Cool, imagine how many old home movies like this there must be, all over the world. Many of our old highways and roadside attractions of yesteryear are gone, and even in a span of just 50 years cityscapes and even our national parks can be dramatically different visually. I hope as time allows you will post more of your grandparents home movies if they exist so that they too may be enjoyed by others.
Thanks! Adding music to it might be do-able. YouTube's collection isn't very good but maybe I can find something good. I wonder what my grandparents would have liked. This Land Is Your Land is a good choice.
lol, sore loser... why are you bringing up old stuff anyway? You are why 12 year olds need to be monitored on the internet. Stop spreading your pathetic hate-monger rhetoric. I hope you study hard in school and do well so you can look back at this and see what a pathetic crybaby lazy-ass jerk you are.

5:00 min = Lake Louise with Mt Victoria and Victoria Glacier at the far end.
5:17 is Peyto Lake from the observation viewpoint on Mt Jimmy Simpson. (Peyto and Simpson were both fur trappers who lived there during the pioneer days before it became a park.)
5:29 = Peyto Glacier at the head of the lake. It has pulled back about 50% since 1955.
5:35 = probably the Columbia Icefield in Jasper National Park, just up Highway 93 from Peyto Lake.
Ok follow-up on the date of the film: That film is definately 100% 1955. I found out construction of the Fremont Hotel and Casino began in 1955 and it opened in 1956.
One question I still have: How did you recognize the scene? What building/s was/were it and how can I identify them in the movie?
I know if I had spent a lot of time in any place, seeing a pic of it at the time I was there or just knowing about it would probably trigger the recognition without there being a specific building required for that recognition to take place. What was it about this footage that made you recognize it?
00:40 - 00:52 in the film. That's Fremont Street. To the far left in the back you can see the Golden Nugget sign above the traffic light. That's the south corner of 2nd and Fremont St. Across the way on the north corner is the Fremont Hotel & Casino. Next to the Fremont use to be the Femont Movie Theater. You can see that to the left of the construction. The footage was shot standing on the south corner of 3rd and Fremont St.
I know of a person who grew up there in the 50s that can verify everything. Downtown Fremont Street use to be the big place to shop. Not just gambling. Where the Coke-a-Cola sign is was the White Cross Drug Store. That's now the spot of the 4 Queens Casino. The Fremont Movie Theater next to it (see the movie marquee) is where the movie Ocean's 11 premiered. The Golden Nuggett sign to the left is now stored in the YESCO neon bone yard.
Wow, thanks. You have better eyes than I do. Even in full screen mode I can't make out that that is the Golden Nugget sign. I do see it as a sort of oblong sign but wouldn't recognize it as the famous Golden Nugget sign, which I have seen in other pictures. I do see the Coca Cola sign though...
Golden Nugget sign is the highest sign to the left of the traffic light, not the skinny signs to the right of it. The long skinny signs off to the center and to the right in the back are either the Boulder Club or the Vegas Club sign. I'll have to look that one up. But the movie theater next to the construction and the building to the right of the theater are a dead give away because they can always be seen in any 50s or 60s post card of that location of Fremont Street.
WOW! I can definately narrow the date down for you. It's anywhere between 1954 & 1956 by looking at the Fremont St. film footage. The construction you see across from Golden Nugget is the Fremont Hotel which opened in 1956. Once opened it would be Nevada's tallest building standing at 14 stories tall.
I think you are right. (I tried posting this earlier but haven't seen it up yet.) I've changed the title. I'd to know about any of the other unknown scenes in there: the mountains - is that Glacier National Park and/or the Canadian Rockies? Where is that town after Hoover Dam?...
Very cool! Thanks for posting! BTW what were they driving on this trip?

Eat Shit Asshole!
This Land is NOT your land.
it is STOLEN by MURDER and GENOCIDE, PLUNDER etc. etc.
it is ALL the LAND of **NATIVE** People.
White PEOPLE are CRIMINALS INVADERS and the only real ILLEGAL ALIENS here.

Very cool footage -- definitely 1950's. Someone who knows cars could get that date more accurately.
oh2sail 4 years ago
Clothing and cars look more like 1950's. Could that be possible?
