I won't detail the story since you can find out what happened by yourself. The number of casualties varies from 7000 to 40000. The Western media didn't speak of it much. There was no global outrage. No one is defending the brutal dictatorship of the Assad regime; Syria doesn't receive billions of US aid dollars and state of the art weapons; Syria doesn't have lucrative trade agreements with the EU; Syria doesn't have legions of supporters in the west.
Besides all this, there is good reason to believe without the constant threat from Israel and the US Syria would have been a democracy by now.

@Scarved Maybe I should recall the war against Lebanon of 1982 when Israel killed some 30,000 people, the majority of which were defenseless civilians. Because Israel claims to be a democracy people hold it to the same high standards as they hold other western democracies.

2) The number of 30000 dead is quite exaggerated. 18000 is a more accurate number (at least 10000 of which were syrian soldiers and PLO fighters). It's such shame Arafat survived.

As result of the US-lead invasion of Iraq tens of thousands of innocent people got killed. Today it is estimated the war and occupation have slain some 1.3 million Iraqi's, most of which were killed by NATO-forces. (Only a relatively small portion died at hands of the resistance.)
So as I said, deeds speak louder than words. And always read the context.

To say that you were raised on hate and you are trying to be open minded is honourable. I can't imagine what it must be like for you to live in that environment.
