William Nack, who's writings of thoroughbreds is like poetry, said of Barbaro: As he watched him come down the stretch at Churchill toward the finish line he had memories of Secretariat and believed tha Barbaro would win the Triple Crown, but he never got the chance. Still Barbaro ran just because he loved to run. We have had many great horses. I wonder what thoroughbred heaven must be like, what a field of runners can take to that track.

I don't know if he would have beaten Bernardini in the Preakness. But if he did, the Belmont would have been a foregone conclusion, as he would have relished the mile and a half. A career that may have known no boundaries. Turf, Dirt, Mud, it just did not matter. His story will forever remain unfinished, the athlete dying young. What could have been?

But what was so great about Secretariat is he ran his ASTOUNDING Trip Crown without horrible injury - which is ssssoooo much better than the tragedy of Barbaro's shattered leg. Barbaro DID make one think of Secretariat in Ken Derby! I won't watch the Preakness - tooo much suffering! I think Secretariat was a PHYSICAL PHENOMENON; he hasn't been matched yet.

No,they are not sent into slaughter. When racehorses retire, they are sometimes sold. As for the colts, they will be put up for stud and live out the rest of their lives like a normal horse. My friend owns an ex-racer.

I was watching the Kentucky Derby when he won. As well as the Preakness when he broke down. May he rest in peace with the rest of all the other great racehorses before him. And may his spirit keep running on the tracks where he heard his speed song that doesn't play no longer.

Sharon, some people do care about ex-racers. The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation helps find ex-racers good homes. I have a TRF horse who has turned out to be a fantastic hunter, pleasure, and trail horse (TBs are versatile athletes). He's got a home for life with me. Look up the TRF, and support their work!!

Anyone know the status of Nicanor? Last I heard he is going through a growth spurt.....but shouldnt he be running soon? I wish I could find out some way.

From what I've heard, he's still growing and is rather immature, plus he got a little sore in training so they eased it up a bit with him. He should be back to galloping soon and Matz is considering starting him in October. Barbaro only started twice at 2, in October and November, so we could see Nicanor then or this spring. No point in rushing him. :o)

You can log on to the Daily racing form web site and log in for free and use the option to let you know about certain horses..training,race dates and results..They will email you on anytime they get information..All you need is the horse's name...Brisnet also does this for free.They call it stable alert...

you must be very young...seeing how his owners hailed from Hunter/Jumper people, and the Jacksons had the money to keep him alive as long as they did, no one on earth would have ever taken "our boy" from the Jacksons. Besides, even after his multiple surgeries he was left with walking taking alot out of him, let alone would he ever have been able to trot again. But I do agree with you on one point? Every hunter/jumper in the world must have had that dream of having him in their own stable.

i think it's funny, around 2004 there was Smarty Jones who won 2 jewels of the Triple Crown, the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. Barbaro only won the Kentucky Derby, but he's more famous, Barbaro captured the hearts of Americans! He's a horse in a million.
