How does he know that history would have been the same for Africa without the slave trade? A large part of the reason that the Europeans took over most of Africa is because the slave trade weakened the continent. With so many able bodied men sent away, and with the increased warfare between slave trading kingdoms all made Africa vulnerable to colonization. Who knows what history would have been? Maybe the same, but you shouldn't assume Africa would have turned out like this no matter what.

Do you think it would have been better for Africans if America had been slave-free, and that no slaves were brought here? Look at conditions in Rwanda, Ethiopia and Sudan among other African nations.
If you had a choice to live in slavery 200 years ago and have your descendants free in America today, or be free back then and have them living (or more likely dying) in today's Sudan, which would you choose?

How does he know that history would have been the same for Africa without the slave trade? A large part of the reason that the Europeans took over most of Africa is because the slave trade weakened the continent. With so many able bodied men sent away, and with the increased warfare between slave trading kingdoms all made Africa vulnerable to colonization. Who knows what history would have been? Maybe the same, but you shouldn't assume Africa would have turned out like this no matter what.

I spent two years in Kenya where I met my husband, a black African. Sure, like most kids in third-world countries, given a chance, an African child will excel more than many American kids. Why? Because American kids have it easy, even when they are living below the poverty level. They have enough to eat & tv too, whereas, as you know, most poorer Africans are tittering between life & death, ALL the time. Given an opportunity, poor Africans do excel, like Cambodian refugees did in the 70s, here.
