Even though I respect their personal need for faith I don't quite understand why they would choose to follow a religion that encourages oppression of homosexuals and undermines their self worth. Ultimately it isn't necessary for me to understand, but trying to balance both seems to be a major source of pain for them.

When you read the bible, and it says homosexuality is a sin. Does it ever specifically say the homosexual is an abomination? No, it clearly describes the sex as a sin. "You are not to lay with another man, as you would a woman". Essentially saying "Just don't have sex then". If it were to say something like "Demi-sexuality is a sin" well it's speaking about my sexuality, the type of sex i have. Not me. A person is not defined by their sexuality, gay christians get this concept pretty easily.

Religious efforts must fight for the humanity that Jesus, the New Testament, and other sacred texts hope to teach its believers. As Helminiak and Brawley have shown, literalism is a way by which individuals are disconnected from reality and globalization, and thus literalists stay blind to the world around them because of their fear of change.
To contradict humanity, by adhering to text literally, is a way to stay blind and ignorant to the change around an individual. Times change, and so should the interpretations of sacred texts, but humanity itself does not change, it remains flawed, complex, diverse, and passionate, and in that lies its divinity.

@shinobi1kenobi75 well seeing as both animals and young teens aren't considered able to give consent to sex under the law, those are irrelevant. Plus Sodomy is only banned in 13 states (not that I've heard of anyone being charged for it anyway) otherwise its legal all throughout north american and I believe in most of Europe as well, so the Sodomy illegality is quickly fading away making your arguments invalid for the most part.

@shinobi1kenobi75 I personally draw the line at consent. Sex with animals is rape or, at best, exploitation. Sex with young teens is actually perfectly normal behavior, or at least it use to be. In fact, Mary was approximately 14 when she married 30 to 40 year-old Joseph. The only reason why the age of consent is 18 is because at that age a person is finished with their basic schooling and officially "on their own" as far as the government is concerned.

When you read the bible, and it says homosexuality is a sin. Does it ever specifically say the homosexual is an abomination? No, it clearly describes the sex as a sin. "You are not to lay with another man, as you would a woman". Essentially saying "Just don't have sex then". If it were to say something like "Demi-sexuality is a sin" well it's speaking about my sexuality, the type of sex i have. Not me. A person is not defined by their sexuality, gay christians get this concept pretty easily.
