if proven correct. It is easy to say private money should stay in private hands because they are more efficient than the large bureaucracy that is our federal government, however, when private enterprise grows to the point of being morphologically similar to the government, with the only check and balance being law riddled with loopholes,
and ambiguities, and the only responsibility being shareholders profit,
it becomes easy to see how they may suffer the same inefficiency's. Further more, it becomes easier to leverage workers when there is a great abundance of cheap labor. Monopolies have the leverage not only to control workers, but also over supply and demand which controls the cost of goods and services. i am part of a family where you can see first hand this so called "rejected reality". Business's that are too big to fail seems awfully
He's payed morgage on a house which the bank is going to repossess, even though they have well payed for the price of the house. A house they have lived in for 25 years. Your tellin me that a 54 year old man that has had two heart attacks is supposed to just bounce back with out any help. That sounds like a sycophantic joke made by somebody thats never been in that situation.
Friedman was brilliant, but to accept any ideology as totalitarian and unquestionable, and to slander another with little more argument than to dismiss it as irrational is absurd.
Her argument is against idealist or extremist ideology. Mao, Stalin, and so on did use many of the same techniques, could it be the point however, that the opposite end of the spectrum does as well. Perhaps more covertly. Another main point is that the violence of it has been disconnected with the economics. When in fact the economic extremism has been largely unsuccessful and harmful to the poor and middle classes. Both the means and the end are unjust.
@mouvement715 Both "Left" and "Right" wing use concepts of Friedmanism. Because he is about using "free market" jargon to re-establish monopolies and downgrade wages and benefits for workers. He is not a capitalist, he is a corporate croniest.
wake up America-your rights are being taken away in front of your nose-its like nazi germany all over again-didnt bush say that the constitution is just a piece of paper! And now they are wipeing thier ass with it
The unions and their supporters were highly unpopular following the 78-79 "winter of discontent", which allowed Thatcher a landslide victory. The strikers clearly did not speak for the majority of the population as Klein claims.
"I approve of none of these authoritarian regimes—neither the Communist regimes of Russia and Yugoslavia nor the military juntas of Chile and Brazil. . . . I do not regard visiting any of them as an endorsement. . . . I do not regard giving advice on economic policy as immoral if the conditions seem to me to be such that economic improvement would contribute both to the well-being of the ordinary people and to the chance of movement toward a politically free society." - M Friedman
In chile economy was in bad condition roughly for 10 years after the coup even or because of after "reforms" in Milton's vein. The economu was worse than when Alende held sway. The economy began to grow only in mid 80's but the huge income inequalities persisted. Friedman also must have realised that in a free country reforms like these (besically dystopia in the making) could not have been possible. It's possible only in countries like Chile (pinochet) or China, Russia etc
Milton must have realized that "reforms" in Chile could not have been possible in a democratic country only in countries like Russia or China it is possible to introduce full dystopia in Friedman's style. This kind of economy (and this is a kind of economy not the only one) that needs a clean, blank slate.
Wow this woman talks about the miners strikes, my Dad was in that strike 1984 i was a year old about my mum and dad still talk about it, they could hardly feed us, the community pulled together tho people would give my parents trolleys full of food, my dad and his brothers would nick coal from near the pit and sell it on or keep for our own uses ( we had coal fires up until about 96 i think ) my dad was proud to be on strike I still dont fully understand what it was about.

What is going on here, this is total commie shit. Her facts are total bullshit, why isnt any one calling her on it. Does anyone wonder why everything is made in China?
what facts are total bullshit? If you're gonna run your mouth then you'd better provide some evidence showing that her facts are wrong...
I hardly think she's a commie either.
Why don't you just go back to pickin' cotton and chewin' tobaccy on your pappy's farm there Cletus, and leave the political debate to those of us who actually have thumbs...
but after the coup the economy was worse than under Allende for rougly 10 years and the growth began only in mid 80's after a lot of adjustements to Friedman's theory. besides you can't separate economy and the rest 3500 dead, 80 000 imprisoned 200000 fled the country
Yes, the transition from a state-run world-isolated rigged economy to one which trades with the rest of the world does entail hardship. But we live in today, not in the 'roughly 10 years after the coup'.
Actually you can separate them. Unless you are desperately trying to equate economic liberalization with torture and murder, as Klein does. Pinochet was a criminal mass-murderer. So were Mao, Stalin, Fidel, Hitler, Mussolini. Shall we write about 'shock socialism'? :-)
Well, that isn't a consequence of socialism. It's a consequence of totalitarianism. 'Shock Totalitarianism' would be a much more accurate title for your book. :-)
when will we on the left quit wining about how they're kickin our ass and start fighting back some dirty tricks of our own. political fights arent won with righteousness. Forward comrades, not one step back!
You need to know a little about economics before you can wade in on a debate like this. Does the elite want the 'prols' to learn the tricks that keep getting us fooled by the great card sharks in the sky, I don't think so. So will this ever be more than a few liberals smart enough to learn all this economic crap, only to lead a revolution? Nope, Orwell stated revolutions only exist to change the dictator of the times...
Listen people I truly understand your frustration with the way things are. However blaming something that is yet to exist will not solve your problem. The future free market is a vision, dream, hypothetical. We currently have a political economy. The current economy is full of loopholes, subsides, excessive taxation, redistribution and regulation. The real myth is labeling what we have a free market capitalistic economy. We The People must create the free market economy!

Friedman is NOT a free-market advocate. He is responsible, among other things, for the witholding tax which allows the state to get more revenue than ever before. Why are people like Naomi Klein so ignorant? Surely she must have internet access. No excuse.
And you're an expert? Professor Erik Lundberg: "A large part of Friedman's conclusions are based on his belief in the positive, built-in properties of a functioning market economy. Out of this derives his negative view of the ability of governmental authorities to intervene in market mechanisms, through financial and regulatory policies to reach full employment or prevent too large imports. Friedman also proposed a new order for the international currency system based on free exchange rates."
Yes, I am an expert. Another interesting thing about Friedman is that he was a monetarist (he renounced monetarism in the last year or two of his long life). Monetarism is yet another interventionist policy. I don't know what to tell you. The government wants to intervene so badly that they will constantly blame free echange for the problems they created. There's lots of money and power involved.
True, Friedman and supporters advocated monetarism, but only in as much as they had control of the money supply, using it to e.g. devalue currencies to control inflation. Therefore, control banks/money supply and allow "free" competition and market will be provide wealth creation for their criminal pals. How free is that? Hayek said the only freedom to do is the freedom to starve. What gets me is that these crude anarcho-capitalists are associated with Adam Smith's enlightened political economy.
what makes me most sad is this discourse is not present in our every day conversations and so few people know about the true intentions of the elites in america

Economic Shock Therapy is the brain child of Jeffery Sachs of Harvard which is hardly the bastion of the far right extremists as she paints them out to be.
With this in mind why did she willingly omit such a common knowledge fact? She is either severely uninformed or accepting information that conforms to her world view and rejecting all others in a word this is propaganda.
Friedman preceeded Sachs by decades. Sachs, who didnt earn his Phd until 1980, did not invent this notion or the terminology and had nothing to do with the Shock program of mid 1970s Chile that Naomi describes here.
I think people make a mistake by referring the Friedman, Strauss and their minions as 'neo-conservatives'. They have hijacked the 'conservative' ideology by appealing to conservatives base impulses... religion, strength thru force, 'good' vs 'evil', etc. But, they are actually neo-LIBERALS and are referred to as such by the rest of the world. It's actually the far-left one-world-ers (actually cult of elite OWNERS) who are pushing these disasterous economic, social and foreign policies.

Propaganda [from modern Latin: 'propaganda', literally "propagating"] is a concerted set of messages aimed at influencing the opinions or behavior of large numbers of people. Instead of impartially providing information, propaganda in its most basic sense presents information in order to influence its audience
The most effective propaganda is often completely truthful, but some propaganda presents facts selectively to encourage a particular synthesis, or gives loaded messages in order to produce an emotional rather than rational response to the information presented. The desired result is a change of the cognitive narrative of the subject in the target audience.
Radical privateization you mean Corporatism. Castro? So lets call Fidel Castro radical publicization or Communism. Results both Maxist, tyrannical, government (force) enduced and lead by the planks of progressive socialism.
The fruit of this memory is the likes of the Columbian rebel guerillas.
Venzuela.
Castro is still hated because he is an example of successful resistance to empire.
Refusal of heating oil for impoverished communities in the north-eastern United States from Hugo Chavez is another cruel domestic manifestation of the Free Market elites' fast and loose use of the poor for the doling of petty spankings to those who have successfully resisted.
This was a time when truck-loads of bread would bypass the ninety-nine percent and travel past the starving, through their neighbourhoods, and on up to the mansions on the hills overlooking the poor.
The only wy to get bread for the community was to stick-pu, at gunpoint the trucks as they passed through.

Another great speech by Naomi Klien. This woman is a brilliant journalist and speaker and she provides a really solid analysis of how neoliberals have consolidated economic and political power in the last thirty years through violence and totalitarianism. Yet, despite the brutality of the subject matter she's always a humorous and delightful speaker.

What double speak! The Canadian Centre of Policy Alternatives does George Orwell proud. So by "free market" Naomi really means a global monopoly market of freely traded human resources by way of rejecting liberty. Slavery is Freedom; Peace is War; Hate is Love. You know what they call people like Ms. Klein.. Useful IDIOTS - I concur.
Neither the CCPA nor Ms Klein coined the term "free market" - we all know it's a term used by neo-libs to enoble a global system of robbing the little the poor have left to make the rich richer legitimated by govts of rich nations. Hayek said "there's only one freedom and that's the freedom to starve"
They did win the battle of results Naomi. I have never heard this woman speak once about the cause of hyper inflation. Buying people off with money that doesn't exist in any real sense might be democratic but it is a dead end in every sense.
we're swiftly moving toward a global central government ANYway. and the capitalists/corporatists aren't doing the best job of playing nice with the other children...
If they can't win in a battle of ideas, they resort to terror, deathsquads, war, and brutality,. PNAC said they would,. and then they did 9/11. Wake up AMERICA! soon you will have private secruity at your door,. demanding you take a 'vacination'! Think it will be what they tell you?? If you don't learn from recent history you are bound to suffer it yourself! A boot stomping on a human face forever? will YOU Let Orwell's future come to pass? Turn OFF you TV!
@jphwacheski Yes, Milton Friedman never won the battle of ideas. The only governments in history that use terror and deathsquads are/were socialists/communists.
@jphwacheski The entrepreneur (the clever/productive caste of society) has always been in the crosshairs of tyrannical governments. This is because he or she acquires power through ability at every step of the way. A politician can be elected having only the talent to talk well. After elected he can do whatever he wishes with the fruits of others labor. Capitalism has existed since the day cavemen traded milk for meat. Wars only set back commerce and trade, they do not help it. THAT is a fact.
@martydrooo "Capitalism has existed since the day cavemen traded milk for meat. Wars only set back commerce and trade, they do not help it. THAT is a fact." So... you actually think Blackwater (XE) and KBR and Haliburton are not doing so well right now because of the invasion of Iraq. By wild coincidence you happen to be right. War does interfere with commerce and trade. But Ms. Kline is talking about capitalism as it is practiced by massive multinational corporations. Btw, Ayn Rand much?
@meamishere There are always companies that profit from wars. They are the juiced-in crony capitalists. Kings profit from wars, the merchants of the kingdoms suffer. Check out the book "Colossus" by Jack Beatty. Every US war is analyzed and it shows far more money is lost than made. If you don't like multinationals, and god knows none of us do, DONT GIVE THEM YOUR $. Its government that props up the agro-business behemoths and causes people to go hungry. Adam Smith>Naomi Klein. Rand is meh.
Nixon turning Freidman loose on Chile as a laboratory of his shock treatment...torture...Latin America. On to Thatcher's policies...1982 at 25% approval rating without any privatization. it becomes easy to see how they may suffer the same inefficiency's.

Friedman was brilliant, but to accept any ideology as totalitarian and unquestionable, and to slander another with little more argument than to dismiss it as irrational is absurd.
mouvement715 2 years ago

The unions and their supporters were highly unpopular following the 78-79 "winter of discontent", which allowed Thatcher a landslide victory. The strikers clearly did not speak for the majority of the population as Klein claims.

It's possible only in countries like Chile (pinochet) or China, Russia etc
tjaryma 3 years ago
Milton must have realized that "reforms" in Chile could not have been possible in a democratic country only in countries like Russia or China it is possible to introduce full dystopia in Friedman's style. This kind of economy (and this is a kind of economy not the only one) that needs a clean, blank slate.

Wow this woman talks about the miners strikes, my Dad was in that strike 1984 i was a year old about my mum and dad still talk about it, they could hardly feed us, the community pulled together tho people would give my parents trolleys full of food, my dad and his brothers would nick coal from near the pit and sell it on or keep for our own uses ( we had coal fires up until about 96 i think ) my dad was proud to be on strike I still dont fully understand what it was about.

but after the coup the economy was worse than under Allende for rougly 10 years and the growth began only in mid 80's after a lot of adjustements to Friedman's theory. besides you can't separate economy and the rest 3500 dead, 80 000 imprisoned 200000 fled the country
tjaryma 3 years ago
Yes, the transition from a state-run world-isolated rigged economy to one which trades with the rest of the world does entail hardship. But we live in today, not in the 'roughly 10 years after the coup'.
Actually you can separate them. Unless you are desperately trying to equate economic liberalization with torture and murder, as Klein does. Pinochet was a criminal mass-murderer. So were Mao, Stalin, Fidel, Hitler, Mussolini. Shall we write about 'shock socialism'? :-)
marcoantoniocosta 3 years ago
Well, that isn't a consequence of socialism. It's a consequence of totalitarianism. 'Shock Totalitarianism' would be a much more accurate title for your book. :-)

No excuse.
robotron17 4 years ago
And you're an expert? Professor Erik Lundberg: "A large part of Friedman's conclusions are based on his belief in the positive, built-in properties of a functioning market economy. Out of this derives his negative view of the ability of governmental authorities to intervene in market mechanisms, through financial and regulatory policies to reach full employment or prevent too large imports. Friedman also proposed a new order for the international currency system based on free exchange rates."
sbor2020 4 years ago
Yes, I am an expert. Another interesting thing about Friedman is that he was a monetarist (he renounced monetarism in the last year or two of his long life). Monetarism is yet another interventionist policy. I don't know what to tell you. The government wants to intervene so badly that they will constantly blame free echange for the problems they created. There's lots of money and power involved.
robotron17 4 years ago
True, Friedman and supporters advocated monetarism, but only in as much as they had control of the money supply, using it to e.g. devalue currencies to control inflation. Therefore, control banks/money supply and allow "free" competition and market will be provide wealth creation for their criminal pals. How free is that? Hayek said the only freedom to do is the freedom to starve. What gets me is that these crude anarcho-capitalists are associated with Adam Smith's enlightened political economy.

Economic Shock Therapy is the brain child of Jeffery Sachs of Harvard which is hardly the bastion of the far right extremists as she paints them out to be.
With this in mind why did she willingly omit such a common knowledge fact? She is either severely uninformed or accepting information that conforms to her world view and rejecting all others in a word this is propaganda.
davidmesaaz 4 years ago
Friedman preceeded Sachs by decades. Sachs, who didnt earn his Phd until 1980, did not invent this notion or the terminology and had nothing to do with the Shock program of mid 1970s Chile that Naomi describes here.
Sachs was 19 years old in 1973.

Instead of impartially providing information, propaganda in its most basic sense presents information in order to influence its audience
davidmesaaz 4 years ago
The most effective propaganda is often completely truthful, but some propaganda presents facts selectively to encourage a particular synthesis, or gives loaded messages in order to produce an emotional rather than rational response to the information presented. The desired result is a change of the cognitive narrative of the subject in the target audience.
davidmesaaz 4 years ago
In other words, it makes no difference at all what she says because, in your view, she is already wrong before she begins with the facts.
