I was wondering...... is the ASAT Classic beefy enough for great solos with sustain? I mean; isnt it thin like the usual single-coils in fender strats? I'm thinkin of buyin one but im not 100% sure...thanks in advance and btw keep rockin good man; excellent music bro
@DjNorbax Not nearly as twangy as typical Tele p-ups. They are much more dark and have a bit more beef. I would personally go with a Gibson LP if you are all about the solos. I play almost all rhythm guitar, and the G&L ASAT is perfect for that.
Thanks for the info. I really do like the way the rhythm track came out here. I have many preamp 12AX7 tubes including some NOS RFT tubes. I will be trying them all in different valves once I get the amp. I thought I heard the JJ EL34L power tube sound, but I was not sure. I am also going to experiment with some THD yellow jackets model YJS with JJ EL84 tubes. I am curious just how this will effect the typical marshall classic crunch. I will keep you posted. Thanks again.
Hey, I just purchased a 1987 Marshall JCM 800 2205 partially after watching this video. I am the rhythm guitar player in my band and love the tone of the 2205. Your tone and your song are amazing, and I am a live concert sound engineer by career. What preamp tubes in what valve slots (1-5) are you using (type/brand)? Also, what power tubes are you using (type/brand)? What are your 2205 amp settings? I am waiting for my amp to show up and am curious how you accomplish this rhythm tone.
@tdvf1100 Preamp valves are eastern european National 12AX7's. Power amp is JJ E34L's. Presence completely rolled off. Bass at 2:00 o'clock. Middle at noon. Treble at 11 o'clock. Gain was around 2:30 o'clock. I have played so many 800's and have never heard one that sounds like mine. Mine is like an 800 breeded with a recto. It is really fizzy.
@tdvf1100 It's my belief that the JCM800 was the last of the truly classic Marshall amps. I had a JCM800 half stack as well as a 900 and a JTM600 through a TV cab loaded with greenbacks and the 800 left them all for dead. No effects required just pure Marshall tone.
@ThisRandomBoy I personally think that marshalls sound best through mesa cabs loaded with vintage 30s. Mesa cabinets have a slightly darker tone than most other cabs. Try it out dude; I highly recommend it!
@montywilt thanks! im going down to record my bands new single, and im buying the cab off the producer as hes just recently sold his rig and bought a new mesa lonestar and obviously doesnt need the cab. so im gonna try it out :)
@IRONMAIDENrockinrio I sold the 6100 a year ago. That was the EL34 model which they only made in 1992. The rest are 6L6. I found mine in a used guitar shop in Austin, TX. There are a few laying around on the market.
@IRONMAIDENrockinrio I sold it because I wanted something more simple. I used to own mostly complex amps, but now I own 4 simple amps. Only one has a FX loop. All are technically two-channel, but only one has a usable second channel. I just like the sound of simpler circuits. Also 100 watts was way too much for me. My 50 watt 800 is the most powerful amp I own now.
@UnchainTheNight1 Which amp? I bought the 800 used a couple years ago and its outer guts look right, but i didn't open up the plate to look at the capacitors and circuitry and such. The 6100 I bought used a couple years back too and it was stock. The I slightly modded the duotone by just switching over to KT77s and rebiasing, nothing permanent though.
@UnchainTheNight1 Yeah, not sure about the 800 2205. It definitely sounds miles better than any other I have ever played and I have played at least 20 or so. One of these days I should look into the stock components. I know it still has stock transformers and such in it, but am not sure about the real guts.
message me with questions that are worded better. I can't currently understand what you are trying to ask. What I think you are asking has an answer too long for a comment box, so just message me and I will answer your questions.
Have you used regular SM57s, or just the Unidyne? I'm curious if you notice a big difference between the two, I've read conflicting opinions all over on this.
thanks. we are tracking 2 or 3 more demos in a couple weeks. while the amps & guitars are in there I will see if I can rent out a sick video camera to make a video for my 800, ad30htc, and rocker 30. I am unsure of the mic placements I will use, I might do a 57 up on the cone and a neumann u87 in the room. and show the difference. All this will be done in Pro Tools HD.
I had the EL34 model. It wasn't too hot for metal, but neither is the duotone. I haven't played a 6100LM. I have sold my triamp and 6100 since and I have my duotone consigned at a shop in austin.
I actually really like its tone for metal, it's just not quite aggressive enough for me. I want something a bit more modern which I think the Duotone would handle.
I'm kinda hesitant though, I think I'd rather just go for something that is an all out metal machine this time around.
How does this compare to the 2204 JCM 800? Im trying to nail the Underoath tone, and he uses a 2205 from what I can see in pictures, but people are convinced the 2204 is better.
There are a lot of lemons in the 2205/2210 family. The earlier models sound pretty bad for the most part, but from '86 and on they sound pretty incredible. The 2204 is ballsier and is a little more classic sounding while the 2205 is more modern and aggressive sounding.
Nice sound! By the way I also own a jcm800 2210 and gibson les paul. When I'm recording I use a sm57 but I can not get anything similar to you. Mine sounds like a cheap amp in recordings. For recording I'm using a presonus interface (class A imputs) COuld you give me any advice in mic placement and in EQ and effects that need to be used?
Put the 57 just right outside the dust cap and a centimeter away from the grill. That will give you the most control over the tone. Track each distorted guitar's take twice. Pan one hard left and the other hard right. On this recording I just used some basic PT plugins. Used the Joe meek meequalizer; bass +2dB, mid +2dB, treble +2dB. mid freq was 1.8k. for compression i just used the "fatten" preset and adjusted the threshold to where it was hardly compressing the track. What year is your 2210?
Thanks for the advices! Mine is a 87 amp. I'm quite happy with it, but it is difficult to find the point where the sound is not too bassy or not enough fat.
I put the 57 on the grill, pointing directly at the speaker. It was placed right outside the dust cap. I placed the md 421 the same way except on the other side of the dust cap. It is very probable you will have phase issues, but all you have to do is make sure the sound is hitting the mics at the same time. This will get rid of the phase issue. So just move the 421 back or forth by millimeters until you find the gap. Otherwise you could just use the phase inverter in the protools eq/comp
Awsome sound dude! how do you mick the Sennheiser MD-421 and the SM57 at the same time? in what direction, are the sm57 on or ofcone? and what abou the MD?
jammed over this with a jh-1 jackhammer distortion pedal was epic
amazing song dude

wich marshall do you prefer, if you could only have one of the two?
mayoporuno 1 year ago
i prefer MY jcm 800. but if i was in a shop, I would probably pick the 6100. The 800's are way to inconsistent and not too reliable.

How do you like the 6100 compared to the Duotone?
I'm thinking about trading mine for one, but I'm not sure it'll cover the heavy tones I want from it (modern metal).
