  • Sales tax is also high because the town you might live in has low revenue.

They have to make up the loss, of too many people getting on food stamps to pay for fixes they can't other wise. How many times had your Governor called for a state of emergency, because your town has no money? Getting rid of sales tax kills small towns, it's about their only income!!!!!

  • atop eating crap and read the bloody labels to see what toxins you are ingesting..

this will be good if it stops people eating crap..

  • @ToJ01978 You're a moron. Did you even watch this video? You mean the FAIRTAX people, different group...in fact, almost the opposite of this group. You want: fairtax.org. Also, "junk food and fast food" is NOT considered FOOD by law so is NOT what this is talking about. Your panties are in a wad at the wrong people. Get a clue!

  • Lastly, I am sorry that you have such a negative impression of the citizens of the United States. I think it is unfair that you would paint us all with the same brush. Watching Fox “News” or other such media outlets may have given you the impression that you seem to have of us, however, I assure you that we are NOT all the same and are greatly divided in this country on a lot of issues.

  • Perhaps you have us confused with the “Fair Tax” folks, which is a national group and are essentially the opposite of us.

  • I lived in KY when they stopped taxing food. That was years ago. TN is way behind the times. This video is not about junk food...it's about paying HIGH TAX on a source that sustains life. Take a family of 5 or more, that making $20,000 a year....a large portion of their money goes to feed their family and another large portion goes to food tax. TN IS INSANE. Plus, TN is LOSING in many ways. I shop online more than offline at tax free sites!

  • Oh man, I needed this laugh

  • taxes are part of this country. If you can afford junk food you can afford taxes.

  • Also, may I ask the person that posted this trash, who signs your paycheque?? I am willing to bet a person that works for a coalition or some other bullshit operation that could care less about the health and well being of it's customers as long as the money is rolling right in.

Reminds me of the cigarette companies when they didn't want to say what was actually in cigarettes or, here in Canada, when the gov't taxed the hell out of smokes to pay for the future healthcare of smokers.

  • Retarded commercial.

Go ahead, don't tax junk food as we all know US parents make the best decisions for their kids. That's why obesity is not a problem, right?

Telling people to eat healthy and educating them on why they should be cannnot possibly compete with TV for your childrens wants and desires. As for the poor people comment, McDonalds offers burgers for 89c that you all eat up and will continue to so get the fuck over it, the poor will still be poor, just maybe they will live longer.

  • @ToJ01978 We appreciate your passion and your comments (sans the foul language). However, it seems that there is some misunderstanding about the point of this video. We apologize if it is unclear. The point is not about junk food at all (which is taxed at a the general sales tax rate in Tennessee- highest in country and not considered food), the point is that all other food (I.E. vegetables, bread and milk) is taxed at all.

  • @taxfairness,

Why take the point of all food taxes are wrong?? The fact is you are all too uninformed and have no willpower (hence the obesity of your nation) so these decisions will just be made for you as you cannot be left to make your own properly.

Also, please stop complaining about taxes and the big bad government. I pay more taxes and higher shipping cost because I live in Canada yet we have a smaller % of poor. Go figure that one out.

Also, again, who signs your paycheque??

  • The state of Tennessee has the 3rd highest sales tax on food in the U.S. and the highest general sales tax. We, Tennesseans for Fair Taxation (a non profit, not a corporation) assert that such high sales taxes are regressive which means that we are concerned with revenue and justice.

  • @taxfairness,

Also, as I pointed out, I pay higher taxes than you do down south yet we have a better educational system, low crime (hence we do not have to spend as much on police per capita), less people in prison (ditto for the last comment) and live longer while supporting a universal healthcare program for everyone.

Tax on food is not your problem, quite frankly you are a citizen of a selfish nation that would not pay an extra cent in taxes to help one another. That is your real problem.

  • Comment removed

  • @ToJ01978Again, we appreciate your comments, but again, it seems you have misunderstood our message. We are talking about just the state of Tennessee, which has a regressive taxation system. This means that those that are at the bottom of the financial ladder pay more as a percentage of their income than those at the top in Tennessee.

  • @greenfistnine,

I do not misunderstand this issue at all. Fact is every single commercial put on TV about this starts with "Get government out of your wallet/house/whatever" so it is quite obvious that your reason for being upset about this is only half the story.

Again, may I ask you, who signs your paycheque????

Also, may I add that food taxes on junk food and fast food should be mandatory. Per my comment earlier, you people are simply not responsible enough to take care of yourselves.

  • The problem with this is that our state does not raise enough money to afford better schools, health care, infrastructure and important social institutions. We want to change that. We want revenue with justice for all.

  • As far as the country as a whole, we AGREE that we can do better. While we can’t speak for everyone, at least half of U.S. citizens would like to see a universal healthcare system like the one that your country enjoys and would be willing to pay for it with higher taxes. However, that is a larger issue that we (TFT) can’t affect.

  • You are right, the U.S. does, on the whole pay far less in taxes than most other industrialized nations and we are suffering the consequences with poor less than ideal situations in a lot of areas that you mentioned like education, safety, etc. In fact I think that we could agree on a great many things, but you are barking up the wrong tree by using our (TFT’s) video as an example.

  • We need enough revenue in our state to provide proper schools, police protection, roads and other services that help our state and it's people prosper and these high taxes force people to buy their essentials in other states. We assert that this is an issue of justice as these taxes unfairly burden the least prosperous and benefit the most prosperous.

  • Why in hell would you tax food are you serious? Taxes destroy the economy raising the price on food would make it harder for the poor to eat,

  • @theabomation That's the point we are trying to make. No taxes on food. Glad that you agree. ;)

  • I almost could not believe why aren't people rioting over this?@taxfairness

  • Take the tax off of food! Great video!
