the new beetle is rubbish and this also misses the point - it has no soul ! the face makes it look constipated. Throwing in as many gadgets as you like is also not the point. Get back to the drawing board and this go through a bag of weed before you start!!!
I'm with a lot of others in saying this. Why didn't Volkswagen go into production with this vehicle? The New Beetle was a hit. It is nothing more than a good looking impractical version of the Golf. This beats the hell out of the practical Chrysler based mini-van they went with instead.
They would have sold and out sold the GM, Dodge, Hondas if they actually built this thing... you can cure a sick person, you can make a drunk person sober, but stupid is forever... STUPID VW- you should have made this van over that piece of crap rout an.
routan is not even a vw, vw needs to understand that theres a market in america for THESE kinds of vehicles, not everyone wants the gas guzzlin' tahoes, yukons, or escalades...america is so diverse, so is our taste in vehicles...i would buy this vw bus as soon as it would arrive to my city! too bad it never happened...
Haha, automotive companies' marketing executives are always so full of shit. Just pick up any automotive magazine and look at the ads to know what I'm on about.
I mean, BMW's Joy concept? And almost any Seat ad? And this? I would buy this car any day of the week, sure, but appalling advert!
i love old vws i a 56 beetle and a 67 split screen camper, my dad drives the beetle and i drive the camper, how shall i say it if for eg if the bulli bus was actually produced where would the majority of them be 10 20 30 or 40 years from now, my bet is the breakers yard, vehicles built today aren't built for people to have them 20 years or more and also id say there is a lot more dangerous drivers on the roads today then the 1950s or 1960s eg, plus they will never have the same value.
i would d think that people would spend 40 k on a safe fast modern version of nostalgia rather than all those that are stuffing and retrofitting the current tekno gizmos into aging t2 and t3s. this vehicle would be a great catalyst for those wanting style and function in their lives.
The concept shown in this video is a grotesque insult to my '65 t2. It has *nothing* of the "vibe of the old traditional Microbus," and I'm glad I never saw it on the road. You couldn't get me to trade my '65 for this concept if you gave me the $40k.
@McSchetch if some one offered me 40K and this for my 65, id sell it and combine the money to get a new 6f and give it a psychedelic paintjob and an awesome interior
yes too much talk, but the van looks great.it still has the vibe of the old trad microbus with modern safety and toys. awd and vr6 would be standard. too expensive to make units tho. could produce it in south amer or mex. but the current vw/chrysler van are poor examples of hip people movers that vw traditionally cornered. i hope the lack of sales with the routan will motivate vw to revisit the drawing board and look at new production strategies.
Agreed it woukld look better with round headlights. I think they should present at least a model option with retro exterior styling for the surfer and beach market - it must be a big market sector.

Well VW, I don't want what you sell anymore. If I can't buy what I want, then you lose the sale.
Consumers need to step it up. There's no law out there that says you have to spend every cent you have. Let's just hide our car buying money for a year or so and maybe the car companies will get the message.

WHAT A GARBAGE AD. Enough with the footage of yuppies and quarter second teaser shots. And the "bus" is just a passenger van. Boring.
The 2002 Eurovan camper was the last interesting vehicle VW made. Then, of course, they discontinued it. Now those vehicles sell for ridiculous prices and are expensive to maintain. If they made anything as versatile as the old busses from the 70s, they would sell like crazy.
Too much intro-talk and too little show. Lousy review. I'll have a VW California , the real deal will do. Rather than sitting here listening to much talk and inspiration music that leads to nothing.
I would love to see this here but VW isn't about to release a higher end vehicle in the U.S. knowing that it would only sell here...the rest of the world just doesn't have the same affinity with the Microbus...
This was a concept vehicle from 2001. Developed soon after the success of the retro beetle. I'm guessing that VW's "Routan" was the eventual product of this concept.

No shit sherlock, that's because the Routan is a Chrysler. The Routan is an embarrassment, a stain on an otherwise pristine canvas. The microbus concept failed (I think) because of safety reasons. I could be mistaken but I heard that from someone working for VW some years ago. I agree, it would be excellent and I would definitely buy one.
Why the totally new design? Just add some small adjustments to the old T2 and start putting them back in production. Maybe a sunroof and a rockin stereo. I don't want this hi-tech crap, i want to see a vintage design!
The Routan is NOT okay, considering that it's a VW in Dodge clothing. This video said that "they wanted a vehicle that had something- SOUL". Sorry, but as a VW owner / lover. VW lost their soul with the Routan, which total opposite of VW's vibe of uniqueness to the status quo. Nice try VW, but you'd do better with the microbus.
@singingabc123 About as hard as it is for lawmakers to accept the fact that some of us are willing to risk sitting forward of the front axle in order to drive what we like, sadly.
@singingabc123 Exactly. I had a 1969 VW Westfalia Campmobile. It was an absolute love affair. Very functional and mechanical problems were a snap to fix. Geez, what are these idiot engineers thinking about today??
My brother toured the Chrysler plant where the VW Routan is made. (Routan is German for FAKE bus) Chrysler explained that the vans on the line with red stickers were VW and the others were Chrysler. How original!!! VW execs should have their heads examined.
And VW gives us in the US the Routan. Looks EXACTLY like Chrysler built it, which they did of course. No VW "soul" in that thing whatsoever. A few modifications to this Microbus and it would have been sell-able. Bummer.
"So we had this idea..." we decided to dump a car that would have redefined our brand by bringing something old into the present, but instead we spend hundreds of millions launching a full sized sedan to compete with the Mercedes S class. And it failed.
VW - if you're listening - this design is STILL FRESH! Make it!
VW totally could have pulled this off. Why they decided to put a VW front end on a hideous Chrysler product is beyond me. I was beyond dissapointed. I was embarrassed.
Scrap the Chrysler. It's not going to sell. It's not VW and your customers know it.
I have only seen 2, that's right, 2 in person since they were launched 2 years ago!! "So we had this idea for a New Microbus. It failed, but rather than bringing our new T5 to America or dropping the van idea altogether, we decided to put a bunch of VW badges on Caravans & Town & Countries to try & fool dyed-in-the-wool VW van enthusiats into thinking that we have a proper van in our lineup as well as pander to a demographic that knows absolutely NOTHING of our classic van heritage?!!!"
this vehicle WOULD HAVE SOLD LIKE CRAZY. it is unique. the young want to embrace the eco-movement and the VW bus was a huge part of that. the older folk (I owned a 79 bus, fuel injected and huge sunroof) want to buy another one. GET IT GOING!!!
VW settling for a Chrysler piece of crap is a total sellout. SHAME ON VW. craporate sell out. their proposed MINIVAN IS GARBAGE.
GET CREATIVE, GET the SPIRIT. REPENT AND DO IT RIGHT
It did'nt have broad enough appeal. You can see by this commercial the target audience is 20 somethings. Surfing and rock climbing is a very small percentage of the driving market.
Other complaint: It doesn't resemble the original quite as much as the New Beetle does.
The design is ugly - especially the front. The interior is too strange- the seats look uncomfortable- the whole car looks like a lifesize model of a kid's toy.
All I can say is I was ready to pounce on the pre-order cue for the Microbus, money in hand. I NEVER have done that with any car. VW are fools for missing the opportunity.
I hope they come out with it but they make it like this with the pull-out handles, auto doors, TVS!, and almost every think else. Can't wait till September when it comes out.
MacDaddySPAZZS what makes you think it is coming out in September. All reports and investigations I have read indicate volkswagen have completely kooked it and canned the whole project.
Anyone that works for VW knows the concept is NOT being built and wouldn't be speculating. The concept was redesigned once, then officially canned in 06. They should've worked out that labor dispute and went forward with this even if it was going to cost 35k. I'm sure it would have saved VW from it's downward spiral now.
interesting concept, but it looks more like a freight train from the 1930s from the front than it does a VW microbus. I think it's the lack of round headlights.
When they built the new Beetle, it was a big hit here in North America but it wasn't so popular anywhere else. I think VW saw that the same thing could happen again if they built this Microbus concept. I wanted them to make this too, but we're stuck now with the Microbus built by Chrysler.
So why didn't they build it??? I think it would be very popular, especially here in California. The New Beetle was and still is a big hit, so why not the Microbus??? Thanks for posting this video!
so they had this idea.

So help us out....what is the word?
From all I've read Chrysler are basically rebadging the town & country and calling it vw...will it look and feel anything like a real microbus??
thanks

Anyone that works for VW knows the concept is NOT being built and wouldn't be speculating. The concept was redesigned once, then officially canned in 06. They should've worked out that labor dispute and went forward with this even if it was going to cost 35k. I'm sure it would have saved VW from it's downward spiral now.

yeah I think round headlights would have helped the overall look but hey, I want one anyway. Will they ever build it? 2001 was a long time ago

What a stinker! I used to own a beautiful 1961 microbus but this THING is, as someone else has suggested, is BUTT UGLY! LOL!!!
Thank you VW for not inflicting this grisly BEAST on us!

interesting concept, but it looks more like a freight train from the 1930s from the front than it does a VW microbus. I think it's the lack of round headlights.

I just hope that the minivan Chrysler will build for VW will retain some of the spirit of the Microbus, then I will buy one.

too bad they never made it. they just phased out the eurovan in north america this year.
Donnahasaids 4 years ago
Absolutely brilliant - spot on, shame they never went through with it.

VW not building this was one of the worst blunders in the last 10 years of the auto industry.

When they built the new Beetle, it was a big hit here in North America but it wasn't so popular anywhere else. I think VW saw that the same thing could happen again if they built this Microbus concept. I wanted them to make this too, but we're stuck now with the Microbus built by Chrysler.

for one very big reason its but ugly where as the new beetle looks kind of good
roebteiskaos 5 years ago
So why didn't they build it??? I think it would be very popular, especially here in California. The New Beetle was and still is a big hit, so why not the Microbus??? Thanks for posting this video!
