I'm sorry, but no. You can't compare what these WWI men went through with what US/Western troops are going through in places like Afghanistan today.
Ironically, the Afghans themselves are probably going through an experience closer to WWI than Western troops.

WW1 will always be remembered as the clash of the titans. National pride and other emotions took control. But my guess is most men wanted to war to end right after 1915. They were promised that this was going to be a short war. Not something that would take 11 million lives world wide.

This 'War to end ALL Wars' was the first fully industrialised and mechanised war, where man was TRULY cannon fodder. Just read a book about the roll played by famous writers/poets of the day-ie. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle ( Sherlock Holmes), who played a despicable part in the Propaganda of the British war effort, who willingly lied to the public on a gigantic scale, by saying it was all a joyride, we were winning every battle, and casualties were always only slight. Shellshock is the same phenomenon as PTSD, just a different name. Back then they also called it 'cowardice' - a complete misnomer because we now know what they went through. Respect to them all.
It's not just about gore and seeing nasty things - otherwise people would get it just from looking at things on the Internet.
The threat of a random, unpredictable and violent death of yourself or the man next to you, every single day for 4 years would send most people quite mad. And it did.

Back then, war was ALWAYS a mistake, it might had some great benefits,but after all,it's still a mistake. People really HAD some serious mind illness due the horrors they have seen. These days,some invasion of Afghanistan really doesn't have that kind of horrors. Starting a war like that really isn't a mistake anymore. It has too many benefits. Personally I'm THAT fucking psycho I think I really wouldn't get any disorders even if I had to kill a fucking village full of civilians. Thats kinda sad

Also, plenty of these young men I'm sure were gung-ho when they went off to war as well, but reality snapped them out of it. It certainly seems to have been the case with many US troops in Vietnam.

I was watching a movie on WW1, and just before the soldiers were about to jump out of the trenches and move forward.. wow, I was feeling scared for the actors, terrifying for those people just watching a reenactment. If I ever see war veterans I really give them so much respect because I don't think I'd be able to do something like they did. Just watching it is horrifying.

Not a surprise - there is only so much the human mind can take. Seeing people blown to pieces all around you; dying the most dreadful deaths. That's only going to have affected them for later. Most of them were soooo young. What they did for us was unbelievable and the ultimate sacrifice. We can only thank them - that doesn't ever seem enough.

I'm sorry, but no. You can't compare what these WWI men went through with what US/Western troops are going through in places like Afghanistan today.
Ironically, the Afghans themselves are probably going through an experience closer to WWI than Western troops.

WW1 will always be remembered as the clash of the titans. National pride and other emotions took control. But my guess is most men wanted to war to end right after 1915. They were promised that this was going to be a short war. Not something that would take 11 million lives world wide.
