Impressive cover. 1 Question, all this song is in 5/4? or the part from 2:22 to 2:44 is in other signature?? (ive counted 3/4 +4/4, but totally confused haha)
Just wanted to add my praise - awesome drumming! The mix sounds great too. I've read through a lot of the comments, but haven't seen anything about mics, interface, or mixing. Any chance you have gone through this on a forum?
sound awsome man, wats the name of your kit? and how do u tune your drums to sound deep like that? I can only tune my drums and they sound high and poppy
I watched your Schism cover and it looks like you changed the heads on your toms and I was wondering about that because Im replacing all the heads on my drum kit and wanted to know what you might recommend.
@matter311 I've never taken lessons (I know I should) and I 'feel' as well...I've been told by many people they count while playing and I just don't understand how anybody could do that. Thanks for responding.
@nedak I've never had a lesson in my 15 years of drumming, I have ALWAYS learned by ear. And although I do regret it sometimes, I wouldn't be the drummer I am today. So as of the last year or so, I have been getting into rudiments and practice pads and such. Figuring now I know how to play the basics...but now I can learn WHY and HOW.
@matter311 That's awesome bro, shows your really wanting to get understanding of it and improve. As a guitarist of about 12 years, I'm going back and doing something similar as well.
@nedak That's really interesting to hear. I usually hear the opposite from everybody. I actually contacted Danny Carey and asked him the same question and got some cool feedback from him. I still want to get drum lessons but it's cool hearing that people are actually able to play the drums properly with feeling without any lessons.
@matter311 Wow thats really talented. I was wondering if there was any way you could please send me the file? Iv searched everywhere for backing tracks, and all i can find is schism and the pot..typical. I really need it for my major work at school, thank you
@TheHumphreybumphrey Not to take anything away from Tbartels because he did a respectable job, but Matter311 was far above and beyond his cover. There are at least four takes spliced together in Tbartels cover, whereas this one was clearly just one take. Matter311 also captured many more nuances of Carey. By far the best drum cover of this song on YouTube.
i'm going to be that great at a kit in 1000 years or so lol i would love to play tool songs i can do pantera stuff and alice in chains asll so nirvana how you get so good man? i know practice but what type of practice
If anyone needs a good reason why my brother doesn't get violent with the drums bashing them hard, etc., ask him how many times he has to replace cracked cymbals or busted heads in a given year. Or in his drumming history overall.
@matter311 Yeah man, you have insane amounts of talent, I'm not saying that, but I just feel like theres no energy, I know it's cake to play most things for a seasoned drummer, I'm just use to feeling the energy of a drummer as they smash through a great song. No offense, I hope you didn't take any.
@vanhalenshredder it's not about the way a musician looks, it's about how and what they play. you shouldn't have to watch someone to see that they have soul, you can hear it in their music. plus this is youtube, did u only watch this video to see him move around like a crazy metal rocker?,.. u don't have to answer that, i'm only sayin.
@kierkwingen For me it's like this, you go to a show, the songs are great, you look up and everyone on stage is sitting in chairs, no energy, that's cool if you're on acid, but for me, if I go to a show, I want to get pumped! I just like seeing energy emanate off of someone and realize that that means something to them, you can sit there and play a song 100 times, but when playing it for the reason it was written or learned, I just expected to see a little more intensity.
@vanhalenshredder yah, I agree with what you are saying, that makes sense now that ive reevaluated my thoughts. I was just saying if you listen to tool and close ur eyes, u can hear the intensity in the music, u don't have to watch them to See it. however this is a video and we can see him playing, and ur right! their isn't much intensity, but still I think if he wasn't so focused on the technical part of the drumming, he could feel it and then really express himself. We jus shdnt focus on it.
@vanhalenshredder moving around is nothing without chops. Good solid posture is important to work on before worrying about headbanging and moving around a bunch. You need to develop a solid base first.
@almightymarshmellow Jesus, why does everyone think I'm talking about headbanging. Look at drummers like Cobus, entertaining, tricks, amazing drummer. That's all, I don't want headbanging, stop assuming I said something that I never did.
@vanhalenshredder tricks?? Tricks are even more pointless. Our proff would really kick our asses if we busted out stick tricks in class. What the heck else do you mean by "entertaining?" Do you want him to juggle?
@matter311 im learning this song atm ready to coved with my band any tips you could share? also seriously how long did it take you to get it this dialed in?

It sounds as if it's ringing from feedback although feedback doesn't exist in the recording. A few suggestions for the mix. Snare and bass levels are near perfect in contrast to eachother and sound great.
I am a huge fan of yours...love your effortlessness when you play. At any rate, I've been drumming for a while, and back in the early 90's was the drummer for a metal band from New Mexico. So, we recorded an instrumental record. We didn;t have the money to record live drums, so took my drum parts and programmed them into a Roland R-5. Was curious if I could send you and get your feedback on what I did...do you have an email I could send it to?
A lot of people have wondered why this guy isn't rocking out, bangin his head with his shirt off looking like drumming is the biggest effort of his fucking life...he just chills the fuck out and plays the parts right. To me it's refreshing, to even have the balls to post an attempt at covering danny carey demands respect but in my opinion, matter does the best job I've ever seen....kudos and keep up the good work.
@mrpicky510 while i totally agree with this, i dont like the fact hes not rocking out simply for the eye candy. i love it when a drummer goes crazy. but non the less, great cover and well done.
@mrpicky510 It makes me a little hesitant when someone forces a headbang when playing a cover. I agree with you, as long as they play it correctly, kudos to them.
he looks like a young version of that guy on the show "the office" the fat one. its funny because i just watched an episode where he was playing the drums. hahaha

The tom levels need to come up in the mix just a hair. Also, in the syncopated part at 3:30 sounds good, but you need to EQ out some weird yet very subtle high frequency stuff going on. It sounds as if it's ringing from feedback although feedback doesn't exist in the recording. A few suggestions for the mix. Snare and bass levels are near perfect in contrast to eachother and sound great.
Excellent playing and Paragons FTW!
