As far as physical damage goes, the Lipo fails with a more spectacular but less dangerous (still very dangerous) extremely hot burst of flame. I've seen other batteries literally explode like grenades. I'm not sure of any other effects in a lipo explosion though outside the fire so I can't say which is more dangerous.

I don't know how electronics companies have gotten away with using lithium batteries (both ion and polymer). Both are FUCKING DANGEROUS in uncontrolled environments, especially lithium polymer) and these companies should be forced to switch back to the safer Nickel Batteries. While they to have a few drawbacks, there are still many advantages to using Nickel over Lithium
