Yeah, our problems are down here and there always will be problems down here, but if there is anything to occupy ourselves with to accomplish something as a species it's the extraterrestrial. NASA pays for itself, they give us inventions that can apply to our daily lives, and with enough research we may be mining asteroids or pure limitless solar energy in the future, but most of all they give our species itself a way forward.
A revealing speech. It's the argument that if we throw money at something it will become better which is dubious. If NASA's purpose is simply to act as carrot on a stick for aspiring engineers then we should discard it altogether. NASA has had it's moments but it would be wise to let it die peacefully and let private enterprises arise in its place.
"America is fading" PFEH, what? The US is arguably beggining to peak right as we speak. Sure, theres a problem with the economy, but there always is, but as it stands, the US is the LAST remaining super power in the world, and that only happened just recently. If this guy think the US is "fading", then that means NASA's already gone.
Watching and listening to Neil speak is like forgetting that it's your birthday, and then walking into an awesome surprise party that all of your friends pulled off perfectly.
I want to cry listening to this.....NASA had been something that inspired me and kept my dreams going for space exploration as we take our journey across the solar system and through the cosmos to these never explored world....but it all seem to come crumpling down...
Neil deGrasse Tyson - "OUR COLLECTIVE FREE TIME NEEDS TO SHIFT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE TO EDUCATION. WHETHER YOU'RE A YOUNG STUDENT OR FINISHED SCHOOL LONG AGO, GET OUT TO THE LIBRARY WHENEVER YOU CAN AND WORK HARD TO LEARN EVERYTHING YOU CAN ABOUT THIS WORLD. EACH INDIVIDUAL AND SOCIETY WILL BENEFIT FROM BEING ABLE TO SOLVE MORE PROBLEMS AND MAKE BETTER DECISIONS. EDUCATION IS AN AMAZING DISCOVERY PROCESS THAT REPAYS YOU ENDLESSLY."
That's his key point? We may get hit by an asteroid in the future? How about if I want to start an extraterrestrial mining company?
Even better, what if I want to start colonizing space because the planet's Already overpopulated?
Or even from a military perspective, like aircraft that can exit and reenter Earths atmosphere (which would give almost any country that has that dominance)
@Rensune I'm sorry bursting your Sci-Fi bubble, but we're not remotely close to anything of that magnitude, and to achieve something like that would take us at least a few decades after we(Human race) reach Mars.
Like deGrasse said, you must advance the frontier to somewhere like Mars, you must take steps to advance, and not jump over important steps, that will only lead to failure and demoralization.
I've always and forever will respect Dr. Neil Tyson. His speeches about everything always moved me and always made me think of the possibilities we could accomplish as humans.
I have to admit to wondering if NASA has all the answers to space travel. I'd like to see corporate interest as well....but what Dr. Tyson says here is right on the money!
This line tops one of the most articulate and passionate speeches in favor of NASA I have ever heard. Give me two days of prep. and a thousands monkeys on typewriters and I would be hard pressed to come up with something remotely close to what NGT does off the cuff here.
We need more people like his espousing the wonder and virtue of science in a country where ignorance and science denial is seen as a virtue in many places.
As cold as it sounds I still believe the western world is lacking in motivation, such as a new cold war. War has always pushed technology forward, and it might even be considered necessary. We need a new space race, so how about you Russians go team up with China, and lets push things forward.
I think most Americans would like NASA to be funded but our leaders have decided to bankrupt us and continue to spend a large chunk of our tax dollars to maintain a global empire using the military.
Just curious, why do most if not all AMerican president are all rich. Why don't we have poor but hard working people as president. I mean hard working people understand what the ordinary people need. Reply PLZ
@aznpride0 Just so you know, Barack Obama was not a rich kid. He was raised middle class and lower middle class by his divorced mother and grandparents in Hawaii. He was not handed his Ivy League education, he EARNED it. He is not one of the American Rich, like Bush was.
BTW, Clinton also came from humble beginnings as did Reagan and Carter. In fact, MOST American presidents come from hard-working, ordinary backgrounds.
@HybridD91 They also get 400,000 a year to be president. That alone makes you wealthy. But that is nothing compared to the speaking fees ($100,000 a day in many cases) and book rights that you haul in after leaving office (usually after being a piss poor president at that.)
We aren't lacking the technology or talent or money to achieve our goals (like sending people to Mars or building a next gen shuttle). The ONLY thing that is lacking, is the political will. Look at what we achieved during the space race, when the US was DETERMINED to be the first to set foot on the moon.
People like Bill Hicks and Neil Degrasse Tyson are all speaking directly from the heart. They are pulling from the fire that runs through the Universe. Messengers.

Sad state of affairs; our government prefers to send soldiers to die for oil in Iraq, Kuwait, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Libya - rather than set a date to land a NASA crew on Mars.
quite surprising isn't it... that a lot of ppl seems to think that NASA is useful for nothing but to launch payloads to space... never realizing that the tech they develop to make all of that possible is used today for daily life.
ppl take things for granted... and too few have dreams, NASA used to be able to ignite dreams on common ppl, and now they are underfunded...
I feel bad for the camera man trying to follow Dr. Tyson, constantly bobbing back and fourth, bending over. Its so funny, yet its nice because he is so passionate. What a great person.
Yes, people do no longer have the wonder and desire to go to space. But, there is a workaround. People are easily scared, and they have a reason to be scared, cause China is doing huge investments in research and space! The US is falling behind. Who ever controls space, controls everything. Even if you nuke China to oblivion, they could still control you from space. You better get your act together, space is truly the new frontier!
I'm sorry but we can do 10x more with unmanned flight then we can with the costs of manned flight. It is a fantasy for children. The private sector can look at manned space flight in the meantime. Robert Park has provided some excellent commentary on this subject.
but wait whats the point of going to mars? is it just to say we made it to mars? that just seems silly to me, spending billions of dollars on bragging rights.
Contact lenses. Safer glass. Long range communications. Artificial limbs. Computer technologies. Almost ALL water filtration systems... and tens of thousands of other things owe their debt to the creators and engineers at NASA.. to the hope of a shot at space. Thousands of engineers find themselves unemployed soon. Good luck to all of them.
.005 cents of every dollar goes to Nasa. If it means achieving fusion power, a mission to Mars, or unraveling the greatest secrets of the universe and our existence, I'll GLADLY through in a few more cents.
I agree with tysons views on almost all his subjects. So I also agree that its benefitial for mankind and its future to survive. And I also agree we have to work upon it right now!
I dont agree that this is somehow supposed to be nasas work.
Nasa spaceships (rockets) are like the steam locomotives in the familly of trains. 1 prototype, 1 company, utter polution and inefficiency.
The car came of the ground because 20companys start manufacturing them at once. Spaceflight today is nothing more
@narfpoit77 on an interview with professor kaku of new york university, he estimated that the first man on mars would be the #1 historical achievement for all of mankind, in all scientific, warfare, medical, etc for hundreds of thousands of years, some people just cant understand that. since 7th grade ive wanted to be involved in space, absolutely anything having to do with it.
Tyson is not a great orator but I got his point sharp and clear. This is what he means: I wanted to be an astronaut when I was much younger, but the UK doesn't have anything approaching manned space flight and space-flight stopped making headlines.
As the reality of what it takes to get into space set in my childhood dream vanished. If NASA was as prominent as it was during the moon landing era I might have kept on trying because I could see my heroes up there.
I wonder if he includes NASA's waste of millions of dollars on this week's shuttle mission to pay for astronauts to play with Legos in space? NASA's budget is way overblown for what it actually accomplishes. Like all federal agencies, it has grown it's budget all out of proportion to its usefulness. My generation was inspired by Neil Armstrong walking on the moon, not watching people play with children's toys on millions of dollars of taxpayer money.
Neil deGrasse Tyson is the most inspirational persona in the world to me. A month ago I had no clue what I wanted to do with my life. I was absolutely uninspired. I now know that I am going to dedicate my entire life to space and discovery. It is of so much importance. Dr. Tyson really helped me understand.
my father is getting laid off tomorrow from the Kennedy Space Center aka Nasa. if nasa doesnt get funded then the economy will get alot worse bc i think he said like 30,000 workers or something r getting laid off in 1 City that only has 43,000 people in it! i understand the shuttle program ending but Obama cancelled the Orion project in the middle of development and wasted $10 billion. everything is already built! just give nasa the money to continue it.
@ryaninflorida1 I feel you dude. I live in Daytona Beach, its all over the news how all of the lay offs are effecting people not just workers, respectfully, but the hotel, food, and tourism that Nasa brings to the state each launch. Its quite sad really.
I can't believe people actually take what this guy says to be great! What will going to Mars accomplish? Not much, I can tell you that. The only thing NASA is useful for right now is maintaining satellites in low earth orbit and various other things. Exploration is nowhere near a priority right now, and likely will not be in the next 50 years.
Space is nice, but it's not an issue at the moment.
@racergonemad99 The issue is bloated military spending and media-political machinery that enriches the lives of the top few percent of people in this country. If America could cut it's military spending, it would be able to fulfill all of its obligations domestically, and have enormous amounts to fund science and progress for all its citizens. But instead, we enact oil wars and spend money making weapons for dictators. NASA is important, but other things must also happen.
@racergonemad99 Racer, that's EXACTLY the point Dr. Tyson is making. You're fixed looking at the ground, not looking up, not looking towards the future... "The only thing NASA is useful for right now is maintaining satellites in low earth orbit and various other things." I like that line. I like it because you say "right now." You didn't say what NASA could be given the proper support, but you show that you see NASA could be doing something great. We need to get off this rock, see the universe.
@racergonemad99 What did going to the Moon accomplish? The technologies we'd have to research and develop to make it to Mars would spur economic growth and an increase in prosperity here at home, with those technologies also being capable of being applied to situations we face here on Earth, and in themselves spuring even more technologies. Technology drives economies.
@racergonemad99 experts in science, ALL FIELDS, say that the first man to step on mars, will be BY FAR the most substantial historical figure than anyone for atleast the next hundred thousand years. also, saying that going to mars accomplishes nothing is ignorant and stupid. going to mars would most likely start the mars project. the mars project is us trying to make mars habitable. think about that significance. another planet to inhabit in about 500 years. now tell me its useless.
It's not Obama's fault. It's the ignorance of the american people. If we had a higher scientific literacy rate, Obama wouldn't have cancelled the moon missions. The only reason he did it was to appease those who said we were wasting money.
More scientific literacy = more funding for NASA. That's where we need to get.
NASA is important, the Universe is our future. We can only stay on this planet for so long, this species is meant to go to the stars from the first day we looked up and wondered, what is up there..? This is our future. Stop Spending almost a Trillion dollars on weapons, Don't cut NASA.
@FreedomLiberty21 If NASA did some spring cleaning of its bureaucratic processes I'm sure it could pull off the mission for 1/4 of what they project they'll need.
I keep thinking of how Space X designed FROM SCRATCH the rockets and the Dragon spacecraft which is just as capable as the Orion capsule for a small fraction of what NASA did. And they did it in about 5 years, did a test flight too a few months ago.
Meanwhile NASA never finished orion after spending Billions of dollars.
@FreedomLiberty21 I actually think it can be done for a lot less than 2% of the budget. 10 billion is a reasonable figure, and that isn't even 1 percent.
@FreedomLiberty21 .001 percent of the budget will suffice. To run Nasa, it's about $2.00 per American. If we cut down the silly orbit trips (which we have no choice now due to no shuttle program), we could redirect all the money we are saving on fuel for those trips and put them towards a Mars mission. Hopefully my kids will see the day of a Mars landing. Would be nice if I could too. I have my doubts though. Not because it's hard, but because this country has it's head up it's ass.
I'll never stop kicking myself for missing this. NEVER.

@narfpoit77 on an interview with professor kaku of new york university, he estimated that the first man on mars would be the #1 historical achievement for all of mankind, in all scientific, warfare, medical, etc for hundreds of thousands of years, some people just cant understand that. since 7th grade ive wanted to be involved in space, absolutely anything having to do with it.
mikeyjs6 9 months ago

Dr. Tyson really helped me understand.

my father is getting laid off tomorrow from the Kennedy Space Center aka Nasa. if nasa doesnt get funded then the economy will get alot worse bc i think he said like 30,000 workers or something r getting laid off in 1 City that only has 43,000 people in it! i understand the shuttle program ending but Obama cancelled the Orion project in the middle of development and wasted $10 billion. everything is already built! just give nasa the money to continue it.
ryaninflorida1 11 months ago 2
@ryaninflorida1 I feel you dude. I live in Daytona Beach, its all over the news how all of the lay offs are effecting people not just workers, respectfully, but the hotel, food, and tourism that Nasa brings to the state each launch. Its quite sad really.

I can't believe people actually take what this guy says to be great! What will going to Mars accomplish? Not much, I can tell you that. The only thing NASA is useful for right now is maintaining satellites in low earth orbit and various other things. Exploration is nowhere near a priority right now, and likely will not be in the next 50 years.
Space is nice, but it's not an issue at the moment.
racergonemad99 11 months ago
@racergonemad99 You obviously missed the point, haven't you?
NwZ2 11 months ago
@racergonemad99 The issue is bloated military spending and media-political machinery that enriches the lives of the top few percent of people in this country. If America could cut it's military spending, it would be able to fulfill all of its obligations domestically, and have enormous amounts to fund science and progress for all its citizens. But instead, we enact oil wars and spend money making weapons for dictators. NASA is important, but other things must also happen.
scientrophic 10 months ago 8
@racergonemad99 Racer, that's EXACTLY the point Dr. Tyson is making. You're fixed looking at the ground, not looking up, not looking towards the future... "The only thing NASA is useful for right now is maintaining satellites in low earth orbit and various other things." I like that line. I like it because you say "right now." You didn't say what NASA could be given the proper support, but you show that you see NASA could be doing something great. We need to get off this rock, see the universe.
Reguba24 10 months ago 3
@racergonemad99 What did going to the Moon accomplish? The technologies we'd have to research and develop to make it to Mars would spur economic growth and an increase in prosperity here at home, with those technologies also being capable of being applied to situations we face here on Earth, and in themselves spuring even more technologies. Technology drives economies.
TechnomancerMorhion 10 months ago 5

NASA should have a human mission to Mars by 2020.
All it needs is 2-3% of the federal budget and the will to achieve seemingly impossible goals; like the Apollo Missions.
FreedomLiberty21 1 year ago 132
@FreedomLiberty21 If NASA did some spring cleaning of its bureaucratic processes I'm sure it could pull off the mission for 1/4 of what they project they'll need.
I keep thinking of how Space X designed FROM SCRATCH the rockets and the Dragon spacecraft which is just as capable as the Orion capsule for a small fraction of what NASA did. And they did it in about 5 years, did a test flight too a few months ago.
Meanwhile NASA never finished orion after spending Billions of dollars.
baillou2 1 year ago
@FreedomLiberty21 I actually think it can be done for a lot less than 2% of the budget. 10 billion is a reasonable figure, and that isn't even 1 percent.
baillou2 1 year ago
@FreedomLiberty21 .001 percent of the budget will suffice. To run Nasa, it's about $2.00 per American. If we cut down the silly orbit trips (which we have no choice now due to no shuttle program), we could redirect all the money we are saving on fuel for those trips and put them towards a Mars mission. Hopefully my kids will see the day of a Mars landing. Would be nice if I could too. I have my doubts though. Not because it's hard, but because this country has it's head up it's ass.
