  • Poverty is just the symptom, not the disease. We don't treat symptoms. We treat diseases.

  • i live here in manila and you cant blame the people.. its the corruption from the top to the bottom. the pay is so low and the jobs so few that its the only way the store clerks and taxi drivers &etc can make a living.. its hard to blame anyone for the way things are here. however it has to start from the top and over time maybe the corruption will stop. no countries want to invest in the philippines because its so corrupt. also, abortion should be legal and birth control more readily available

  • Asians do the victory/peace sign without even noticing. ^^

  • Agree with the poster of this video that the Filipino people are the nicest that I've met in the world. Many people are very poor but there are also middle class and up to very rich. Education is prized. There is a lot of good that can be done.

  • You are right......anjojune.....you are right!

  • great video God bless there i hope new leder will change ther things for beter huh.. it hgret country there wth lovly people i have many frends there i respect them a lot

  • @MichaelBearwalf , first, I am sure I am indeed ignorant, though I my self lived in a houseish place where we had to put kerosene in dishes under the table legs to keep the bugs of the table, and and tortillas as a primary starch. ( I have no memory of this, but this is what I am told) Not abject poverty, but enough to to be ignorant.

Second, the swearing does nothing for your point, whatever it was. Feel free to slam me, just be man enough to use polite words.

  • so many poor people in the phils,...politicians clan own this country!there is no justice hir for poor people like us,....so silly,...this coming May elections we have the power!let's vote for nicanor perlas!

  • we have to show our countrymen how to actually help themselves and also give them a starter. we all need to do something righ now. start acting people and start doing.

  • hmmm i have been to Philipines as a tourist,(During the time of your EX president Aqino 's funeral) very expensive funeral yeah?. Manila is big and look busy as the other capital city in S.E.A. you have very beautiful island..i really love it, but manila is quiet durty.. not so much clean! and alot of beggers..and you have a very rich people too! they have a very good life yeah?

  • u r speaking in behalf of those FEEDING the poor but did u ask them if it's ok being that way?

  • @anjojune did I ask if they felt it was ok to be poor? Not in those words, but yes. More like, do you enjoy your work, your life, your children. They did, more than me at times. Do I think it is good? No. Am I happy to help. Yes. Did they appreciate the food. They said yes, but I am told that it took decades to build their confidence - the missionary in place did that. I assume love did it.

  • nice to feed the poor, charity work but will u forever feed them? isnt it better to teach them a livelihood to they can support themselves.. since poverty is a choice u can safely assume tat povert-stricken por r less likely to be disciplined at all.. lack of self discipline is one big factor there is overpopulation there with the ensuing lack of food, education, the list goes on.. Its time we make the citizens self reliant..God put us in this world to be self dependent not to be a parasite!

  • but can u feed them everyday n certainly not for the rest of their lives?? too many children with no future.. n leading a useless life.. better not to be born at all than to be born in poverty!

  • Gandi was poor, and I do not think anyone would say he was useless. Christ was poor, and not useless.

Better not to have been born? I don't know anyone who has the right to decide that.

I, for one, think all live is useful.

  • how can u say life is useful in the phils when life in fact has no meaning there..money has meaning n life takes only 2nd or third place in the ranking. come on!

  • @anjojune "all things work together for those who love the Lord and are called according to his purpose." That is how I can say any life has meaning.

Money has become the god of our world though. Not my god, but for many it is the only god.

  • @anjojune i was once poor, and it was actually the best times of my life, it was when i felt god everyday. anyways we have to help them, help do somethin don't turn your back on your people.

  • MISREPRESENTATION.

AGHAM AREA is only part of QUEZON CITY and QUEZON CITY is only part of METRO MANILA.

this video misleads the people of the world.

    PHILIPPINES is not an ETHIOPIA!!!

  • Yes to the geography.

    If I offended I apologize.

I have seen such things in many countries, even my own.

However, this one is the size of Central Park NY City, and that, in my eyes makes it large. And only a few hundred feet from where we went in, there was a modern mall.

My basic misunderstandings were cleared up more. There are more Starbucks in Manila than at home. The people were more helpful, spoke more languages, worried about clothing, cleanliness, and behavior more than at home.

  • in that case, please change your title.

  • Your use of English differs from mine. I changed it to - The Very Poor -Agwam - in Metro Manila - the size of Central Park

That's the best I can do with changing the meaning of it. Thus the comment section.

  • CALLING ALL FILIFINO'S ABROAD: Let us ALL unite as ONE, by helping the poor in OUR beloved country the Philippines. "WE cannot do everything, but WE can do something". Let's start with OUR own barrangay/suburbs first, then extend...DON'T asked what your country can do for you! ASKED what you can do for your country! Let us break the cycle of poverty, by giving one child(s) an education. WE cannot help them all, but we can START by HELPING ONE, then TWO. So, LETS START WITH 1, THEN MAYBE 2..

  • Are u rising fun? how can i reach to you? how can i know if ur organization is genuine.

  • i am from philippines but my place is not like that!

  • This is good work!!! How do you get involved in this (helping the poor)? btw nice old school track

  • in my view, ang talagang kailangan ng pilipino ay edukasyon dahil karamihan sa atin ay mang-mang.

i'm not talking about having a college education.

you can have all the degrees that you want and still end up a total IDIOT.

i hope i'm making any sense.......

  • wtf? who's murdering this song?

  • It is Veggie Tales. I teach kids. 100's of thousands of them. So kid music is my first stop. Just pretend you are a talking vegetable and you will understand.

  • LOVE the philippines

  • If each of us who are able to give a helping hand can share a moment of our lives to someone in need.. this world would be a better place.. God Bless to all who have open their hearts!!!

  • Most Filipinos live like rats.

  • So do I .. thanks

  • I prey for my people :(

  • I came to manila for vacation a few months ago and I had the best time of my life. You are the kindest and hardest working people Ive ever met. I cant wait to come back. I hate seeing poverty there. Its my favorite place. God Bless the people of the Phil. and SALAMAT to all of you for making my trip the best.

  • which part of your trip (in manila) did you like best...were did you stayed..???

  • The day we spent in Agwam and the 4 hours at the Pacific Miltary memoral. The 8 hours at the high school and the 4 at the elementary school we close though. It was mind blowing. Everyone treated us like we were awesome people. I was, in fact, so hopeless that I could give anything since everything we did it appeared as though we were the ones taking.

  • they can take our lives, riches, dignity, but you cannot take our freedom....haru! haru! haru!

  • even if Philippines becomes the Poorest country in the Whole wide world, i will still live in it if its God's will. I love my Homeland and the people around me.

  • there's actually no use trying to blame the government about the corruption and poverty of Philippines. i think the only problem about us is, We lack the love for our country. Most of us filipinos is just complain about everything, blaming others, lack of discipline and for being a social climber without helping those below you. I am proud to be a Pinoy whatever others say about me. This is just my opinion but i still love my Country Mabuhay ka Pilipinas.

  • if you are brave and ready to die confront the politicians and the military... if you are powerless, paciencia!!!!

  • damn, these sort of videos makes me wana cry...when will the philippines start to understand that LAW is LAW,i think if they were to stick with this terminology it will help the country substantially. Poor folks.....just wait until the next life...I hope God has something special stored up there for you....love and peace to all the filipinos

  • Hindi kasi naniniwala karamihan sa family planning.Basta masabing Katoliko magaanak ng madami at hindi iniisip ang bukas.

Poor physical planning & care to environment.Hindi ba ipinatutupad yung land used & zoning at building codes at subdivision codes.Ano ginawawa ng mga environmental planner sa Pinas?Mas maayos pa ngayon ang Thailand at vietnam.

Too much population will lead to food, water &energy crisis, sanitation, environmental & traffict problem,& so much more.

  • It makes me cry watching the video. I hope I can do something to help alleviate poverty in our country. I'm so depressed to hear extreme poverty in the Phils. Every country I'll go, foreigners always talk poverty about the Phils. What's our government doing? They are helpless. They are selfish.

What should we do now is to work hard for our survival...Work hard...

  • I have seen poor kids everywhere in Manila.

  • Very similar to vietnam condition these days but the vietnamese life is improving right now!

  • What corruption means in the Philippines is wealthy people have power and poor people have nothing.

Those in power then steal as much as they can. The roads are a mess, everything is under funded.

The people of the Philippines are amazing it's a shame there government is so uncaring and greedy.

  • Can you please present this video to the Philippines government, and to Gloria Arroyo herself.

  • arG... How would I do that? And what result would be expected?

  • u went to the squaters area. cool vid and song!

  • why u called it THE MOST AWESOME PEOPLE??

  • Awesome in the sense that that inspire AWE in me. They live in a way I could not imagine; I complain about the flavor of the coffee I drink. They took what we came to give, and gave back of themselves because that was who they were. Awe.

  • damn it touch my. it sad to see my people living in poor. i believe philippines is the richest country in asia we have plenty of resources but the corruption is widely spread how sad but im proud to be filipino thanks for helping the filipino pmccoy god bless and mabuhay

  • I suppose it is a good thing for me that I only worry about the people, rather than the government. I have read that the corruption is large, but have not understanding of what they might even mean. We will pray for you. Thank you for your comments.

  • but it seems they were all happy

  • It seems to me that there is not "but". They were all happy. It scares me that I complain about not enough __________ (fill in the blank), and these people gave us the love...

  • this notion that the very poor are very happy seems to me as a misconception. of course they are happy when you go to visit them. Sit outside late at night with a child from the streets, as ask her, "are you happy? what would make you happy?" i can guarantee you that she would not be content with her situation. you feed a child for a day, and she is happy. your idea of her happiness is limited, and rarely will you get the chance to hear her pain.

  • When we were in Sidney a few years back, the Prime Minister had a national speech where he apologized for a national disgrace. It seems they assumed that their way of life was better than the aboriginal's due to the very same argument. How could the miss what they never had?

After 20 years of forcing them to take what they never had, it dawned on them that their behavior was racisim, no matter how well intentioned.

  • Pmccoy505, you cannot compare colonialism with urban sprawl. Colonialsm was born out of the belief that the Europeans were the superior race. Urban sprawl is a result of the forces of capitalism, the remnants of colonialism, corruption, and the myriad of social problems that perpetuate poverty.

  • I am blurring the line a bit intentionally. It is very easy to go from, "providing basic human needs" to providing philosophic governmental ideas, such as you mention. If you feed someone, the live. That's good. If you give them a good house, and gun, a choice and a voice, you have to define what a good house is, why guns should be used, what good choice is if you are not enpowered, and protection when they use their voice. That brings us back to colonialism.

I prefer food, water and love.

  • essentially you are saying that it is better to sustain the poor rather than empower them. to keep them dependent on food aid is better than to allow them to farm, because it withholds from them the power to govern their own lives as they see fit. you are arguing in favour of oppression.

  • If you look at the work of the grameen bank in bangladesh, you will see how defining such standards allowed for the empowerment of hundreds of thousands of people, mostly women. you will see how teaching the poor does not oppress them--rather, it empowers and allows them to rise above poverty. the grameen bank never sought to control the people--it simply gave the people the tools to help themselves.

  • Do not ever say that it is not in the best interests of, say, orphaned street children, to give him an education, clean water and three meals a day, and a loving home, simply because they have never had such "luxuries'. This is entirely different from destroying a way of life, a culture, a people. You do not allow a kid to sleep alone on the side of the street simply because he has done so his whole life. Saving a baby from contracting cholera devastates no one. Your argument is flawed, pmccoy.

  • Though I agree with you, your examples are not all that true. I have hung out with people who slept on the side of the road by choice. I have seen homes that define love in a way that makes me think that hitting people with a 2 by 4 could be considered kind, and I have lived with people that considered running water to be corruption of basic human right. They carried it from wells, because the could, and thought they should. Who am I to tell them otherwise.

I prefer to give water, food & love.

  • i agree. homelessness is sometimes a choice. i have seen many myself in the streets of vancouver, a city that has continuously topped the lists for most liveable city in the world, a place full of opportunity. and it is not running water per say that is a human right. it is access to clean water, to water that is not contaminated with chemical run-off or human excrement. Running water may very well be a bad thing, because running water means the privatization of a public good.

  • This type of discussion reminds me why I would rather rely on people with the gift and talent for it, rather than my own thought. Unintended consequences are the result of insufficient knowledge. I have insufficient knowledge. So I do what I do, because I am good at it, and at let other do the money/resource distribution, because they are good at it.

  • then my point has been made.

  • My ignorance does not constitute your brilliance, however, I concede you appear to know more than I do. :<)

  • AMEN!

  • thanks for the video ! i loved it . it really touches my heart . pmccoy was right that inspite of poverty still managed to smile a huge smile and that is really good . peace !

  • And we complain about what we don't have! These people have all that matters, Love!

  • its sad.. my city , my home good vid ;)

  • Every large has poverty. 20 million people. The most awesome thing I saw in your city was the number of happy people. Everyone smiled. Familes were large. Friendly is the best word to describe it. This video was the part that hurt my heart, but the people made me smile.
