I think that is an over simplification of what punk music is about. It is also a composition and production Style.

Green Day even have noted that this album, and the previous one (AI) are less punk then their previous albums. BJA has mentioned that this is a heavily POP Influenced album

Pop isn't necessarily Brittney Spears and Madonna, it is short for "Popular music." Rock bands like U2 and 3 doors down would fall into this category.

This is a very pop album, but that doesn't make it bad.
