@darmp64 the beauty of these is tune it how ever!! what ever pleases your ear in a 1 string. with 2 strings I will generally tune an octave. I will pick one pleasing note the the 2nd string and octave. thanks!!
If these quick plans i done want to try selling them or make one? I always admired your canjo build and today i wanted to make one and remembered your the pro of making canjos, I just want to see my childhood dream happen...
Hey i done a quick drawing on paint with information on a canjo i would love to have for my many years to come, Would you be able to try or make this as one of your videos? I be trying to make this soon after i move but i keep watching your videos and i wanted to see how you do, Is that ok? I love your videos i loved that black rock canjo.
Thanks for posting this video. Your Canjo's are awesome looking! I have two comments. The first is, (and most respectfully) that some can's do sound different.. even though you say that they just have a visual interest, you may want to rethink that. The other is that if a person did go out and sell these for about $5.00 a piece, between the cost of the wood and the guitar tuner they would be taking a loss. Just saying. Happy Holidays to you. :-)
your right there is some difference in the can sounds, but it really is not significant. I have built 5-600 of these at this point and tried many things to make them louder and nothing shy of a piezo and an amp makes them to loud. as to the cost the ones we sell for $5 are shorter scale 1 string models. the wood is scrap from our cigar box guitars, fret wire is short pieces we can use there, only real cost is a string $.12 and a tuning peg $ .50 most actually sell $15-20 Thanks!
Is it okay if you put some ductape on your can or would it ruin the soun? I haven't bought the strings yet but I wasn't thinking and I added some decorative tape to the can and I'm worrying it won't work... please help
@joshtrantham the early models we put a small screw through the can. later models we cut a lip that keeps the can centered, and string pressure does the rest.
@orpingtondood no not necessary, but fret wire is cheap and easy to install so why not?? you could play slide or play it fretless and just mark the positions.. but again fretting is way to easy, and its cheap
as for tunings.. with 1 string use what ever guage string you want, and tune it to a note that pleases you! with 2 strings kinda same deal, i like to use like a 1st and 3rd string or 1st and 4th and tune them an octave or like Da Ad Gd Dg tune it to your ear and have fun!!
what do you tune the string..or strings at open
