  • This is such a powerful song.

  • why is it men and women and not mens and womens ?

  • @camcmouA The singular word is man & woman, and the plural is men and women, therefore "mens" and "womens" do not exist.

  • @mingewell Aaah okay you learnt me something thank u :)

  • @camcmouA My pleasure :)

  • @camcmouA Because people study in school l0l

  • @Artegr4 I'm french :)

  • @camcmouA I'm just kidding lol, one is man/woman , 2 and more are men/women, see the difference now

  • @Artegr4 Yes ^_^ are you american ?

  • @camcmouA No I'm from Latvia (it's also called Lettland in some places) I speak Latvian, Russian, English, but I'd love to learn French in future

  • @Artegr4 Waoo and I'd love to speak Russian !

  • @camcmouA Good thing about Russian is only that we actually have a lot of interesting artworks (I mean literature). This Musical touches my heart very hard, because I don't understand what they are singing, but I understand the plot of it and it makes me understand feeling that they show, because of that , for me, they are speaking on language of love

  • @Artegr4 ohhh so beautiful ^^ I love this musical because I've seen it like 200 times when I was young and it makes me remember my childhood :p but now I understand a lot of things more and I realize that this is a beeaaautiful musical !

  • tellement triste !

  • Still seems funny that it's Frollo himself who let the right of sanctuary be violated like that. If I recall correctly, in the book, while the court of miracle are making the siege of N-D to free Esmeralda, he precisely sneak inside with Gringoire to "save" her (well, still with the "price", which she doesn't want to pay,... If it was me I think I'd totally accept, I'd rather sleep with some frustrated guy than getting hanged, but hey, that's just me.)

  • I´D LIKE THE SPANISH TRANSLATION.. But thanks for the video.. is absolutly wonderful!.. the best thing that i`ve ever seen !!

  • I can't get over the beauty of the music in this masterpiece...I get shivers after every song

  • I just LOVE when Bruno starts to sing, EPICNESS ♥♪

  • Wow. They really played up the social commentary aspect of this! That was chilling and a perfect foil to the epicness of Liberes.

But how could they kill off Clopin?! He comes across as such a noble character in the play!

  • @Amy3422 Also Luck Mervil gives hope with his voice!

  • @Amy3422 Well in the book, he is alot more ambigous. He's not as noble as he appears in the musical.

  • @EmilyGreene1984 I know! That's probably why the play kills him. No one would care otherwise . . . I don't really know which version I prefer. Unfortunately, I picture the book Clopin as looking kind of like the cartoon, which maybe messes up my view of him . . .

  • So FUCking EPIC

  • In this part of the book Clopin starts cutting the legs off of the archers horses with a giant scythe... no really.

  • does anyone know what song this is called? like the tittle?

  • @xanaxox

L'attaque de Notre-Dame (The Attack of ND)

  • Um.. i am pretty sure when they are saying "asile" the translation is actually supposed to be more like refuge, not asylum...

  • @wuud95 Perhaps, but oftentimes when translating one language into another liberties are taken to portray a smoother and more "fitting" meaning. I believe they chose "asylum" instead, because they are asking for refuge within the Cathedral. Such refuge is referred to officially as "asylum." Besides, this is the translation from the official DVD so...it's sorta stuck that way anyhow.

  • @Aimingforcute Is this really the official translation? Surely they could have done a better job...

    a 3 minute 10 magnifique

  • I wish I had the chance to watch it live... it's just soooo goood!

  • je t'aime gregoire:)

  • This song is prob the most intense song in the whole play. I love it

  • wonderful

  • I still can't decide if this play is xenophobic or xenophylic. Some songs point out how foreign cultures can enrich our own, others (like this one) -how troublesome culture mix can be.

As to me, I think that "asylum" in this song, looking at current situation in Europe, means that money government spends on unemployed foreigners. While this can be nice and helpful for those, who came to France\Germany to actually work and study, but it also attracts not wishing to work ppl, who cause problems.

  • I wish I was there! :(

  • @saralovesautumn

    I wish too :(((

  • Oh God I can't watch when they kill Clopin... they... bastards T______T I love this show

  • I love how when the Des Sans-Papier theme comes up the first time, it sounds like just Clopin at first, then the chorus comes in...all the while, his voice stands out. After his death, it sounds like just the chorus at first, then Esmeralda's voice 'joins in,' but it isn't quite as powerfully overwhelming as her brothers....she's just too shocked to summon that kind of power....

  • absolument magnifique quand gregoire rejoint la troupe

  • I'm know Francian!

  • OMG! This song is so powerful! It made my heart pound and I cold even feel tears well up in my eyes. Amazing performance!

I actually think that Helene Segara is much more passionate and her acting is much better in act 2, though she's brilliant in act 1 also! LOVE this musical! LOVE this version! LOVE all the performances! PERFECTION is the word that comes to mind.

  • @hohorek maybe you have never seen the italian version..

    it is better!!!

  • I love this musical, everyone was amazing so passionate and emotional but clopin..do you need an inhaler twoards your death? That was just pushing it a little...

  • The best moment for me is: 3:09 . I like this musical.

  • *faints* i could hear my heart snap in two.

    fabulous

    heartbreaking

  • Gringoire in this song has the most epic appearance I have ever seen. Great song, great musical!

  • Clopin's best songs are his first and last

  • 3:58

    It's like an epic showdown(:

  • anyone else find clopins dying face rather amusing? :L

  • one of my favorite songs

  • i love this song ...

i love all the different voices singing different things (like phoebus).. it all sounds sooo good <3

  • the guards beat him up.

  • I love abosolutely everything about this musical!!!!

except... maybe Phoebus's costume shoulda been more charismatic.

    minor complaint, nonetheless:-P

  • I agree, maybe something a bit more flashy then a mere chainmail would have been nice :P...

But yeah it's like such a litte detail in this work of art *-*

  • Did clopin died in a book? I dont remember that he did.

  • he did die in the novel he's cut down by a man on horse back when he starts attacking Parisan guards with a Sythe or something....This musical just makes his death slightly more dramatic

  • @lienja : Yeah, they mention it very briefly. "It was Chopin Trouillefou. A shot from an arquebus laid him low."

  • @Paddyeahh : ...Clopin...

  • @lienja

yes, he did, during the battle for Esmeralda in front of Notre Dame. i remember that Phoebus shot him.

  • Clopin est magnifique :D but... Esmeralda... well... your "big brother" is dying, the man who had cared for you, as a father and... and you don't cry, you don't... you don't do anything!! Where is your desperation? it looks like nothing is happened...

  • can you please check the link, this video doesn't play

  • febo sembra una scimmia !!! meglio graziano

  • cette chanson est magnifique!!!! ca retrace bien tout le spectacle!!!!! french version is the best for me and our Frollo (Daniel Lavoie) is more better than italian, russian or korean!!!! excuse me for my bad english!!!

  • I see your pount, but still... she is not chokink him and neither is he set on fire...

  • Worst death ever... That was the most pathetic attempt of a death I have ever seen...

  • True that. But it's a play, so they have to make it overdramatic. Remember it's being preformed live, and most people don't have a good a view as we do watching the film version ;D

  • I think that Clopin, Esmeralda and Quasi are the characters who are the most humans in this musical

  • @Calypsogodness and i think that Gringoire seems pretty human. the others, yeah...

  • Gringoire doesn't do when Esmeralda is hang and she saves his life, so he's not the most nice

  • @Calypsogodness And they all die in the end. I think it was an author"s idea as a critique of our cruel world. Mary Theresa said that people needed kindness but they returned evil for good.

  • wow! great song

    i love it!!!

  • does anyone know another musical this beautiful ?

  • Try Romeo et Juliette it is great too

  • not as great !!

  • Comment removed

  • listen to le roi soleil or don juan

    i love these comédie musicales

    or mozart l'opéra rock

    great too

  • NO ! =)

  • I was so annoyed they didn't add the last half to the English soundtrack, it's so beautiful!

  • Wait, they did, I'm so happy!

  • On les passe au Kärcher... >__>

  • helene has a wonderful voice, but she is not an actress...I mean, in this scene she should show a bit of anger, at least!

Seems like she has not strong emotions!

  • She's not showing anger because she's portraying a more desperate and sad emotion. If you look at her face she's like a zombie, stunned from Clopin's death. I'd be stunned too if I were her. She's desperate and is asking for help. Her hand gestures makes it looks like she's praying, which is appropriate with the lyrics.

Sometimes emotions doesn't have to be so black-and-white like anger.

  • I don't think emotions are black or white, I only think that since clopin has asked her to guide their people now that he's dead, she should show most strenght : in my opinion Esmeralda is strong and free like clopin, and in this particular part the actress should show this... I just say that anger wuold be my reaction, and, in my opinion, even Esmeralda's, expecially in this part where the music is in a crescendo and a angry reaction would follow it better!

    Sorry for my english :)

  • In my opinion, Esmeralda is weak, it fits her voice better. And the contrast with her voice and Gringoire's just gives me chills. And what can she do? She's just a 16-year-old girl. She can't fight against a bunch of soldiers? That's why the story ended the way it did. And she did show strength by swallowing her tears and tries to keep going. But that's my opinion. However, I would say it is untrue that she's has not strong emotions. She just showed it in a different way.

  • You're right, she's young, and she can't do much to help the strangers or save herself, but anyway I can't stop thinking that this is a climax moment and need more strenght...reading yur comments I had to agree that eventhe way helene Play this part is correct, but I prefer Lola Ponce's version, because is nearer to the way I see the character...

It's been a pleasure to confront with you, anyway!

  • yeah, i would think she was in shock, i mean they killed her protector

  • @zxVampxz true, but i feel like with her they're not understated or implied... they're just absent. it's like she didn't know how to act out extreme sadness or rage so she stuck a blank expression on her face and hoped that it worked out. helene has a good voice, but, sorry, her acting just doesn't compare to that of the other members of her cast.

julie zenatti was plenty subtle in her take on fleur-de-lys, but she was still extremely powerful, for example.

  • @MagicalFenfen Really? I thought Fluer-de-Lys was the worst actress in the whole thing (still amazing but yah). The blank look really works. If you think about it, she's upset, but she knows she has to carry on what he was trying for. And she shows a angry sass when she starts singing at Pheobus. Her rage builds as the song goes which is an excellent expression as she is moving from shock to anger (which is the general course) and by the end it reached sadness.

  • I just LOVE how the jumps around with those fences! I lookes so marvelous!

  • I'm a bit of a music geek, I guess, but as someone who is about to go to college to study music composition, I was really impressed by the music throughout the show.

Reusing themes/melodies throughout the play is common, I know, but I got chills just thinking of the fact that the same melody used at beginning to introduce a character in all of his liveliness was also used in the scene of his death.

  • Hah, and now that I think about it, the same song for intro/death idea is all over too (LotR, Beauty and the Beast, etc.), but it still has a pretty powerful effect on me.

  • You missed Deportés...

  • this scene gives me goosebumps especially when their voices were overlapping with each other...

  • the best scene i'd seen so far.

  • oh my god! they killed clopin!

    THOSE BASTARDS!!!

sorry, it just seemed right for the moment.

that was a really intense performance

  • One of the most epic scenes in musical... this is just so amazing...

  • I love the parts where Esmeralda yells her whole lungs and voice out, yet no one really hears her over others :D

  • Clopin was changed for the leader of the political refugees, medieval Che. The lyrics is too repetitive and unsophisticated, but it is one of my favoriest songs in the musical :)

  • that was so good i have goosebumps! O.O

  • ah whats wrong with you :(

  • my favourite part of the show.... amazing.

  • Ce que j'aime le plus, c'est la choré !! C'est vraiment super

  • Granted, Quasimodo doesn't mean to kill anyone - he incorrectly assumed the crowd were coming to bring Esmeralda to the gallows to be finished. So he was trying to defend her.

  • This is one of the two main problems I have with this version of the story. First of all, the real backstory about Esmeralda was totally eliminated and they made her to be a born-gyspy (instead of the fact, she had been the single child of a Frenchwoman and kidnapped as a baby and replaced with Quasimodo). After Clopin and some of the gypsies were killed (which was done by Quasimodo throwing bolders and pouring molten lead), Esmeralda panicked and tried to escape but Frollo got to her.

  • Whenever a story is made into a performance or a movie or anything, it is usually different from the original. They have to keep it entertaining, so I don't think it is that big a deal. They have to make it easy to understand, think about how hard that would be to convey! It does not need to be perfect, they never stick with the original anyways, just enjoy the damn thing.

  • In the original version of the novel, the band of gypsies and commonfolk wanted to free Esmeralda because they knew her to be innocent. It wasn't done as form of protest against a set of people, like this scene protrays. However, the irony was that Esmeralda herself was not a true gypsy and Quasimodo was the child of gypsies and it is him who brings down Clopin.

  • great dance with the fence

  • Poor Luck...I bet he must have been real hurt as the musical finished (the people who played the soldiers seemed to really hit him hard XD).

    Anyway great job!

  • When Clopin dies I almost cryed... and I never cry at something like this... and the song from the moment he dies becomes even more epic.

  • Esmerald...AH...

    I laughed :D

  • I love it when Esmeralda and Gringoire join in the last chorus parts. o_0

  • That humming is so epic... I didn't know Notre-Dame de Paris was such a great musical; guess that explains how it lasted so many years!

Really impressed with Luck Mervil :)

  • I don't know why but I always bawl everytime Clopin dies :,(

  • There are more than a thousand...

    At Texas's fence...

    And soon there will be

    Ten, and then Hundred Thousands..

    They will be millions

    That will be pleading

    Asylum

    Asylum

  • Look at Esmeraldla eyes..

So Wonderfull and full of emotives...

    3:28 / 3:29

    Regardez les yeux d'Esmeraldla.!

Tellement bzeau et plein d'émotions !

  • what is asylum?

  • Asylum is the fact of asking for a house.

  • asking for asylum if you would be arrested or anything, as long as you stay in the church you can't be arrested (some kind of weird thingy where peace be in god's house or something). i don't believe they do that anymore though.

  • "Asylum" is asking for protection. Originally as KiteRosesWater said it was being protected in a church. Today though when a foreigner pleads for Asylum from a country, it is to be granted citizenship or legal status because back home they might be in danger. Some immigrants in Switzerland recently combined both and took hold of a Church, asking for Asylum and not to be deported.

  • ooo i must say i didn't know that so thanks for the little lesson :)

  • they still do that if u are hunted by some kind of people in your own homecountry then you can go there and ask for asylum in a church

  • If so, then your country's still ruled by Führer. :)
