absolutely! russia is definitely acting on behalf of international law! on august 7th at 2200 moscow time (2pm ny time) when georgia started bombing tshinvali russia called in emergency UN security council meeting to tell georgia to stop aggression. US and its whore UK blocked that resolution so russia had to go in and crush georgia's military. protection of russian peacekeepers in SO and A was included in UN resolution that gave russia a mandate for being in those regions.

no dummy, international law states that a country (US/UK) does not have the right to invade sovereign country (iraq) if that country has not attacked them first and steal its natural resources. iraq never attacked US/UK. it also states that a country (US/UK) cannot unilaterally declare a territory independent (kosovo) without UN approval. there was NO UN approval.
russian peacekeepers acted in accordance with their UN mandate...which in WITHIN international law parameters.

To add clarity to my earlier statement, where is it stated in your UN Mandate as peacekeepers ( I do not argue about rights for protecting one's peacekeepers ), that the areas being "protected" by peacekeepers can be declared as independent, as a result of peacekeepers being killed.

If this is a debate, then I need facts. As you stated - no military bases to attack in S. Ossetia, so I need to know that S. Ossetian Militia were not in the city and instigating the issue. Ossetian militias went at it over disputed territory, I have not seen any proof offered up that Georgian forces did anything more than attack S. Ossetian militia. Civilians ( both S. By all the chronological events, Russia attacked Georgia in RETALIATION for Georgian bombing of Tshinvali, in which they bombed Russian Peacekeeping post to bits. On this week's (8/31/08) "McLaughlin Group" Pat Buchanan (of all people!) spoke about the conflict in Georgia. VERY INTERESTING! I urge everyone to read the transcript on their site. Buchanan is NOT with Bush on US meddling into Russia's business.
There's is more to this than what we read in the mainstream press, that's for sure. But of course, Putin is as much of a sociopath as Bush, Cheney and McCain.
I'd like proof about who's responsible, but that may be impossible under the circumstances.
