  • It's ok guys, you can wait until someone like Dale Earnhardt get killed then make safety measures. It's not like you waited until 10+ drivers died in 5-7 years, that's real smart nascar, real smart.

  • Sadly, Earnhardt would die in the same corner 7 years later. RIP Earnhardt and Bonnett.

  • 777garyow--

Tragedy, indeed; in fact, I personally believe that this, at least at the time, was the biggest wake-up call to NASCAR drivers that they needed to learn to settle down and learn to race without sending each other into the wall, flying through the grass, etc., and start respecting each other, as Rusty Wallace would point out himself on the day of the Daytona 500 some ten days later.

  • 1986Sheri--

He would have turned 65 yesterday had he still been alive.

  • Joshd0102--

I totally concur with you on that. After his accident at Darlington approximately 3 1/2 years earlier, the doctors said that he had no business getting in a race car and driving again; yet, by July of 1993, when Neil got ready to race again at Talladega, he had apparently gained clearance from the doctors to do so.

  • Bonnet shouldn't have been out there anyways

  • how old would've Neil Bonnet have been if he was still alive?

  • turn 4=worse spot to crash in RIP turn 4 drivers

  • i'm not a neil bonnett fan but r.i.p neil we all miss you

  • Dale Earnhardt and Neil Bonnett were close friends and died at the same track

  • Thejoey20rocks--

    1994.

  • R.I.P You all guys for died in driving. And remember. Believe your dad if it says dont ever drive formula, motorbike or nascar cars ;`D

  • PhilipTheBigOne--

Tragic indeed; yet, it took almost ten years for NASCAR to finally catch up and make safety improvements for drivers mandatory.

  • @TheJoey20rocks: I count more fatallities in '94, plus Senna was the Dale Earnhardt of Formula 1. So it was a HORRIBLE year for racing!!!

  • @TheJoey20rocks: 1994. A few days later, Rodney Orr crashed and died. 2 and a half months later, Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna died in the F1 Imola GP. And then in Michigan, Ernie Irvan nearly lost his life too!!!

Boy was 1994 a tragic year!!!

  • MrPingPongSr--

No; in fact, he walked away from the Talladega crash unhurt, just a little scared s--tless from the accident, knowing that he could have had a repeat of what had happened to him at Darlington just three years earlier.

  • Was he still injured from the crash at Talladega the year before?

  • @MrPingPongSr he wasn't injured in that crash. He walked away fine from that.

  • jonesy97--

Alan Kulwicki (Plane crash outside of Bristol, TN), and Davey Allison (Helicopter crash while attempting to land in garage area at Talladega Superspeedway); both Kulwicki (April 1993) and Allison's (July 1993) deaths were just three months apart from each other. So, yes; Davey Allison was one of them.

  • to those that dont know there is only so much you can do for safety nascar has done a ton to protect their drivers and fans

  • Who were the other two mentioned in that 10 month period? Was Davey Allison one of them?

  • isn't ironic that Neil and dale died in the same turn

  • nascar should do better then this like mcdowells flip it could have killed him kevin lepage 2010 talledega almost killed him atlanta 2010 brad k flips almost kills the kid nascar do something

  • @crazysheltons elliot saddlers crash at pocono too

  • just about the same place Sr lost his life and they were best friends....gives me chills just thinking about it

  • he was only 47?!

  • A basilar skull fracture is when the back of the head is cracked open or something.

  • A basilar skull fracture is when the opening at the base of the skul is fractured(ring fracture) and results in the brain stem basically being cut in half.

  • Amazing how much misinformation there is on this subject. 1) It was David Bonnet, Neil's son, who pulled Davey from the wreck of his helicopter. 2) Neil had had a crash previously where he had a severe concussion, from which he never fully recovered. When he came back, his reaction time was slower. In 1994, Hans devices, were not required by NASCAR and there were no safe barriers. His crash was at an angle where the entire force came through the driver's compartment.

  • Sounds like we have lots of "Dumbasses" posting here

  • I agree.

  • Was Neil wearing an open face or full face helmet when the crash happened????? I've heard different stories about the crash, but my opinion is that the Hoosier tires were the culprit. I remember at one time the rumor was he had a dizzy spell and lost it....then some bar stool critics claimed he unbuckled the belts and crashed intentionally......BUT I THINK IT WAS ALL A BUNCH OF BULL. He shouldn't have been back in a car, but fate played the part and he died due to a tire failure, not driver error

  • hey i believe your the dumbass they did have the hans back then it was invented in the 80's do your research. i own a hans it tells you about it in some of the pamplets it comes with.

  • The HANS was invented in 1999 i think. It was optional in 2001 but it became a rule to wear it after earnhardts crash

  • @TheMatt605 WHAT!?!?!?!? The Hans was invented in the early 80's. Second statement is correct though.

  • HANS developed starting in '85, crash tested in '89, available in '91

  • @VooDooRocketry and this in "95"

  • @wcwfan33412 this was in 1994

  • @ZUFALL2938 in the movie "3" it was in 95 o well

  • @VooDooRocketry mandated in 2002-03

  • Hey dumbass they didnt have a hans in 1992..

  • was that the country time car

yes I know it is not the point but I am just asking

  • Yes it was

  • i absolutly love nascar..i like it for the close racing and exciting finishes but i always hope no one gets hurt...i hate seeing people get hurt..like a few weeks ago at talladega when carl edwards went up into the catch fence..i dont like edwards but i was very glad he was able to walk away from it

  • I hate when they put the tarps over the cars like that.

  • me 2 it makes it more dramatic then

    it should be

  • Neil was another brilliant NASCAR driver that was taken from the world much too soon. Its always the good ones that they take isnt it. '94 was a shit year for racing... Thats all I can say. RIP Neil... Your fans still miss you.

  • 15 years ago today

  • It happens, I mean do you really think even 50% of racing fans watch it because of speed? I'm a racing fan, I didnt watch this video cause I missed the news that day.

  • yeah like dale earnhardt he said it was for wimps. after saying that he crashed and died

  • if they only made the hans device earlier this wouldnt of happened

  • it had been around for 15 years before that crash. people were just too goddamn stubborn and stupid.

  • wow 3rd time in 10 months

    tragaty

  • The early 90s was a very bad time for race car drivers.

  • 94 for ALL motorsports. F1 and NASCAR especially.

  • yup 1st alan kulwicki (a hooter's corporate plane crashed near bristol on his way back from an appearance at a hooter's in knoxville) on april 1st 1993 then davey allison (crashed his helicopter in the talladega infield attempting an inexperienced downwind landing in a fenced in area) neil bonnet and red farmer were onboard and survived on july 13th 1993 exactly 9 months earlier davey's brother clifford was killed on august 13th 1992 in turns 3&4 at michigan practicing for the busch series race

  • Neil Bonnett was not on board. He pulled Red Farmer and Davey Allison out of the wreckage however. Davey and Red were flying in to help Neil's son David with his race car.

  • Neil Bonnett was NOT on board the helicopter when it crashed with Davey Allison and Red Farmer. Neil's son David was on the scene and pulled Davey out. And yes Clifford was killed in Michigan during Busch practice but I believe in this news report they are talking about Rodney Orr, who you failed to mention, who was also killed at Daytona this same year.

  • @777garyow: The other 2 were not on the race track. Alan Kulwicki on April 1st, 1993 and Davey Allison in July '93 died in plane crashes. Alan approaching Bristol, Tennessee (I spelled it wrong, I know), Davey while landing at Talladega, Alabama.

  • @777garyow go back to school and learn how to spell you fucking retard

  • Super guy. On and off the track. He loved the fans, but most of all, he loved making the fans happy. RIP.

  • channel 6 news? The one out of Tallahassee? Sounds like the same guy.

  • Bonnet was a good guy.He was a TV commentator, and a commercial pitchman for RESTORE engine additive. He had a lot going for him.Maybe he should have retired early and went with the TV gigs he was getting.

  • 18 victories id be happy with that

  • Hell, Neil Bonnet wouldn't be happy with 100 wins. There was one thing he cared about and that was being number 1. Neil was a great driver...

  • I dont't get it. With Neil's accident and many others who cost lives Nascar didn't learn until Dale's death. If Nascar would have taken the initiative like they did after Dales's death to make the cars safer Dale might still be alive. I mean Nascar has done a great job since Dalek's death but it took a major figure in the sport to open up Nascar's eyes.

  • Actually when a car touches the apron the car bottoms out and what does a car do when it bottoms out it wants to go the opposite direction that it was going when it bottoms out. Rest In Peace Neil We miss you along with Dale have fun fishin for those golden bass in heaven boys I will be there soon on your boat.

  • No, actually, the sudden change in angle the tires experience when they hit the apron compresses the left front shock. If the car is set up for this it is fine, but if not, the shock rebounds quickly, causing the car to shoot up the track. The more drastic the difference in angle between the racing surface and the apron, the more likely this is to occur.

  • man its a mess at the bottom of the comment page lol

  • they shoot up when they hit the apron because they get loose or the wheels spin when becuase the tires are at a different angle than the other tires meaning it would be inbalanced or something

  • can u please take ur bashing some where

    else

  • i believe he had 2 other major crashes before this

  • rip

  • Then fuck you. Go away and leave us NASCAR fans alone.

  • you are an idiot you must respect all the fans of nascar

  • What I want to know is why you come on a NASCAR video, one in which a man loses his life, and then insult NASCAR, which includes all the drivers, all the fans, and all of the people associated with it. Okay, you don't like NASCAR. Understandable. Lots of people don't. I do, though. And you just randomly insult us. Someone needs to beat you with a stick.

  • That was a tremendous hit. Im not sure how he crashed like that in a practice session. He will be sadly missed for years to come.

  • He was in Turn 3 and 4 and his two left tires touched the apron and for reasons still unknown, it made his car shoot up the banking and head-on into the wall. You'd think with all the physics and everything in NASCAR they would come up with an asnwer for why the cars shoot u the track like that when they hit the apron. RIP Neil

  • They have explained it countless times.... When the cars bottom out they are heading toward the infield but right when the car bottoms out it shoots the car in the opposite direction of which it came, and in this case Neil was turning the wheel left and it made the impact that much harder because it made the car shoot up the track in a straight line hitting head on with the wall.

    R.I.P. Neil

  • damn, this sucks. R.I.P. Neil Bonnett, R.I.P.

  • rip

  • rip

  • R.I.P. Bonnet, R.I.P.
