  • beat them in 1936, beat them again in 1945.

  • And 22 years later during the Cold War, the first US sporting victory inside the Soviet Union was the upset victory over Soviet rowers of the Leningrad Trud Club by another 8 man crew from the same college- University of Washington, seen taking gold here in the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

  • fuck they rated high

  • Fairbairn wasn't around yet then? Poor backs...

  • since no one's pointed it out yet, this was taken from Leni Reifenstahl's Olympia

  • ..r.i.p. nazi heroes

  • old

  • Bow Down to Washington!!!!

  • That was the UW Huskies varsity eight winning the gold medal for the US.

    Go Sun Dodgers!

  • @TickTockJoe "Go Sun Dodgers!"...... And Go Husky Clipper!

  • yo dude at 2:14 head in the boat!!!

  • and at least these days you're not expected to give a Nazi salute when winning gold

  • Amerika!!!

  • and a couple of years later they would all be at war with eachother...

  • @Futureboy2026 the war had already started more or less thats why there was such big debates on wether or not to go to the olimpics

  • Were the shells made out of aluminum then? Lol at the coxswain at 1:28.

  • The next time one of my crew members complains about rigging or equipment, I'm going to show them this. haha. Thanks for posting!

  • Look how many people are supporting them..

  • nice video ! Technique has changed a lot over the years...it is amazing they could row so low (they have no space to go over their knees wile the recovering)

  • I don't understand how there can be a camera on the stroke man, surely the cameras would have been way too big and heavy? And you can't see the coxes camera from the stroke's (and vice versa)...suspicious

  • @ollieee12321 Well spotted! A lot of the film of this olympics was staged footage taken during training mixed with filming during actual competition. The audience at the time wasn't as educated in filming and cameras as we are now, so would just have accepted it. Also this was not really like a sports bulletin, it was released as a feature film, so it's trying to capture the spirit of the event as well as the actual results.

  • @ClydeRowing I feel like the crowd looks staged in parts too. times like 3:36

  • Way to go 1936 University of Washington HUSKY men's 8!!!!...er...um...a...I mean, AMERICA!

  • beautiful filming and great rowers!!!

  • lol @ cox with the shouter thing..

    Nontheless this is amazing..

  • this films shows to me how advance german filming was, the quality for a start, im sure it was filmed in colour, (but no technology then to show it) and the camera shots between 2:00 and 3:00 are brilliant, verging on artistic, you dont get them now at the relevised races

  • Incredible quality vid. The oars look tiny.

  • Awesome, these guys are realy crazzy

  • Awesome quality.

They are sliding, their strokes are just a lot smaller (the aren't using big blades like we do today)

  • The shells, the oars, and every piece of rigging are multiples of weight greater than todays shells. Makes for a shorter run.

Having rowed in a couple of 1960's era shells in my youth, switching to composite shells and oars was like trading in a model T for a jet fighter.

You haven't "lived" till you've pushed an old oar/shell combo into a stiff headwind for 2000 meters, with the pig under you 1/4 full of water.

    Good times, good times. :-P

  • Looks all body lean :P

  • looks like they barely sliding!! nice vid
