Hey no matter how I try, I can't figure the rhythm of the strumming pattern if it is not explained in the video :x I try to down down up down down up but it never sounds ok and it's just not the right rhythm. Is there some kind of technique to do that, or am I just a terrible player ? if so, would it be possible to explain it, even in written form would be fine I think ^^
We sang this at Camp Minikani about (cough cough cough) years ago... I remember boisterous versions in the dining hall. A GREAT favorite of all campers. At the (sea) part, we sang "Fishies and turtles and the ladies lost their girdles..." Thanks for a great memory. :)
i love your videos and they help a lot buuuut i really stink at strumming. i play the sax and the upright bass and sometimes percussion so i thought i'd be able to keep the beat but it seems as if my brain just can't compute strumming :(
thank you, Thank you, THANK YOU!!! I LOVE this song, I used to sing it as a girl scout around the campfire (sounds like the same way as Faerunner).
And just to top off the fun at the very end we would say "Kerplunk it SUNK".
I can't tell you how much I've learned from your videos. You've inspired me to get over a big hump and really learn to play the guitar (I borrow your strumming/chords).

@artsygala I guess I didn't know this song would engender so much controversy. . . Good thing I didn't do Gordon LIghtfoot's "Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald"

Great song, Mike! Truly the song of a sad story. but the lesson learned is an uptempo one! Be thankful for each and everyday, cuz you never know which'll be your last!
If I die surfing in Typhoon surf, I hope someone writes a nice tune about how I paddled into the biggest ride of my life, and went out with a bang!
I love this song! We used to sing it in two parts (It was sad... (so sad!), oh it was sad.. (so sad!).... it was sad when the great ship went down to the bottom of the seeeeeeeeaa (husbands and wives, little children lost their lives)... However, through years of girl scout camp and some censoring we lost a verse.
And yes, the song -is- about a terrible disaster, and at camp we made jokes about the fact that many of our songs dealt with death. It doesn't make them any less fun to sing or play.
I think it's a great song. I think those who wrote negatively would be glad they didn't grow up learning the folk songs that were so popular. and still remain popular, back in the 50's.. and even before. Many were songs by slaves.. not good either.. but there was a story to tell.. and many had a good beat.. or they would never have remained popular "camp" songs. They would have been spoken poetry.
I have watched many of your lessons and think you have a fabulous channel which I recommend to anyone I meet who is interested in learning the uke. I learned to play "Crazy G" from watching your lessons. Your students are lucky to have you as a teacher.
Yes, musical taste is subjective. I hope in the future no-one writes a bouncy camp song about the World Trade Center attack. I'll pass on that one, too, even if it is easy to play.
@artsygala I'm sorry you think that a song has to be in minor chords to be about something sad. Maybe the point was to teach this song, not another more well known one.
I seriously am in love with you i think my babies will all have your mustache when they get older, amen to great style pimpdaddy

Now, I like Lightfoot's "Edmund Fitzgerald" very much. The lyrics are great, It had the right tempo and was respectful of the subject.
I would very much like you to do a lesson on that song!
