Warning! Listening to this just once could cause it to be stuck in your head (see guitar solo, lyrics and organ especially during 3rd verse) and therefore be the last thing you hear at night and the first thing you hear in the morning!!! Best if played at maximum volume!
Would you believe that I went to a vendor in LA (where I live) and I bought Her Satanic Majesties Request by The Rolling Stones, & this album on vinyl, and he gave me this one for free? haha true story.
This album is truly great. Many tracks were recrded in one take.Keith Reid's lyrics are obserervational and if you notice the hammond played by Matthew Fisher at certain points picking up the lyrics urgency to add to the tension eg the ambulance using the repeated notes thro' the Lesley speaker.... Rotating speakercabs used with the instrument. What a lovely album Phil Tunes>
I really like this song, but I think don't understand it. I am not a native english speaker, so looked up the lyrics and I know what the words mean, but I don't think that I got the message. Please can someone shortly sum it up?
poppin them thangs just sounds like this a bit, but this aint sampled, poppin them thangs notes sound a bit different and theres a note wich doesnt exists here, amazing song tought
And some Arabian also ran impersonates a watering can! Keith Reid could right lyrics like shakespeare...And some Arabian sheik most grand impersonates a hot dog stand...
My Dad sent this to us 4 Xmas listening with the note: "Honey, these guys really were up there with the Beatles and Stones. Maybe better. Listen carefully to the 16-bar guitar solo and brilliant drumming and keyboards throughout. This was their first and best album. Merry Christmas Camel!" :)
Oops! I should mention that the site Beyond the Pale is found at procolharum - usual punction mark - com (there are other similarly named sites I cannot vouch for)
Procol Harum at their best, already superb at this early stage in their career. The piano and organ powerfully interacting and enhancing each other, BJ's confident leading role, Gary's great vocals. Amazingly, Gary at 60-something, sings better now than he ever did! Thank you very much for posting this rare gem!!!
I certainly am! Did you know that Salvo Records have been remastering all the early Procol catalogue up to Something Magic? The sound quality is outstanding!
If anyone is interested, check out the fan site Beyond the Pale.
What an overlooked band; lost in time for most of us but those who were lucky enough to be exposed to P.H. knew we were hearing something beyond the norm.
Yeah, B.J was an amazing drummer. If your a big fan, he did session work on Joe Cocker's debut album. He's actually playing on 'With A Help From My Friends'.
What a great group! These guys were totally unique. Fabulous music and incredible lyrics.
Robin Trower is the groups id, with his powerful, screaming sound, like a dentists drill. Matthew Fisher's powerful hammond and Gary Brooker's soulful vocals.

@KingofMars62 saw them in Central Park's Waldman Skating Rink, which is small, in the summer of 1970-for one dollar.
They were awesome, but no Whiter Shade Of Pale-closed with Repent Walpurgis-which I guessed they would do.
