Saw his show in Salt Lake City a few days ago. Quartet was John, brother Martin on bass, Larry Fuller on piano and Tony Tedesco on drums. All great jazz musicians. John is a jazz virtuoso and entertaining front man. If you get a chance to see him, don't miss it.
@gesmjs Saw his show last night at Ramapo College in New Jersey with the same personnel as in Salt Lake City, the crowd loved him he is also a funny guy, tells some great stories.
Memories... I remember seeing John Pizzarelli in the mid/early 2005 or something, when I was a music student at OttawaU. I believe I got free tickets at to the National Arts Centre. Indeed Abodao is correct!! A great show. Inspiring! In fact shortly afterwards I became a member of Ottawa Swing Dance Society (OSDS), and dance to this! That would be a fantasy come true if John could do a show with some social swing dance, east cost, lindy, jive, west coast, etc.... when he comes back to Ottawa.
To celebrate the release of my new album, Rockin' In Rhythm: A Tribute To Duke Ellington, Telarc International is giving away a complimentary two-night stay at the Carlyle Hotel, two tickets to my performance, dinner for two and a travel voucher!
America --I have a serious question for you: What (the F***) is WRONG with you??? You CAN'T say anything positive about anything? About, say, "How GOOD this guy John P. is. About his utter mastery of his instrument? Etc." It's Not Bird! It's Not Bluegrass. Not This; not That. This is all TOXIC Crap. Why do you do it? Hey --HERE's a guitar; here's YouTube; only one thing missing --you! OK, take 10 yrs --20, 30, 50 yrs. Come back then --I'll listen to you; I promise to say something positive.
I called for this song at a jam session and was stared at like I buggered the Christmas goose. If you can't play at least three good choruses on this song AND Cherokee, you are NOT a jazz musician. Bluegrass? On which planet?
I get that look all the time when I call "standards." Honestly, a lot of it just has to do with the fact that most people are interested in playing bop and really don't know a lot of standards. I don't even bother with Cherokee because everyone wants to take it at 300 when it's not really necessary.
Yeah, these songs will survive forever. Cant say that of the immeadiately forgettable trash on the radio today...and that covers the whole spectrum of rap, rock, pop, country...all of it....long live jazz standards written and performed with real talent by people with real brains.
You obviously don't understand great music. Just because it only has a few chords and is old doesn't mean it isn't great. Most of what John plays has more chords than rock stuff anyway (and I play Jazz and Rock so I'm being particularly fair)
He sings on pitch, while he vamps into and out of chord changes, his rhythm, comps and leads are never sloppy and he's as good live and he is recorded. It's not fair that he can play and sing and do it all on a 7 string. One of the best.
I'm gonna have to say I'm spot on w/ ur envy. But u know, it's great to know that the Jazz world has a true gem when it comes to an artist who can sing as good as he plays.
John grimaces as if those solos are difficult for him but they probably are'nt.

Well, i wouldn't go as far as to say that your not a jazz musician if you don't know 2 songs but great jazz musicians can play any tune they hear.

Not wanting to fight, but not all rock is poor in chord progression.
Prog Rock such as Rush has awesome kickass songwriting with a lot of progression and complexity.
And yeah, Jazz is awesome too.
I like this song, Avalon.
