  • Interpreta con pasion,

    pasion music

  • Martha Argerich, Rindo tributo a tu belleza y a tu inigualable interpretación de uno de los grandes, bella tu sonrisa

  • she looks pretty sexy in B&W, and womans playing an instrument... woaaaa, they just kill me.

  • This is not Chopin. Oh, let's just bang it out like some lefty supporting slag. That's all this is about. Never liked this woman. She has no class whatsoever. You're playing CHOPIN lady, not soft rock!

  • During a radio broadcast many years ago the late pianist Julius Katchen referred to Marta Agerich, his friend as a kind of Sexy Angel. One wonders would she have been flattered by such a description. A truly magnificent pianist & a beautiful young woman as shown here.

  • How old was she??

  • I care more about that crazy morphing piano than Martha's playing. One minute it's a Bechstein and the next it's a Steinway. Mind boggling!

  • @MAGirlable hahahaa!! it's true! xD

  • This sounds sloppy and mistake filled. Much prefer Van Cliburn's rendition.

  • @RocketJohnnyful did you listen to the music or tried to find mistakes?

  • @progressivelife I grew up with a particular studio recording my mom had of Van Cliburn, so when I listened to a live version of Op. 53 from a different pianist, the errors seemed to jump out - they found me, I didn't have to find them. So maybe it's just unfair comparing a recording vs. live: who knows how many takes it took Cliburn to lay down his polished performance.

  • @RocketJohnnyful

    She's lazy. Probably a lefty.

  • FAP FA FA FAP FAP FAP FA FA FA FAP FAP FAP FA FA FA FA FAP FA FAP

  • at 3:44 such a beauitiful smile :) so beautiful and so talented!!!!

  • @jcaj89

    HAHA! Patronizing!

  • Oh Martha, that was perfect.

  • I am SPEECHLESS!

  • she sounds better than Rubenstein on this...or....maybe the poor old feller had a lousy sound man.

  • haha no comments on that but very well performed indeed

  • It's a shame that there is no take of the hands of the highly difficult and fast part of the octaves on the left hand! Anyway, a wonderful treasure. Thanks for sharing!

  • So Beautifullll So perfect Love Love......

  • At last a lady performing Polonaise. There's just a lil difference between men and women playing piano pieces. In other words the world of music is absolutely for women, too. Talent, concentration and love for one's profession are the secrets of success.

  • It's soooo.... like...... juicy!

  • everything about this performance is magical

    and 3:40-3:45.. indescribably beautiful

  • 0:31 Bechstein sign disapears.. Someone did an awesome cutting...

  • @ZhangZhongShi Someone turned off a light.

  • How did the Bechstein turn into a Steinway?? Just look.

  • Now I see why her smile has been compared to Mona Lisa, she's gorgeous.

  • She's amazing...

    ...and so pretty

  • 4:38 Sexy, desirable,attractive,beautiful,fascinate

    .

  • Una argentina genial, pero otra desagradecida a su país.

  • hehe it's the classical combination of gemini and pisces

  • Gra świetnie, próbuje stylu wielkiego Artura R.

  • This is the most popularised piece of piano frm Frederic Chopin; i heard it first

probably late sixties but not from M. Argerich, were you born at that time ? It's an old one performed here in the sixties too ! Thanks are not enough !

  • yes. she is one of the best pianist of the century.

  • That souns goooooooooood and sexy!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Bechstein + Steinway....lol...... great performance after all.........

  • If I am not mistaken, this performance is at the Chopinowski Competition in 1965 where she won the gold medal. She was 24 at the time and already a superb pianist. The polonaise is delivered with great confidence, passion and style. And yes, at 24 she was a very beautiful woman.

  • @liberalaccidental Well said. I think she deserves to be remembered as one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century.

  • What a babe! Seems like two performances spliced together. She's playing a Bechstein at the start, but then later, when viewed from above, you can read Steinway across the front of the piano. But who cares?

  • Beautiful and elegant!

  • She and Gina Bachauer own this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • emotionally charged beautiful music Chopins finest piece by far and the piano player is a very fine piece too...LOL

  • She's so beautiful/sexy/incredible, I can't get enough of this video. I must have watched it 20 or 30 times already.

  • Her smile is breathtaking... besides the way she plays, of course...

  • 5:32 I absolutely LOVE her smile!

  • ma kobieta jaja

  • THIS is music! Bravo!

  • Webarton, you're an imbecile!

  • @Webarton "tense...no class" :D

no need to dress you down after that silly comment of yours.

  • The sound IS bad, but because the RECORDING is bad, or at least, what YouTube made of it. But if you had any experience on this topic, you'd hear, what comes from the performance, and what from the recording. And then you'd hear clearly: This is a poor quality recording of a perfect and astonishing performance. 5*****

  • eccezionale

  • può dare molti punti ai maggiori pianisti uomini finalmente la musica è anche un dominio femminile

  • 5:31....I wonder why that smile on Argerich's face. We see it, Argerich, I like how you play, and I like you too by the way.

  • Cool, but watch Cziffra play this (those octaves!)

  • The part from 3:08 must be the scariest part of the piece (to play). *shivers*

  • wow. this video quality sucks, but the sound is like...crystal clear! That's sweet.

  • She's an angel, a master, a goddess, a divinity unto herself whose music carries the spirit to unimagined heights among the stars. When she purses her lips, it's one of the sexiest expressions I've ever seen on a woman's face.

  • i like how its black and white but not recorded during a black and white time period :P

  • OMG! i love her music and smile!

  • Sexy,

  • Proud to be Polish......

  • Who gives a shit if she didn't bow, anyway. She was only in her teens and was still a kid. She was also very beautiful and charming. Can't you just enjoy her music and her amazing talent? If you would watch some more of videos, especially her interviews, you would see what a genius she was and how sweet she was.

  • you don't have to better to criticize somebody (with respect).

  • I am always amazed by the critics! Can you play it better? if yes send us a video and we can compare!

  • OO! I hate the trills at 0:53 (and various other places) for the outer fingers. She does a good job but I can't get them going fast enough. I love this too!!

  • intense!

  • its full of mistakes

  • Beautiful music, beautiful pianist.

  • wow... love it

  • Oh well then, can YOOOUUUU play it better? Huh? Can you? CAN YOU?

  • best ever

  • Amaaaaazing

  • Nice polka dot dress.

  • felicidades

  • she looks so happy playing this piece. I really admire her. RESPECT! This is called music! Bravo !

  • she plays like a virtouso! i can consider her as one of the best ever pianist to interpret/play chopin's polonaise, next to arthur rubistein of course.

  • uhm... i would say that she played it diferrently. as an artist maybe she's entitled to her uniqueness of interpretation and style. star spangled banner can't be sung by a european the way a typical american does. anyways, music is a universal languge which clearly implies that anyone can sing any song that one wants. music breaks the language and racial barriers. Johannes Del Valle, Manila, the Philippines @_@?

  • oh my god man, i bet none of us here can play it so just enjoy

  • Nationalism is stupid

  • Exactly, I am better because of my Geography.

  • maxi937 is a fucking idiot.

  • she sure was (is) great, when she turns up.

  • bel vestito, belle scarpe, bei capelli, bel sorriso..XD martha è troppo brava...davvero...

  • Her octaves are the best!

  • really pretty and plays great

  • wow she is sexy

  • @callenishss sexy fingers hah

  • @callenishss ....was sexy

  • @callenishss wth..

  • no one can play the intro as crisp as she can. absolutely amazing.

  • exactly!

  • i get shivers each time i hear idil biret's recording, though this is great too.

  • Who is the genius who, during the descending E maj and E flat octaves chose to show her from behind or to focus on her face? They should have used the camera that the polonaise starts off with, from the left side.

  • Oh, that was me. Sorry, my bad. I just got dumped and was lonely.

  • thank god argerich misses a few notes now and then. I appreciate her even more now that i know that she's human.

  • BEAUTIFUL TIMBRE! Very polonaisish playing!

    Thanks Argerich! For being!

  • And by octaves I mean the descending octaves in the E major part

  • OMG...how can I play octaves that fast. I can't do it....and she obviously can without huge hands like Chopin's were....

Is there an exercise or technique that I can try?

  • chopin only did an 8th ^^

  • There's no exercice for octaves EXCEPT FOR the normal scales you practice. And playing them fast is not just a matter of practice, but technique. Without a certain bounce and good arm and wrist motion, you would just hurt yourself. Tell me if you're interested and I will explain to you how to practice octaves with proper technique. DO NOT try to imitate Argerich's tempo or hand formation. It's unique to her and it works JUST for her. Her technique is eccentric, which is how she produces her tone

  • yeah I like to go pretty fast just because its fun, and it doesn't hurt my forearm but i do feel the muscles working there...i wonder if thats i sign I'm too tense? I've tried using 1-5 on white keys and 1-4 on black as i descend..but i can pretty much do it at the same speed both ways. they are marked staccato but i want to play them a little smoother...

  • Well, two things:

Give up on making them smooth because they won't be. They have to be extremely sharp staccatos. It's like a march. It keeps the rhythm going. It's a stylistic matter.

The fingering depends on your hand size.

Make sure you practice them slowly with bounce. Hit an octave. Leave the keys. Bring your hand back to normal position in the air. Open up and hit the second octave. You're general hand direction must be towards the centre of the keyboard.

  • You have to feel your fingers bouncing. And you cannot do that without a sharp staccato. If you feel the bouncy momentum, you will be able to play it at any tempo you want. You have to get out of the keys rather than pressing into them. You know what i mean?

  • Lol, I'm gonna get hung for this, but I think this may have inspired the Man-hands episode of Seinfeld

  • the sound quality of the recording is not good enough to make firm comment on this.....

this playing could well sound 100% better if the recording was better.

  • This playing could well sound 100% better if it was..."playing'...As it is We listen to Pachmann who sound 10xs as good with 1/10th the sound.

  • Yea. And I guess the judges and critics were all stupid, eh? They should have all listened to Smithsherman the Great from YouTube.

  • I agree that De Pachmann was a very good pianist......except when he boasted about his

improving Chopin's compositions by re-writing them.He also descended to extreme tackiness

in the 1920-30's with his awful magazine

series on learning to play the piano by

    weekly installment!

  • Ha! Her mistake at 1:39 is startling but for some strange reason, hilarious! This could not be an error, it is a stroke of genius; kind of like comic relief. It was so damn entertaining that I listened to it 5 times with great pleasure. Thank you, Miss Argerich!

  • what? shut up

  • "Chopin Reinvented"...?!?!!....Just like Butter was...reinvented into margarine...

GREAT! What you list Gerard...is true...It's what you don't list...that is false...

  • This polonaise can be easily rendered with misleading playing. This is due mainly to the title "Heroic" given after Chopin's death. Chopin just indicated : maestoso. So we get often a bombastic piece played too fast and too loud as if it was indicated Allegro con brio or Allegro con fuoco.

Here, it is not the case!. The tempo is right , the dynamics varied from pp to ff and the sound gorgeous, powerful but never hard. A truly majestic account of this much abused piece. Chopin reinvented.

  • I agree, this polonaise sounds a bit empty, like it's missing that magic sound of Chopin. So many pianists nowdays concentrate so much on trying to get the technique right in this piece but forget about the musicality and sound. This really isn't Chopin.

  • What small hands! That is very brave to play this piece with hands like that. I enjoyed it very much. The recording is a bit choppy though.

  • chopin65-he also had very thick fingers. If he had the hands of a Horowitz or Rachmaninov-he would arguably have been the best. With this he was surely not blessed.

  • It sounded like she played this peice by ear and not by the notes.

  • She's a great technician of the keys, but as she insists on always playing at a faster octave, there are always many subtle nuances she outright skips. These details add so much to the piece's dimensions. I applaud her technical ability, but find others' interpretations more refreshing.

An example is her Rach 3 interpretation.

  • Greetings,

    What a bright intro.

Her overall playing sounds very much like Nikita Magaloff's interpretation, specially the lyrism she holds with the right hand. Certainly there are a few little mistakes, but a brilliant playing anyway.

I see no connections between her facials and the music, but something I see is that she was, at least by the time of the recording, BEAUTIFUL.

  • i like the facial expressions corresponding to the music.

  • If you haven't heard the great pianists at truecrypt's Youtube site play Chopin,You'll love this.

  • @smithsherman yawn... go bore the judging committee instead. That is, the ones that arn't dead (I imagine they would soon come to envy those that are)

  • yea, there are a few mistakes here and there but the way the interpreted is... it's awesome. she has fire in this piece which illustrates a true hero. i think this is one of the best version i've heard so far.

  • I oso wanna play like this!!

    Bwaahhhh !!

  • no other performer gets the beginning so crisp. se has great pulse, doesn't fiddle with the work too much, convincing performance I must say. great pianism, even thogh a few mistakes cripped in, still who doesn't make them live? she was hot in those days.haha:)

  • She is one of the greatest! Amazing! She was also very beautiful.

  • it's the octaves that start at 3:08 that remind me i still have a long way to come as a pianist...

  • she is the greatest pianist from 1965 to now, no one can approach her in any technical skill

  • Valentina Lisitsa can...

  • @NRob84 - To me Horowitz plays this piece too fast.

  • What is she mouthing while playing?

  • I mouth while I play too, but only when I am really really enjoying myself. Sort of like the reflex in singing in the shower... it helps me keep in tempo, especailly during those long pauses.

  • I agree that one's opinions' on a performance's greatness can vary from a person to person, but it is of one's great ignorance to declare that a fabulous, clean performance like this is a recitation of notes without context, meaning, or "traditional historicity."

  • you are an idiot

  • I would love to hear Lang Lang do thiswork. could u post? and I did hear Horowitz, a few versions but I always seem to get the messed up ones, where he didn't practice...lol...but yea, please post Lang Lang or tell me where can I listen this work with him.

  • wow!!! :D

  • lots of mistakes, but still better than what i can do with this piece

  • Martha knows how to play Chopin, and she play (of course) that piece perfectly and with the right tempo... great video...

  • We are not fooled. You do not get her.

  • The best performance still is the one by Rubinstein. This piece is not only piano technique, it requires a lot of musicality from the pianist. Nevertheless Argerich is a great pianist, no dubt

  • Outstanding.

  • i love ur playing it's awesome!

  • how did she make so rapid staccato?

  • Carpal tunnel afterwards, probably.

  • er why?

  • er why?

  • I fell in love with this interpretation, too bad for the uncertainty at the end of the scale at 1:39

  • Scale 1 to 5....

    Pianistic Technique 4.8/4.8

    Musicality 2.5/2.5

    Rhetorical Execution 3.6/2.5

    Total Execution 2/1

    Pedagogy 2/1

    Total Average 2.6

    Curved for youth 3.6

  • She´s just great. No words...

  • Absolutely stunning and flawless! I'm amazed at the quality of the sound of the video. I hope to be able to play like that one day. Maybe in a couple of years!

  • 太棒了~~真的不知道要如何形容這樣美的琴聲

  • yes I agree LOOL

  • for me the best interpretation on this piece.

  • This is much much better than Rafael Blechaz's performance, who is the polnish winner of chopin competition in poland

  • technique-5/5

    musicality-4.8/5

    execution-4.9/5

    pedagogic work-5/5

beautiful playing! simply wonderful! though she needs to slow down just a bit(a lot less then most other pianists) it is one of the best interpretations (if not the best) i've ever heard! bravo!

  • (sorry for my english)I think rubinstein´s interpretation is what chopin would had like to listen to. But she played the best version of ravel´s jeux d'eau, check it out.

  • Ti amo!

  • perfect that is!

  • It seems that Martha does not have a good contact with the audience, although the playing was great, 5 stars.

  • wow....nicee 5/5

  • Oh my God!
