy from Coldsteel!

  • @hectorbasti hahhhaaaahaaahaaaa good one... :)))

  • @hectorbasti cz the cold steel guy is not an expert. he is just showing how gd his knife can cut. but this guy is a champ i think....

  • @6leafdom

If you check the background of the "fat guy" from Cold Steel, you will see that he studied many martial arts, but still sucks. This guy used to promote the CRKT blades. I believe James designed the Hitsatsu series. Both have the skills but if you want to laugh....the fat guy's videos will help a lot. =)

  • @hectorbasti I call BS on his martial arts background that or MCdojos.

  • @hectorbasti yeah that "fat guy" from coldsteel isnt realy trying to show much skill in the cold steel videos, his main goal is to show the quality of the blades they are selling, where as this guy is just simply showing his tameshigiri skills whick are indeed impressive. lol

  • @hectorbasti Because you know... MCDojos count as martial arts right?

  • @hectorbasti Yeah, and James also designed the hisshou, a beefier and deadlier hissatsu designed on the request of special forces operators in Afghanistan who said they needed something that could potentially take off a head or an arm. If you haven't heard of it, it definitely merits looking up--one scary knife. Not quite a khukuri if you ask me, but still very impressive ;)

  • @hectorbasti wooord up. crkt is 100% quality. ive seen a cold steel sword fall apart during a comedy skit on Tosh.0. and Tosh was making fun of the fat guy too, hahahaha.

  • @hectorbasti I used to work for the "Fat Guy", and you're right!

  • @hectorbasti Well, duh. ;) Using a much better sword, too.

  • It's not that sharp... (extreme sarcasm) e.e

  • awesome cutting.looks like fun

  • Awesome...from top to bottom!

  • No, no and NO !

  • That's the best I've seen. Excellent slicing. CLEAN cuts.

  • This is the white guy they should have gotten to play in The Last Samurai lol

  • @BlackShinobiShozoku i agree.LOL

  • my dick feels small now :(

  • @nofingershaha it has always been small XD

  • That is some crazy power, speed, and precision! The guy could cut someone in half before they even realized he drew his sword!

  • Williams is the man. Unsurpassed technique and underrated strength. One-handed cuts on fat rolls like that are very difficult. Much respect.

  • parabens ao mestre james williams pela dedicação ao budô

  • holy crap!

  • Tom Cruise is the better samurai.

    :)

  • I am a practitioner of Japanese sword arts and feel a great responsibility to defend it's roots. Having said that and without regard for what anyone else thinks...very few Japanese swordsmen surpass this man, atleast at cutting.

  • with all these fake martial artists and loony tunes on you tube lately its refreshing to see a REAL master performing our art! Master Willams you are trully splendid *bow*

  • @Kenjutsumasters

    trully or truely ? :-D

  • @yoshicz I wasnt aware I was participating in a spelling Bee I will make sure to be careful next time lol

  • @yoshicz or truly? If you're going to correct someone, don't be wrong as well...

  • William sensei are splendid! I really look to up him.

  • Yeah, his skills are amazing but if u want 2 watch real slicing search ISAO MACHII on youtube.

  • WOW! He cut the part already cutt!

    Oh my god!

  • just had a revelation.. james Williams was the first person i saw do tameshigiri and now i am judging my local schools instructors with waaaay too much prejudice.. wow.. just grew a little

    lol

  • I'm sorry to say that these are not nice tameshigiri ! In fact, these are NOT tameshigiri AT ALL ! It's just "cutting rolled tatami with a sharp blade" exercice !

There's no chiburi, no noto ! And when he starts, he looks like if he was on the way for a 100m contest against Hussein Bold !

  • Tameshigiri is cutting tatami. Chiburi and noto are exercises going with Iaido. Iaido does have Tameshigiri in it as well but James Williams does Kenjutsu and both forms are different but they compliment each other

  • I've always seen noto and chiburi, even in kenjutsu. The difference with Iaido, is that the forms are differents, but they still exist. I can't see those movments in this video ! That's what i'm noticing here. Even Koreans are doing chiburi and noto in their sword practice !

  • James Williams does perform chiburi and noto, it is just not seen here. probably edited for time constraints.

  • He does both kenjutsu and iaijutsu. I have one of his DVDs. Nami-ryu is, I think a very legitimate style, though I am not familiar with many others.

  • yes you are correct. The video has been edited here.

  • After each cut he looks down, that would be dangerous action if the other guy's sword fall down.

  • I'm honored to have met Mr. Williams at a Don Angier seminar. I'm truly impressed with both his swords and his sword swing!

  • This is one of the fastest battojutsu swings I have ever seen. overwhelming

  • Billy Mays here with another fantastic product, today I bring you the slasher, you can use it for mowing, edging and even getting those tough stains on your jeans, Buy it now and you'll get the new Demo of oxyclean that really works! =3 bad joke nut he does look like Billy Mays!

  • oh !!

    samurai!!

  • Just a guess, but I think the thick roll stays in place better for double and triple cuts.

  • That's true.

  • Very Skilled!

  • This was filmed 6 blocks from my home, and I never realized that until today! And THAT is cutting. Thanks for the stand guys, I treat it like one of the dead sea scrolls now. Honor.

  • I love that shine at 0:12.

  • No doubt about it.

  • I get chills, every time I watch this clip. WOW

  • Imagine a human body instead of the tame... :)

  • respect

  • I love this video. I really wouldn't have believed it, if I didn't see it for myself. Oh, tameshigiri is designed to test both, the swordsman AND the sword. Place a european long sword in James Williams's hands and see if it matches up.

  • Hey has and matched it.

    watch?v=-vleC5-tvx4

  • Thank you for the video. It is a wonderful demonstration, but hardly a match. The thickest mat roll was less than half of the thickest tatami roll, used here. Still, nice video.

  • ACTUALLLY.....................blablablablabla

write all on youtube so we are all happy and say actually before a sentence so seem we are a sort of expert......

ahahaha in every video on youtube I read ACTUALLY and people start quarrel and discuss about arguments far from the video,

example : in a manga video someone arrived to talk about politics and discuss with many others joining to an epic forum battle!

    THIS IS INCREDIBLE!

    bye I WON

  • powerfull martial artists often slack a little on technique but clearly not this guy.

  • Which Bugei sword is he using? The cuts where the blade is so sharp that it leaves the top piece still sitting there are extremely impressive. I'd love to buy such a blade just to have one before the idiots in Congress ban them for our "own good."

  • Haha... foreign iaidoka make me LOL, but James Williams is quite skilled!

  • Foreign iaidoka? What is the relevance of nationality or ethnicity? Either you can do it or you can't. The sword doesn't care about what color skin you have or what flag you've got waving over you.
