I am soo confused man, I have been follwing your led build, and it looks like you were using custom leds and now this tank your showing is only showing the gu10 versions with sockets in what looks to be a parrell installation? Argh, where is the video of the custom build you had with your heat snks and custom drivers?
And why do you use the T5?
Other non-Diy sets are using reds, and clam not to need other lights, like the t5 for holes in lighting spectrums....
have you taken any PAR readings with this fixture on? i know the cree LEDs are intense but i would be interested ing seeing how intense they really are
Awesome videos, I just finished my own LED DIY project from rapid LED over my 29g. I really love the colors you get with them as well. I think my favorite is when I only have moonlights or just the blues on, my clowns look like they are black and white. I also have CW, NW, RB and B in my setup just the vary the wavelengths a little bit.
Dude, ur running 400 watt mhs??? I'm running two 65 watt cf! And they do the job right! Ive montis, zoas, shrooms, dirdsnests and many more! And all are doing great over my 29 gallon!
how do you think 2 of the 12bulb fixtures would fair over a 29 gallon thats 30inchs long 12 wide and 18? deep. Sps zoanthid and ricordeas. Trying to move away from my 400 watt mh, makes way to much heat and evap.
hi i was planning on doing an led lighting system for my 210 gallon tank i want to get to 48 led packs on for each half and i was wondering if you would recommend getting 4 heatsinks like yours that are 6 inches wide and 9 inches long and set them up the same way has you or do you think 4 36 inch long by 1.1 inches wide heatsink running longways across my tank would work better
i have been hearing that sps corals hardly grow with leds that other coral is fine with LED but sps are better to get halides. is that the same with you how much growth are you seeing on your sps corals under the LED light
@1mkwiet They say leds not work for Plant tanks yet either. I made them myself and they do BETTER then the T5 the hardest plants even! :))) Much stronger and natural colours too!
I only wondered, how did you determine how many watt or amount of leds to use?
I want to make one for a bigger tank, and I not sure about the total output....
@enavarro715 CREE LED arent just any type of LED man there the best and better then MH you should look at eco tech marine there latest light fixture the radion i think it is and uses these same LEDs in theme proven and reviewed by MR.saltwatertankTV check out his videos as well
so can i replace my actinic tubes with blue LED will it give me the same glow from the corals ... and if i install LED white then can i remove the T5 54w which i'm using currently ???
@319PurpleHaze so you're basically asking if you can replace your T5 lights with LED's? the answer to that is yes and no. You can replace it with the right type of LED's.....either a DIY high power setup or a proven reef safe pre-made product.
Love your tank. I'm not really into DIY stuff, as I am a college student and don't have the time, money, or knowledge to do it. However, I would like to get some advice on different lighting for my tank of puffers. I would like to make the yellow on the top of their heads pop a little, and the flourescent bulb I have now isn't doing that. I have a flouresecent hood, but I was wondering what color would be best on my tank? Thanks!
Hey, Thanks for the quick replie. Also how many leds do i need for my 90 gallon, i was thinking of buying the AI sol blues or the vertex? How many AI sols would i need?
Hey, i love to see all your videos and your beautiful aquarium! I have a 90 gallon aquarium to and i am woundering how you like the LEDS? Do you like them better then the t5s also how is the growth of the corals? Do the leds seem brighter the humen eye compared to the t5? Also what has better color the leds or the t5s? Thanks srry for all the questions! Brian
@ballerbrian4u Ok I'll try to answer your questions in sequence.
1) love LED's
2) Much better than T5's and never really have to replace the bulbs. I do like the T5's fiji purp though. Growth with the LED's has doubled the growth I got from 8 T5's in half the time. But that's not just cause the intensity, but also the type of photo the LED's provide.
3) yes they can be super bright, mine are set 1/3rd what they can do because they're so powerful.
@jsegis 1 charger is fine for multiple drivers.....I used 1 for 4, and I've seem people use 1 for up to 12....if you do that I suggest using a terminal block to organize your connections.
i think you did a beautiful job on your lights. I do have one question for you, did you ever think of / do you regret not using any red leds? I have read mixed reviews on using them, and if there is any true advantage to having them. I guess if they were used they could be used for a complete sunrise to sunset display of the lights. Also i noticed you used optics on some leds and no optics on others. Overall would you say the optics are needed or no?
@chevyrulzs2010 reds.....I may in my next build, but as you say there's mixed reviews of their actual usefullness. optics aren't always needed if your fixture if close to the water level and your tank is shallow enough. I partly took the optics off cause the fixture is close and the corals were bleaching cause it was too intense.
hey dude i need help.. my sump aint going so well. return pump is to strong and the tube doesnt keep syphon when u turn the valve =[ and everyday i have to spend time adjusting it . please help =]
I was curious what happened to the video of you finishing the project? It went from pt 3 with a set of led's on heatsinks to done and mounted. Also curious what you spent on the project and why you felt the need for t5's on top of the led's. I'm just starting to plan a reef tank and thought about led lighting. Great videos and great tank
awesome job! youve inspired me to do my own LED setup. im on to the research part of it now. thank you very much. very informative and nice setup. you da man
You said you're running 24 Crees from each 48W driver. You should only be running 13 to 15 LEDs per driver. According to the Cree spec sheet, the forward voltage for each LED should be between 3.3V at 350 milliamps, and 3.7V at 1,000 milliamps. Dividing 48V by 3.3Volts per LED, you get 15 LEDs, and dividing 48V by 3.7V yields 13 LEDs.
@crit21 In that case, you should adjust the total voltage to 43.2V to optimize things. That's 3.6V per LED, which will match the .9 amp current, according to the Cree XR-E data sheet.
hey 1mkwiet hows ur tank doing ? haha i havent talked to u in a while. my tank is still doing great and its almost been one year ! thanks for all the help u gave me =)
Great tank, I"m looking to get a identical set up with the coast to coast and because of your videos possibly LED lighting. I like the whirley birds but I'm not handy with power tools, so I'll probly have to skip them :)
Thanks to all for the positive comments. Hopeful my next video's will be a little higher caliber.....these were hard to shoot cause I'm not 100% sure what I was talking about.
I have one very bright blue LED light I got off a pen. It's so bright, you can light up a room with it. I put it over my tank and it makes all the corals look radioactive. Crazy cool.
I also have the same problem when making videos of my tanks. My Sony Cybershot just does not do the tank or corals justice when the blues are on, especially on my 30 gallon nano with new T5 lighting. In person, it's a whole other ball game, and the colors of the corals look amazing. On this video, your tank looks purple but I can only imagine how awesome it looks in person. I wish you had shown briefly what the lights looked like in full power.
yes wow that is a beautiful lighting set up i am going to try this my self i know how to do wiring semi well from my car audio and some house wiring but it shouldn't be that hard to try this my self
ive been doing alooot of reading but i was waiting for someone to do a diy for the led's so i think imma go try it myself now thanks for all the imput thru out all the vid's keep em comming
Yeah youre right you cant pick up the colors great but i can imagine what it looks like and i can tell it looks good. Cant wait to see how everything responds when fully aclimated. Great job! im hoping to do leds soon too.
how much did it cost to make the entire fixture?
