  • i had to watch this in history first off you spelled soldier wrong as well as many other words 2 the song is not wake me up when september ends its bring me to life by evanescence featuring linkin park you would know that if you read the description because youtube says the name of the artist on every video followed by buy "song name" on itunes

  • the operation failed due to horrible planning. churchills comment that "crucial info was gathered" was just an excuse for the utter desaster the raid was. these lessons were nothing but obvious.

  • Dieppe was supposed to be a surprise attack which would have occurred at night. The problem was that a German ship saw them. The German ship reported it to the Germans at Dieppe. The surprise element was a failure. The Canadians and British waited until morning for what ever reason and then attacked. That was a stupid decision...

Sources: "The Canadian Challenge" text book for Canadian History. Used in Southern Ontario High Schools.

  • NONE OF YOU MAKING COMMENTS WERE THERE. War is nasty, brutal, viscious and full of insanity.....Not to mention a lost cause for humanity. Please stop second guessing.... it only makes you look foolish.

  • The Germans shot the only footage. There were 60% Cdn losses at Dieppe. It never should have been carried out. Russia wanted a second front. Dieppe was a test. Surprise was lost so the Germans bolstered defences; no air support; no real support from surface ships; the tanks mired in the loose shingle on the beach. About as badly planned and outfitted as the defense of Hong Kong. Cdns do well later in Italy, France and Holland, winning like they win at hockey with strength heart and character.

  • My father was there aged 18 with the 40 Royal Marine Commando he was one of the lucky ones and lived on to the age of 83 when he passed away in August 2007.

  • This makes me proud to be Canadian!!

  • Most of this video is from the normandy landings, not dieppe.

  • To answer to the whole Montgomery thing. The original raid planned and trained for was operation Rutter. It called for extensive bombardment and the dropping of paratroopers behind the Germans. It was cancelled, the troops dispersed. Montgomery suggested the raid should be cancelled for all time. They recycled it, called it jubilee, no further training, no airborne troops and minimal bombing, in favour of surprise. The raid was 19 Aug 1942, on 10 aug 1942, Montgomery was sent to Africa.

  • what the hell are you talking about. mountbatton asked a highly rated montgomery for suggestions. montgomery said yes. so he did. it was montgomerys influence that decided it. he would not even be considered as part of it because hye did not make the decision. but his influence killed many canadians. that bastered

  • montgomery had alot of influence over canadian generals. so who do you think was pulling the strings

  • No regiments were ever ordered to take on missions. Their commanding officers could refuse if they wanted to and the job offered to someone else. But to do so would have seemed 'not of moral fibre'

and would have meant loss of face.

The commanding officers were not to know how badly this op was to go wrong.

Hindsight is an exact science. So to claim

these men were intentionly lead to certain slaughter is just crass point scoring.

Montgomery didn't want to be involved in this raid.

  • @LordGodofMercy Actually, yes they are. That is the whole purpose of war.

  • Never never never forget those Braves ! I am French and now have been living in Canada for 16 years. 08/19/1942 is a major date in ww2 though the sacrifices were immense. I will probably be in Dieppe this next august and will have a few small Cdn flags into the rocks of the beach . God Bless them and God bless Canada.

  • I think tht its fare to say that the Canadians were some of the most brutialy slade men of them all. I mean Dieppe, Juno, I know Im going into the great war but The Royal Newfie reg. in the trenches of France. That was not even a fight, it was pure man slauter.

  • Good video but it's hard to take it seriously when you spell it "soldjers" instead of soldiers lol...

  • so truly he let our troopsdie instead of spreading forces so less of us and their men would parish.

  • nolordgodofmercy i was not stating that us generals were better. i did say that some of our generals were good. all the other british generals are just as good if not better and they helped us to win. montgomery was the one i have a grudge in. i live in america but im from canada so i should know. canadian troops fought some of the hardest in the war. oh and know we did not willingly sign up for it. your confused with DDAY. We suggested spreading allied forces. but montgomery decided not to.

  • Stating Canada had no military command and no input into strategic decisions is

pure lazy ignorance. A veteran of WW1Montgomery saw the horror of a full-on Infantry assault. He was respected by all under his command for his refusal to commit men without minimising all possible threat. If you are playing a crass game of U.S. Generals are better than British Generals then you should be ashamed. To paint these Heroes as victims of a false contempt is a detriment to their memory and Montgomery.

  • no you are wrong. the canadians did not have miliary commanders because they were a part of briain. montgomery called the shots. plus i don't think the canadian army would enjoy going into a known suicide mission.

  • thats a shame. dieppe had more canadian australian and new zeawalanders lost then any other war. montgomery sent them in as test rats to test defenders. he didn't put any british troops in because he thought that britain troops were worth to much to spend.. instead he sends in his allies who he thought was expendable. he was an asshole.thats why eisenhower got the head job for the allies and not him. if theres anybody to blame, blame him.

  • No you are wrong. The Canadians were chomping at the bit to get into the action

    after coming to Britain.

It was the Canadian Military commanders that requested the mission. So if anyone is an Arsehole concerning this matter then it's you.

  • That is not correct. Canada wanted to be the big player in the operation. Once it was cancelled Monty wanted it to be cancelled forever. He was posted to the Med, Mountbatten took over and reinstituted the mission. As for Ike, he was the right choice. Churchill knew the USA would eventually dwarf the UK contribution to the war effort and Ike was the best man to hold the coalition together.

  • what is the song title??

  • when september ends by green day

  • @kimnat0r no its not..

  • fact is..the Canadian force was used as guinny pigs..to test german defences...prior to the normandy landings.glad to see we have matured as a country, and dont let the Americans or Brits, tell us what to do anymore.

  • what you put up as fact is just a myth. they were no guinea pigs. its much more complicated than that.

  • well that's sort if right. The attack was more of a diversionary effort by the Western Allies to relieve the Russians.

  • the americans never told you what to do. the british did. and your right. it was a horrible thing. it was montgomerys fault. he called the shot. so only canadians not british would die.

  • not Montgomery's ....it was Mountbatten's decision.

  • My grandfather was at Dieppe, Royal Regiment of Canada. At Puys, he was one of the ones that actually returned, out of about 66 from his Regiment. One of 33 that returned wounded. Survived WWII. died 2005. RIP Granddad. Love you.
