I wish I could understand Cesars energy theory more. I do positive reinforcement training which works wonders for us. Ive seen things I dont like from Cesar but there must be some logic. I've tried his books too, but found they revolve around the theory and dont really explain it. Any chance you can try to explain it to me?
I have learned more from Cesar Millan than from any other dogtrainer on this planet. Glad you used his name as he deserves to be mentioned over and over.
@TakerBride777 maybe you could care less but to your dog it's very important, at least to it for them. walking with the packleader is a primal activity that means so much to them.
I personally think the dog has a decision. Is the person who is working for money happier than thou who is working for happiness? I train my dog to love me because I am good company and because he feels good about his work. Yes, it's possible! Ask your dog to sit and clap and say, "Bravo!" And then post back.
uh huh. I have a so-called working dog. They work. Just like you do - I suppose you work. so, do you want to tell your boss, that you will now work because you trust him and love, but you don't need a pay check?
Now, you post also reflect how much you don't know about positive training methods. Treats are used to train. But then should be gradually reduced to almost none or none at all. Granted, many people don't do this. Also, treats are just one method of reward. Play is also a reward.
I WILL however see if I can get a copy of that book you recommended, I am always open for suggestions. I can't promise it will convince me, but I will see what this person believes and if I think it seems good. No one can claim to know the whole truth about animals! But don't you think cesar knows "some" about dogs too? Read his history! :)
My dog wlals behind me, with me and in front of me. If I want her to change her walking style I tell her "leash" which means do not go more than a leash length away. Or I hold a target hand for her to touch left or right side. On or off leash. I have never, ever jerked a leash and I do not use any kind of collar. She's in a shoulder harness. Clucker trained according to (among other) Karen Pryor with no jerking of leash.
I don't jerk the leash, since the leash is always loose, i just tighten it, which it even does just by her going in front of me. She is allowed to sniff and play and run free and pee, but as nich666 explains it, only when i allow it. This is because when I walk her, I want her to get mental stimulation and not just physical. When she heels she has to concentrate on walking straight forward, not pass me, and not smelling eveything, so they have to concentrate!
Walking is not playtime where they can do whatever they want. It's about exercise and diciplin. Besides: sure I can teach her to heel on command, but then you always have to reward the obedience of the command, AND the dog is only obedient because the dog gets something out of it. When we walk out the door she knows right away that we walk next to each other.
The reason for correction is that she ISNT TRAINED! It's not a command! It's a rule! If she breaks it for some reason i just tell her NO (stay with me) if she wants to go meet some other dog, or something. I just tell her that I'm in charge of the situation and I say that we don't (if that's the case). Because I DO believe in hierarchies. I think it is obvious that it exists, in humans too! Why would Cesars methods work so much and make so much sense if that wasnt the case?
Everyone chooses to believe what they want. I choose his way, and before my dog was a pain in the *** and now I think everyday how did I get the best dog there is?.
Why do you need to jerk on the leash and say no If you dog is "trained" to walk behind you, she should walk behind you without correction. Why is she not allowed to do the normal dog "thing" and sniff her world? A dog lives by it's nose, yet you do not let her use it.
because walking on a leash has nothing to do with sniffing unless the dog is told to do so. I walk my dog on heel and then after a while of her being good I say "OKAY!" and she is aloud to sniff pee socilize ect... she knows this command and preforms a good heel to get the reward
I though you were a CM devotee. You do know, that wolves do not have Alpha hierarchies, do not live in packs. that they live in families in which the breeding wolves are the parents. That they do NOT do an alpha roll unless they are going to kill another animal. If not, check out here on YouTube L. David Mech, the best known Wolf expert and the one who erroneously coined the phrase "Alpha Wolf". He reacnts this phrase on YouTube.
I think your dog should obey you because it trusts you and respects you and not because it will get a treat och playtime. It's so much easier the first way, but some think its cruel or something. A said: you choose your own belief.
@musicofnote1 why are acting so negative..? If you don't like it..don't watch it..that's it..If you believe on what you know, then look for it on youtube for you to watch..people these days..tsk..tsk..

Of course my dog wlaks at "heel" when given the command, but at the Obedience position: her shoulder at my leg, head turned up looking at me. And since there is neither an Alpha animal nor a pack, there is also no "rule" of the pack saying that a member walks behind the Alpha. You should also check out the present state of real science, google "100 Siliest Things People Say About Dogs. Check out her bibliographies and her bio. Unfortunately she doesn't have a TV show.
Just one more thing, this video is from when my dog and I had just started "heeling". She wasn't 100% sure that I was 100 % that she had to walk besides me, so she tested me. Now my dog is 19 months and I almost never have to correct her, that's the beauty - it gets easier and easier the more you do it! She is always calm at the walks and looks really satisfied to follow me, she doesn't have to worry and make decisions. In return I proctect her against potential dangers like unleashed dogs ect.
Congrats-- what a relief, isn't it? My "powerful breed" shepherd was a piece of work until I realized she just needed a pack leader! Gotta love Cesar!
FINALLY! Someone who is sane and understands his methods and applies them correctly. You SHOULDbe bothered how your dog walks. It should be to heel.
