I had this exact same problem a few weeks ago and took me over an hour to figure out what was going on. Had the forks out, the lot. IF ONLY i found this video before. Such a simple operation all i can do is laugh.
Excellent! BUT it leaves out the importance of tightening the top compression bolt afterward, else the headset will likely re-loosen as the bike is ridden.
The top cap is not what keeps the headset tight once it's been adjusted....the stem is bolted onto the steerer after the headset is adjusted, so it is the STEM that holds the headset in adjustment. Top cap to make the adjustment, STEM to keep it in adjustment. The headset WILL NOT re-loosen if the top cap is not tightened. Once the STEM is bolted on, you could remove the top cap, if you wanted, and the headset would remain properly adjusted.
Well, more importantly, the compression nut is intended to displace the pressure of the stem which could crack your steerer tube. Also, I wouldn't do this in a bike stand--you need the front wheel resting on the ground to make sure everything stays in place.
How many things can cause a squeek coming from the headset/stem, I only hear it when I am off the saddle climbing... I thought it was the crank, but it was tightened.
waw i was looking for a how-to video to adjust my headset...i got totally confused because i saw the expert village video before...that video was crap...this video saved my headset! :D
i see a real problem with this video never losen up the top bolt first alwayys loosen the sides first reason why is because when you loseen this top bolt first while the sides are still locked the star nut will spin inside the steerer tube and it is a real pain to get out i was only trying to help so please dont vote agaisnst me
The starnut cant spin in the steerer! If you ever installed or spoke to someone that has installed one, they will tell you how tight inside the tube they are! Of course you can move one but it will take quite a lot of force!
@clash532 If the star nut is spinning inside the tube, you've got bigger problems than which order to release the bolts. The video is completely in the right.
another good tip for bmx rs... take a warn tyre cut the metal ring out both sides. cut 1 inch of the tyre fit into a new (good tyre) fit inner tube and put on wheel. garenteed no puntchers. unless you ride over a feckin big nail
just a reminder, when you are tightening the two bolts on stem, make sure you turn the screws one turn at a time so that the torque is distributed evenly on both bolts. cheers!

Thanx pal, headset went loose the night before a race and I made it worse because I had an allen key and very little (zero) knowledge. Saved the day!

Excellent video! I looked at several similar ones, but this was the only one that REALLY explained it all in a way that made total sense to me!

Theres a wedge with threading in the base of my forks that the compression bolt is supposed to catch but it wont, any help?

is your fork threaded?
danielgoneloco 2 years ago
@oddtravis is the bolt or the nut stripped if so You may need to get a new bolt?

why do all these bike maintenance vids insist on following the manufacturers torque settings then tighten up with a plain allen key anyway.....?
