I was working on the West Side, near the 405 and Sepulveda when this happened. So I had to get from there all the way to Pasadena where I live. I left work at 4 PM and didn't get home until a little after 8 PM. And that was because every surface street was packed (I knew better than to even try to get on the 405). It was like a parking lot around there all the way up though Hollywood. Plus it was a Friday afternoon. I had never been so happy to see the 134 in my life when I finally got to it.
Why did that Crane Operator extend that boom before putting the outriggers out and down? Or, why did he retract the outriggers before retracting the boom to a safe length, per the "On Rubber Chart", in the operators cab?
What a time I had trying to get to the 101 from the airport. Nothing was moving north. Not Sepulveda, not side streets, not even the cut through and over Beverly Hills.
A friend of mine gave me a ride to LAX on this very freeway on this very day and hour before this mess happen. I remember thinking how lucky I was that I decided to leave early to the airport.
Looks like Godzilla came across the freeway and knocked down that crane, and causing minor destruction and a traffic jam, Godzilla is Real!!!!!, Godzilla is destorying Los Angeles!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was thinking, why didn't they break up some of the barrier between the two sides, use two of the lanes for oncoming traffic and two for the ones queueing?
That would have probably taken a lot longer than it did to just work the wreck and get it cleared. The lanes were re-opened in a few hours. It just happened in a really bad spot. That's one of the worst interchanges in the U.S. Hence the construction to try and make it a little better. Besides, people here in California don't think proactively. They'd never try anything a little different in the interest of releiving traffic congestion.
Yeah, but the first car in line can often be the last one to get though when they're diverting people off of a freeway. I know what you mean though. It would be cool to watch from close up.
my dad works down there with cranes also he runs a LTM-1220 liebherr and that crane that tipped over was a 60 ton Rough terrian crane i think i cant really rember but the operator forgot to put the swing lock in while he was moving and the crane swung and tiped over

Notice that the outriggers weren't down. He probably was trying to reposition the crane while extended.

I remember this day also. I made it to work at LAX with a minute to spare. I absolutely hate the 405 freeway, it needs to be demolished.
