@mackler This IS the first and ONLY Paul...He never died, it was a whole load of BS, aparently you don't like Paul at all, because aparently to you he sucks...Idiot
Auguest 15, 1966. Washington, DC. I won a trip by calling into the local radio station and was part of a group that got to go see the Beatles. It was to be my first airline flight but there was a strike and we had to take a five hour bus ride. I remember it well and it is one of my finest moments as a teen. I did not scream like a girl and in fact I was mad that it was so hard to hear them. They were set up on second base and it was hard to see them. I did'nt own any binoculars.
Respond to this video... Thanks for posting the original sound - have been wanting to hear that for years. I always thought that it was a shame that they overdubbed the concert in the studio.
this has always bugged me about this video - it looks like both john and george are strumming bar chords throughout the song, so where's the riff coming from?
one would expect george to be playing it seeing as it's unlikely john would feel like playing the riff and singing at the same time, but george is clearly not playing it! and nor is john!
this has bugged me for years, does anyone have an explanation?
@leoleoleoleo It's possible to pick the riff while holding down the bar chord...there's a version somewhere of a live performance...not miming...where jJohn Lennon does precisely that on an acoustic. Check too the guitar lessons for this song...
All those years of performing at The Cavern in Liverpool and in Hamburg rubbed off on them. It helped them get through a performance, even through the primitive technology they had back then. Attempts at real PA's didn't really start till The Monterey Pop Festival 2 years later ( '67 ). The Beatles didn't have monitors either. They didn't exist then. Quite often their vocals were fed through the cheap speakers in the stadium. Ones meant to announce baseball games with. Ringo mentioned this.
I know if I were one of those lucky ones that made it to a Beatles' concert I would pass out for the happiness and I would scream like a little bitch too, and I'm a fifteen year old brad!
@radmac76 It is on The Beatles Anthology DVD set. Best Buy I think usually has it for around 60$. If you are any kind of Beatles fan this Anthology is very much worth having.
Hey lucasloislily! John sang "I'm in love with her and I feel fine" Paul sang "She's in love with me and I feel fine at the same time mixed the two sentences.
Everything that is now in music, comes from this and other Beatles concerts and records. There never has been and never will be another band who can capture and change the world the way they did. They came along at the right time, and they were great!
Oh my God George is soooo f@cking sexy!!!!! What I would give to go back in time and be a teenager in the 60s and see the Beatles live! Dammit I was born in the wrong generation.
Saw this on our b/w TV & also their 1st U.S. tour shown on Ed Sullivan, 1964. I was just 6. Asked my mom "what is a Beatle?" Their "haircuts" were a unique thing back then (the start of guys having longer hair). Crazy about the Beatles.
I've never heard of the new CD taken from the soundboard. Is it an official release? It's nice to hear the actual performance because the original aired version was anything but...
@lucasloislily Actually the Beatles did things like this on purpose just prove a point that the fans were screaming so loud that they would not even notice that they had just changed a lyric. Notice how Paul smiles right after that, wether intentional or not they thought it was funny. But also it was the sad end to their touring, as they would tour for only one more year. They would stop for that reason, nobody could hear them sing.
@gooddaysunshine66 Actually the main reason they stopped touring was because they were unable to reproduce the sounds and experimental effects they were getting in the studio come 1966 and 67. But also for the reason you stated. And as for the messed up lyrics, it was most likely unintentional, because John says one phrase "She's in love with me", and Paul/George say the correct one for that section which is "I'm in love with her", just an honest mistake by John, so it's laughed off!
@ToddCMorgan You are correct Todd, when they stopped touring they had already done some songs that they could not perform live, at least not in the 60s. The Beatles did not want to tour anymore, nobody was listening to their music. So they intentionally did an album that could not be done live. Thus comes months later, Sgt, Pepper album.
they're the beatles, if they would have really tried to penny lane live they needed no more than an orchestra, but wh hire an orchestra if nobodys gonna listen to the song, they hated touring frim their first half hour gig, they wanted to get wild onstage like they did back then, always palying the same songs the same way sucked for them.
@OropherThranduil Oh, I know they we're tired of touring. By 1966, not only had they been playing the same songs, but they had some bad experiences, like the 'Jesus' comment backlash in the states, and the whole incident in Manila. But they have stated in many interviews that the main reason they didn't do anymore tours was because they couldn't perform the songs live very effectively. Mainly do to the complex, overlapping harmonies, and the fact that synths were "big as a room" back then.
after the last concert george thought about quitting the band, he said he doesn't want to be a beatle anymore, i think it really was mostly becasue the exhausting shedule, the shitty stage equipment, manila, difference getting those songs to sound good onstage, george didn't like performing paperback writer for that matter, because the lead didn't sound as he wanted it, it were many reasons, but their concerts were all about beatlemania, because of brian, that was another reason.
