I believe that all he did was interview lay people while he did not appeal to anyone with a background in the study of Theology or Philosophy of God. He went straight to the people who know of God by believe and not by reason.

I liked the message of the movie but I think it was done in a bit of an offensive way for the people who appeared in it. The footage was clearly manipulated to make some moments look funnier or more awkward than they actually were. Don't get me wrong, most of these religious freaks are ridiculous, but I think the movie would have had more credibility had they held back on the dishonest editing for the sake of comedy. Other than that, I liked it. But I'm a biased agnostic.

The editor had to work to make some of them seem funny and awkward, yes. I'm 100% convinced that the unedited footage of some of these interviews would not have been as funny. Watch the movie from an editor or filmmaker's perspective and you'll see that some of the footage is manipulated to get a laugh...probably because some of these people would have been too lame otherwise. That's my only complaint about the movie.
i don't doubt anything you're saying and it seems actually like something they would do. but like you said, it probably would have been a little boring without entertaining edits :). also, i don't think it hurt their credibility at all since, at least from my perspective, they had none to begin with. so i think it was sort of inconsequential editing, at least in the sense that it didnt take away from any "valid" arguments these people might have had, if that makes sense

Logically, the magnitude and power of the Universe dictates that something at least as powerful must have created it, as every reaction needs an initial and equal action. To suggest that the Universe was without a creator is to suggest an infinite Universe, and that the Big Bang Theory is wrong, which is a HUGE thing to say.
God as a catalyst of the universe is pretty reasonable. Most claim that a god(s) created the universe and then stuck around to govern it and answer prayers.
However, it does not follow that the universe required a god to create it.

Fair enough. The Big Bang happened, that's fine. If you want to define that as a god, then fair enough, we agree. Most people would define a god as an intelligent being with a personality that stayed to intervene with the universe and establish relationships with people. There is no decent evidence for this second kind of a god.
Then again, it's logical to assume that God (Big Bang), set the whole Universe into motion and thus initiating what some would call "God's Plan." Sure, there is no God that we can pray to and ask for help (impossible), but that doesn't mean there's no relationship. 2 words: Butterfly Effect. I find it impossible that our actions don't affect the whole Universe and that the initial Act of Creation doesn't affect our actions today, however indirectly - but it's still a relationship nonetheless.

It's known we're all made of the same 200 or so elements, basically a mixture of atoms reacting to the initial action that created the Universe. This really means that nothing is truly "alive;" that they're just a complex "mixture" of molecules. This logically disproves "souls," therefore "heaven" and "hell," and ultimately a judgemental, prayerworthy "God!" :D

I dunno, all their work on the origins of the Universe looks to me like they've already had their mind up on whether God exists or not. I was simply saying that for anything to exist, something must have created it. The Universe seems so harmonious and systematic yet to even begin to explain its processes accurately takes us to the limits of our imagination. To create something almost infinitely complex would take just as infinite power, something Godly. You seem like one of those people who ask, "If a God exists, then what created it." - God is whatever's at the beginning. IT has to be there, otherwise we wouldn't.
For something to exist, something must have created it...Uh...Your response to the argument against this is that something didn't need to be created? Don't you see how silly that is?
So, you're saying nothing can exist without being created at some point.. yet you claim God wasn't created. That's not a full circle mate.. regardless, when things started to exist, they were not at all infinity complex, they started out super simple and grew more complex over time.. even if God created existence, he didn't make it complex to begin with.
In saying that God wasn't created, I'm demonstrating the kind of power it possesses. As for infinitely complex, things did start out infinitely complex. Everything that exists now came from the same things that existed at the very beginning. Nothing "grew," they just got recycled and mixed billions of times. There is the same amount of energy in the Universe now as there ever was and ever will be.
Very true, that's exactly what happened. A bunch of simple little lego blocks got mixed around for billions of years and out came something complex. Nothing complex was consciously created.
Energy CANNOT be created nor destroyed, but it CAN be converted/transformed/etc into different energy.

If I sit in the drivers seat of a car, that doesn't make me an Indy driver. I work with Catholic youth and young adults and see this far too often. Eventually, they become prey for those who distort Catholicism. Samson, it's good to question things. Just make sure when you question that you seek the real answers and not a distortion. @3275Dan, this film is not really true if you think about it. I agree with the church being corrupt, but Bill Maher is assuming that because the church is wrong that God doesn't exist. I don't follow THAT math.
If the churches ARE wrong and corrupt (which I believe they are), then they have nothing whatsoever to do with the reality of God.
Therefore we shouldn't judge God based on what churches do.

I liked the message of the movie but I think it was done in a bit of an offensive way for the people who appeared in it. The footage was clearly manipulated to make some moments look funnier or more awkward than they actually were. Don't get me wrong, most of these religious freaks are ridiculous, but I think the movie would have had more credibility had they held back on the dishonest editing for the sake of comedy. Other than that, I liked it. But I'm a biased agnostic.

The editor had to work to make some of them seem funny and awkward, yes. I'm 100% convinced that the unedited footage of some of these interviews would not have been as funny. Watch the movie from an editor or filmmaker's perspective and you'll see that some of the footage is manipulated to get a laugh...probably because some of these people would have been too lame otherwise. That's my only complaint about the movie.

i don't doubt anything you're saying and it seems actually like something they would do. but like you said, it probably would have been a little boring without entertaining edits :). also, i don't think it hurt their credibility at all since, at least from my perspective, they had none to begin with. so i think it was sort of inconsequential editing, at least in the sense that it didnt take away from any "valid" arguments these people might have had, if that makes sense

A thing of unfathomable power responsible for the creation of the Universe? That's my definition of a God, and also a fitting description of the Big Bang!

Then again, it's logical to assume that God (Big Bang), set the whole Universe into motion and thus initiating what some would call "God's Plan." Sure, there is no God that we can pray to and ask for help (impossible), but that doesn't mean there's no relationship. 2 words: Butterfly Effect. I find it impossible that our actions don't affect the whole Universe and that the initial Act of Creation doesn't affect our actions today, however indirectly - but it's still a relationship nonetheless.

It's known we're all made of the same 200 or so elements, basically a mixture of atoms reacting to the initial action that created the Universe. This really means that nothing is truly "alive;" that they're just a complex "mixture" of molecules. This logically disproves "souls," therefore "heaven" and "hell," and ultimately a judgemental, prayerworthy "God!" :D

I dunno, all their work on the origins of the Universe looks to me like they've already had their mind up on whether God exists or not. The fact that they're working towards it shows that they already believe in God, and that they just want to find out what God is (which nobody knows). I happen to think that trying to explain our origins is a waste of time, but I'm also fully supportive of the ongoing quest for knowledge and new information, which is aka science.

Wrong. Albert Einstein was frustrated when people accused him of believing in a god. He was an atheist, as is Stephen Hawking and every other respected scientist. Higher education, especially scientific education is strongly associated with disbelief in a god.

I was simply saying that for anything to exist, something must have created it. The Universe seems so harmonious and systematic yet to even begin to explain its processes accurately takes us to the limits of our imagination. To create something almost infinitely complex would take just as infinite power, something Godly. You seem like one of those people who ask, "If a God exists, then what created it." - God is whatever's at the beginning. IT has to be there, otherwise we wouldn't.

Everything that exists now came from the same things that existed at the very beginning. Nothing "grew," they just got recycled and mixed billions of times. There is the same amount of energy in the Universe now as there ever was and ever will be.

But, energy CAN be created. I think you're confusing energy with matter.
Matter cannot be created nor destroyed.
Energy is the result of matter in motion.
At least that's the way I understood it.

No man, I know what matter and energy are.
Energy CANNOT be created nor destroyed, but it CAN be converted/transformed/etc into different energy.
Lets say you are cold and you drink some hot shit. You are not creating the energy that is getting your molecules moving around and all that, you are just transferring the energy from the shit you drank into your body.
This also works with matter.
Unless new shit has come to light in Thermodynamics.

Energy: In physics, energy is a scalar physical quantity that describes the amount of work that can be performed by a force.
Matter: Matter is the substrate from which physical existence is derived, remaining more or less constant amid changes.
So in other words. Energy is can be CREATED out of Matter's activities. It is Matter you're thinking of, not Energy.
