Personally I see no reason to migrate to windows 8. Windows XP, W2k3, W2k8, Windows 7 does just fine. I think that the development community would do fine to just stick with those platforms and not migrate and just develop on top of them until Microsoft fires Balmer and Sinofsky.

Wow, this is SO close to the truth to be crazy. Lots of companies are losing faith. If you add HTML5 / Javascript as a first class citizen on a PC then there is no reason to buy a PC. What is it that the Windows PC would offer than a Mac or Linux system couldn't add just as easily?

Since when is compiling so damn important? JavaScript performes rather nicely on today's JS engines. Also even though MSFT stays rather silent indications are that the core is being moved to something WPF/Silverlight-like allowing more direct control over Window's innards and features. Let's not jump the gun :D

Oh yeah: and it is an awesome movie and you can't emphasise enough on how much effort developers (and partner companies) have invested in Silverlight and WPF knowledge.

You wonder why websites before poorly on mobile devices that use huge amounts of javascript? The web needs better solution than javascript. Obviously Silverlight is not it. Neither is Flash. @Ohmly77 I think you are looking for Google Native Client: fast, secure and portable. It is basically LLVM code that is directly and securely compiled into native code. It runs nearly as fast as C/C++ and is as secure and portable as sandboxed javascript+HTML.

The only drawback is that Native Client doesn't have good tooling. But as Google is very good at making Eclipse-based tooling I hope to see an early plugin in a few months.
