  • I've heard this studio version a couple times, but I never really noticed how it's different than the live version. If I remember correctly on the live version Jeff says its not finished, so its cool to hear it this way.

Does anyone know if this was recorded recently or back in the 90's?

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • *click repeat* DEE DEE DEEE DEE DEE DEE...

  • i want to get that picture tattooed....

  • this song is so fucked i love it

  • That was absolutely gorgeous.

  • i want a tattoo of those birds.

  • Last night in Athens, Jeff said this was the last song he wrote before he fell into "a black hole of really crazy shit."

  • @DairyKing21 I was there Friday and Saturday! Found that very interesting, personally. What great shows. This song is so haunting it's hard to believe.

  • 1/27/12 Washington D.C. Lincoln Theatre, "This is the song that fucked me up." - Jeff Mangum

    Me too, Jeff. Me too.

  • I saw Jeff in Minneapolis and he said he had a hard time with this song.

  • He played this Saturday night in Minneapolis. It's haunted me for two whole days. He sounds better live too, which was something I didn't expect.

  • SHIT YES

  • Wonder what the first song that fucked him up was.

  • He played this 1/27 in DC and, if I heard him correctly, introduced it by saying "This is the song that f-ed me up"

  • @stittdude Yeah, he said something like "this is the second song that fucked me up". Along those lines, at least. Incredibly cryptic, but he wasn't as cryptic as I expected him to be.

  • saw jeff tonight in dc, he played this song..... i'm still speechless

  • ME TOO!

  • saw him play twice at BAM in brooklyn this weekend - he played this on saturday and i cried my eyes out.

  • @melkicia Yes I saw Jeff at BAM too. He played this during his Thursday set as well. He is so amazing live. I got chills during "Oh Comely."

  • @melkicia I was there too and it a huge shock he played this and i couldn't believe i was actually there.

  • So happy he played this last night at the Shubert

  • @BabySnakesMusic Such an amazing show

  • @NotoriusPUP Totally. I had never even heard of this guy but my friend wanted someone to go to the concert with, and fortunately, I was free Wednesday.

  • Played it last night in New Haven. Amazing.

  • Conor Oberst reminds me a lot of Jeff Magnum.

  • @16mockingbirds WHAT THE FUCK

  • who the hell disliked this video?? amazing song..amazing Jeff!!

  • This is such a sad and emotional song it's so beautiful

  • I can't believe there's finally a studio version of this. Probably my favorite song by Jeff.

  • The Bob Marley song wold be three little birds....amazing to hear this as a studio version

  • I LOVE THE WAY YOU GO DEEDEEEDEE MOTHER FUCKER KILL ME!

  • I have been alive now for 50 years and have heard a lot of music, this is truly a gem that I will cherish forever, I just wish there were a little more of this music available today. Most music today, and I use the term "music" loosely, just has no soul like this does.

  • This is honestly the best song I have ever heard.

So this is what Jeff has been doing for 13 years?! Releasing a NMH vinyl boxset and announcing some solo shows world-wide! Best songwriter of our times, hands down.

  • @ausmariner1 No.

  • i think he doesnt like to play this song to often b/c he feels it offends some people and is a bit to "deep" for some he used to be very self concious about his work

  • this is jeffs song not yours so if you have oppinions its fine to voice them but dont belittle this beautiful work of art for being anyway different than it has been experienced in the past.

  • @AlphaNerd3 i know :)

i don't listen to it often, can't go through it w/out getting all choked up

  • one of my fave songs, otherworldy

  • Is this an Angry Birds cover?

  • um. omg. this is great.

  • I never thought I'd say this, but the old live version actually sounds quite a bit better. The vocals aren't as strong, but the old live version sounded quite a bit more unhinged and unsettling.

  • @Saraphiel i'm sure future live versions will be as awesome as that old one :) but yeah i agree the old recording sounds positively uncanny

  • Life Meaning +3

  • i had no idea this version existed. you guys can't imagine how excited i am to find this. i don't say this a lot. well, i never say this. BUT THANK YOU FOR UPLOADING.

  • Yes! Waiting for this for ages

  • Fuck that one guy.

  • Brb Freaking the fuck out.

  • @littlebenevolent agreed, there's something darker and more urgent on the live version...

  • Holy shit. This exists now. I am so floored by this idea. There goes any sleep I was going to get tonight.

  • I have so many chills right now

  • Oh god. I just stumbled on this inadvertantly when looking for Oh Sister. Can't believe he did studio versions of so many songs only available as bootlegs previously. Life: fulfilled.

  • So is there a listen of songs that were streaming? Or the ones that have been pulled from streaming?

  • live version is so much better

  • Holy wow.

I was there for it! Nobody could ever ask for a better show. If you were there, you know how it felt. There was such a communal thing happening. I've never felt so at one with a group of people in my life. I guess he just has that effect on people.

    Thanks, Jeff. You're Brilliant.

  • @mussman717word Agreed, his shows are defnitely something special.

  • @mussman717word I loved how everyone sang with him and it was just peaceful there.
