Ah, what a legend - like so many for that era - better and more genuine than some of the artificial "crap" played these days!! But then I am pushing 50 after all!! :-)
Back in the day.... there were singers who could sing. Most of today's singers scream or screech or yowl instead of singing. Listen to the singers of the 1940s and 1950s. And a few from the 1960s. Their voices were vocal instruments, played beautifully. It's so sad that today's youngsters almost never hear such glorious music. Yes, Neil Diamond is a legend, along with Johnny Cash and a few others.
Hello Corpsemunger, There are thousands of musicians & singers, whom never get that special {15 min} spot light to shine upon them and their talent. I agree with you. That's was my point. Answering wisky2roxy. In my reply to you, from Mozart to Modern music. today, Adele regardless of her age, can sing, write and compose music. Music is what connects one heart and mind to sound and beat. I am not locked into a place of one type of music. Sounds like you are. Can we agree, Neil was/is great.
Speaking as a child of the 90's...I was brought up with the impression that Neil Diamond was a phony. I heard this song in the car listening to the oldies station one night, as I am inclined to do. It blew my mind. And continues to do so. I had to google "holly holy" to find out who it was... brilliant performance of a brilliant song by a brilliant performer in his prime.
i was born in 1975 and ive listend to neil since i was a baby. i love you neil you are a legned and you keep rising higher and higher. i loved you in the Jazz Singer.
A proven talent that needs no apologies for his body of work. A great poet and lyricist with a unique sound and this son, especially on Hot August Night shows him at is best.
I think he sounds best towards the end of a tour when his voice is just a bit gruff. Not that he ever sound bad, Just that touch of roughness is the best of the best.
Yes go ahead and make fun of Neil, Elvis, etc. Maybe in their later years they became a bit pretentious and comical. But truth is there is more talent in their snot than 99% of today's so-called "musicians"
@whisky2roxy You're wrong - 99% of todays musicians are truly talented... there is a 1% who are people like Justin Bieber ect.
There are thousands of brilliant Classical, Folk, Rock, Pop ect all over the world - you can't just take some of the worst people in the charts and think they are a microcosm of modern music.
In 1971 there was also a ton of crappy music around... but you only want to remember the best musicians.
Sure there's a lot of great technical artists today, but no creative music. I haven't heard anything remotely new or interesting in rock/pop since the 70's. Yeah, a lot of flashy, technical musicians, playing the same rehashed, and now exceedingly boring, musical styles. I'm guessing you're young and did not live through the 50's, 60's and 70's; otherwise I suspect you would agree.
Hello, Your wrong ! I grew up in the 70's, I listened to FOLK, POP, ROCK, OPERETA ROCK, COUNTRY, CLASSICAL and some of the best dancing music-DISCO. MOST OF TODAY'S SINGERS ARE {singing} BUT HAVE NO TALENT JUST GIMMICK. @whisky2roxy I didn't see a comment making fun of Neil and I don't think he has become pretentious in any way....have seen him several times in concert over the years and he always puts on an amazing show. But if anyone DID imply that or make fun of him (or Elvis who had a beautiful voice and charisma out the wazoo)we can just figure they are either Britney/Bieber fans or their mama dropped them on their head when they were a baby....or both....and feel sorry for them.
wet to see him with a girlfriend in the 80's ( thought he was a chick artist) he blew me away. So talanted, come to think of it she was talanted also. Great artist
I would compare this performance/concert to Elvis in Hawaii. Everything seems to click here. Vocal, look, feel, background singers, and just the way it was filmed give it that perfect performance. Just on a smaller scale.
i don't know... as the years went by neil's live version got so far away from the single release.. even this just after the release does the same. the 45 release is simply straight forward and powerful and speaks for itself without adding twists and vocal contortions. but, i have always liked his stuff.. but not live.
@akflights ... lol.. i knew i should not have made any innuendo of a negative comment about neil. when he hit the scene with 'i thank ... night time', i immediately became a fan. that was the summer after i graduated from h.s. i couldn't wait until the next single came out. everything he did was just great. and 'holly holy' was the prize song to me. obviously my fav song. i'm a fan of his music and i'm not drunk, lol. i simply prefer his studio recording over live performance. :)

@2stankornot2stank yes he didhe has written like 500 songs, he has over 42 top 40 hits, rooted in rock n roll and folk style music. He goes in this yr into the rock n roll hall of fame. He is a icon of time tested hits that continues to grab people just like yourself, if there is a negative to neils career is he got off the rock map in the 80s and 90s and got a little soft. He came back and started writing and putting on the guitar again- He is in the top 10 ever in Writng IMO
I'm about to listen to one of the most fantastic artists ever doing one of the most fantastic songs ever, and a pop-up for "dating Chinese girls" appears at the bottom of the video. YouTube use to be a cool place to hang out but like all the other filth institutions in this sick world, it's turned itself into an advertisement for disgusting filth and garbage. Hey YOUTUBE? Get out of our faces. You're all scum. You screwed up our musical selections with WB and UMG for the sake of dirty money.
@pirateofthecarabiner I pay a monthy charge to access what's here. It's not advertising that bugs me. It's the genre of it allowed. C'mon, an ad about dating Chinese women at the beginning of a powerful piece of music with a gospel flare? Don't ask such questions before taking a few seconds to consider why I said what I did. It's a fair concern. Neil and most artists on here deserve better. Put an ad like that on some skateboard vid but putting it here is proof YouTube needs a brain cleanse.
@tyme4mike Fair enough, I don't know that the ads that pop up are particularily chosen to fit the content of the videos, Again it's a free service, I find stuff I thought I'd never find again. A pop up which I can close in an instant is a small price to pay.
@MrJuanlennon--It is a plague sweeping the earth. The real plague is people like you who are ignorant, bigoted, and hateful. You are the hell that we are living in. We never made any choices. To say we were born this way, is lost on people like you. Even I wish you health and happiness, and never HIV or AIDS. My friend and I had broken up for 6 months. His behavior was to make sure I never got it.
He looks so young here..........he was young here. I think he looks a little like Tom Hanks in this. I love this song......one of my favorites. I saw him live in 2002. Wonderful performance.
Very haunting song for me. My bf loved this song, and gave me a copy. He was a beautiful man. A swimmer on the SMU swim team. He became HIV positive, and he was a member of the SF Sheriff's Dept. He shot himself in the head. This plague has to be cured.
I don't care if this was recorded 17 years before I was born, he's still super sexy. I might go see him in March and I am SO EXCITED!!!! I will probably be one of the youngest people there, singing along knowing all the words, but I will also be the coolest kid in the city that night!
@sdv0018 I hear ya dude..only thing I don't understand in this video is how reserved the BBC people are during this concert..this song was MADE to be screamed by the audience. I saw Neil live about 6 years ago and we almost tore the place down during this song...righteous rock!
@trunk516 at least on the album he does scream it!!! my husband sings and this is the last song he will sing because it so hard to sing it ruins his voic.
Its about time this man got recognized by the RRHOF. His 1966-72 peak period was more R & R than quite a few of the acts currently there (Think Madonna, Abba, Grandmaster Flash, Percy Sledge, RUN-DMC, etc). Even entering his 70's he still draws enthusiastic crowds whereever he goes.
This was some great stuff. Easy to forget Neil started a humble singer songwriter w/guitar!
There's still good music out there, but unless it's being promoted by the MTV/Rolling Stone Corporate Machine as officially approved as hip it can't buy promotion. Gotta look under the radar Mak Tub, Bare Naked Ladies, Cat Power, Incognito, Band of Heathens... Support local/indie artists folks & maybe we'll get organic music by real artists again!
I am 38 years old now and i saw him in concert when i was about 8 in Louisville, Ky. I thought he was the king of music then as i still do today. You the man Neil!
After watching a show full of talentless hacks on the VMA's tonight, I had to rush back here and listen to some quality, not auto tuned, REAL music. Thanks, Neil, for being the timeless, professional artist that you are. :)
@chicka321 it is his real name---- neil leslie diamond--when I was young and saw his cover to hot august night I thought the guy was the king of the music world! he is damn good!
A thousand years from now, no scratch that, thousands of years from now his songs will still be played and much of the stuff done today will not be heard in fifty years. Neil is just that amazing!
i bought his alblum as a child could.Cause saw him on TV and loved this song.Sung so greatly.

This plague has to be cured.
tahoemack 1 year ago
@tahoemack Correct behavior and responsible choices will cure your plague.

I saw Neil live about 6 years ago and we almost tore the place down during this song...righteous rock!
trunk516 1 year ago
@trunk516 at least on the album he does scream it!!! my husband sings and this is the last song he will sing because it so hard to sing it ruins his voic.

Youth tends to bring the passion and the emotions out, doesn't it....

Its about time this man got recognized by the RRHOF. His 1966-72 peak period was more R & R than quite a few of the acts currently there (Think Madonna, Abba, Grandmaster Flash, Percy Sledge, RUN-DMC, etc). Even entering his 70's he still draws enthusiastic crowds whereever he goes.

hmmmm, i find this music rather boring and sounds so dusty oldfashioned.
the guitarplay is also very dull, nothing happens

I remember a lot about Neil Diamond...
cause I had his album Neil Diamond Love At the Greek Theatre..
reminds me of my memories in secondary school early 80s..
ajijasin 1 year ago 3
This was some great stuff. Easy to forget Neil started a humble singer songwriter w/guitar!
There's still good music out there, but unless it's being promoted by the MTV/Rolling Stone Corporate Machine as officially approved as hip it can't buy promotion. Gotta look under the radar Mak Tub, Bare Naked Ladies, Cat Power, Incognito, Band of Heathens... Support local/indie artists folks & maybe we'll get organic music by real artists again!
Peace music fans!

After watching a show full of talentless hacks on the VMA's tonight, I had to rush back here and listen to some quality, not auto tuned, REAL music. Thanks, Neil, for being the timeless, professional artist that you are. :)
